About the Author
Joan L. Herman is Director of the National Center for Research on Evaluation, Standards, and Student Testing (CRESST) at UCLA. Her research has explored the effects of accountability and assessment on schools and teachers and the design of assessment systems to support school planning and instructional improvement. Her recent work has focused on the quality and consequences of teachers' formative assessment practices. She also has wide experience as an evaluator of school reform.

Dr. Herman is noted in bridging research, and practice, particularly in applications serving English Language Learners and at-risk students. Among her books are Tracking Your School's Success: A Guide to Sensible School-Based Evaluation; and A Practical Guide to Alternative Assessment, both of which have been popular resources for schools across the country. A former teacher and school board member, Dr. Herman is an elected AERA fellow, has published extensively in research journals and is a frequent advisor to prominent national and state research and development initiatives, including repeated service to the National Academy. She is past president of the California Educational Research Association; has held a variety of leadership positions in the American Educational Research Association, National Organization of Research Centers, and Knowledge Alliance; chairs the Para Los Ni�os school board, and is current editor of the research journal, Educational Assessment.

Carol Fitz-Gibbon initiated the A-Level Information System in 1983 and was Director of the Curriculum, Evaluation and Management Centre from 1989-2003 and Professor of Education at Durham from 1996-2003. She has a continuing interest in cross-age tutoring and Reforms as Experiments in an active retirement.

Very helpful handbook and series, and two recommendations

I like this handbook, A LOT! Program evaluation is a popular activity, but requires specialized knowledge and skills to do it well. This handbook is Volume 1 of a nine volume series on program evaluation, and gets you off to a great start in understanding the overall framework of evaluation, how to be an effective evaluator, and details of conducting a formative and summative evaluation, using numerous examples, forms, and illustrations. The Evaluator's Handbook has been written and illustrated in a highly accessible manner, so that persons who are considering or who are at the beginning stages of program evaluation can establish solid foundational knowledge and skills. Based on my reading of Volume 1, I have two recommendations. The first is that one or more of the other volumes should be purchased to establish knowledge and skills in those areas of program evaluation in which you need detailed guidance and that are relevant to your current project. The second is for faculty in university and college settings who would like to engage in particular program evaluation projects and are seeking grant monies to fund these projects. Cynthia Carr's "The Nuts & Bolts of Grant Writing" is an outstanding book for faculty, as program evaluation can be costly and Carr's book provides detailed and comprehensive guidance on how to successfully secure funding from different sources. Knowledge, skills, and resources are what make effective program evaluation happen!

Chlo� Taylor is an assistant professor of philosophy at the University of Alberta. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Toronto and a postdoctoral fellowship from McGill University. Written in a highly accessible way, i found this book a pleasure to read. Taylor very clearly and concisely covered a lot of history and theory in her book, which was great, because it then made it easy to take those ideas and find contemporary manifestations of confessional culture that might exist in one's life. I would definitely recommend this book, especially if you enjoy Foucault, feminism, identity politics, or are interested in the practice of confession from antiquity to modernity.

About the Author

After completing her undergraduate training at Nottingham University Medical School, Julia Smedley subsequently spent several years in hospital medical specialties before embarking on higher specialist training in occupational medicine (a joint clinical/academic post at Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust and the Medical Research Council Environmental Epidemiology Unit, University of Southampton). She is currently the head of a large NHS occupational health department that also provides services to a range of local and global industries. Whilst she is primarily a practical clinician and service director, she has always maintained a strong interest in research and evidence-based practice in occupational medicine.


Finlay Dick is a Senior Lecturer in Occupational Medicine at Aberdeen University, Honorary Consultant Occupational Physician to NHS Grampian and is the course co-ordinator for the MSc in Occupational Medicine at the University of Aberdeen. He has worked in occupational medicine for 15 years in a number of sectors including the oil industry, shipping, local authority, and healthcare sectors.


Steve Sadhra has published over 50 book chapters, international reports and peer-reviewed publications in the field of Occupational Health. He has over 15 years experience in teaching occupational physicians, nurses and occupational hygienists and engineers and currently undertakes National and International Consultancy work in occupational health for over 30 organisations throughout the UK.

This book is for not only travelers but also no travelers. The author provides one with how to look at the world, and more importantly, ourselves. For those who are experienced or new to traveling, the book contains plenty of valuable resources. Would I recommend the book? Yes, and have already done so. A few of my friends have purchased it.

About the Author
James A Fitzsimmons received a B.S.E. in industrial engineering from the University of Michigan, an MBA from Western Michigan University, and a Ph.D. with distinction from the University of California at Los Angeles. His research in the area of emergency ambulance location won the Stan Hardy Award in 1983 for the best paper published in the field of operations management. A computer program, referred to as CALL, has been used by major cities worldwide to plan emergency ambulance systems. Consulting assignments include the RAND Corporation; the U.S. Air Force; the cities of Los Angeles, Denver, Austin, Melbourne, and Auckland; the Texas comptroller; General Motors; La Quinta Motor Inns; Greyhound; TRICON Restaurants International; and McDonald's. Teaching experience includes faculty appointments at the University of California at Los Angeles, California State University at Northridge, the University of New Mexico, Boston University Overseas Graduate Program, California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo, and the Helsinki School of Economics and Business. He is a registered professional engineer in the state of Michigan and has held industrial engineering positions at Corning Glass Works and Hughes Aircraft Company. He served in the U.S. Air Force as an officer in charge of base construction projects. Mona Fitzsimmons A graduate of the University of Michigan, received her undergraduate degree in journalism with major supporting work in chemistry and psychology. Her graduate work was in geology and she has taught in public and private schools and at the university level. She has done writing and editing for the Encyclopaedia Britannica Education Corporation and for various professional journals and organizations. With James Fitzsimmons she edited New Service Development: Creating Memorable Experiences published in 2000 by Sage Publications. Her nonprofessional activities have included volunteer work for the Red Cross aquatics program and in wildlife rehabilitation. About the Author
John Hollitz received his Ph.D from the University of Wisconsin in 1981 and has been professor of history at the Community College of Southern Nevada since 1992. Dr. Hollitz is a dedicated teacher of the U.S. History survey course.
