Another great reference from Amy Gillett

The daily conversation examples are so common that you can easily find yourself in one of these situations and use the knowledge you recently gained from reading this book! If you're new to the USA, use this book as your daily dictionary. If you're a seasoned ESL speaker, then I urge you to challenge yourself, because you are likely to find more than a few examples in which you will catch yourself saying "oh, I didn't know that". It's a fun read, I highly recommend it.

I really love this book

Speaking a language without using idioms and expressions is neither expressive nor full in meaning. Amy does a great job writing this book because it teaches us the idioms we need for daily life situations. Each lesson presents good stories and the associated idioms and expressions that go with them. Language lens is a grammar refresher and expression practice followed by quizzes all do a good job to practice what we learned. The audio CD that comes with the book helps the reader with the pronunciation and it can be played over and over again at reader's convenience.

Does it really matter how you Start?

This is an exciting book that young and old, Black and White, executive and mailroom, or Blue collar and white collar workers can truly enjoy. It's great for a visual age like ours as it's full of page after page of lovely pictures and easily written so that it's user friendly and bursting with intrigue for all ages.

"The Race" kind of grows on you as you read it again and again. It's a great night time story for adults and children. Or find yourself reading it as an eye opener at a Boardroom meeting with executives.

It get's to the heart of these questions.

Does it really matter how you start?

Dee Groberg & Mac Anderson deserve a lot of credit for putting together this most informative book. It deals with a story all of us can relate to about being involved in a Race. You can learn some very important lessons from this book full of paradox and awesome ambiguity. Adults loved it and I've personally read it to over 55 children I mentor who all throught it was the bomb! You'll find it very thought provoking and worthy of giving to countless friends as a gift...it's cheaper than a McDonald's or Starbucks gift card with a longer shelf life less calories and no aftertaste. But please don't believe a word I'm saying get it and read it for yourself! I liked it so I'm giving it away.

I had ordered two books earlier and loved them. I wanted to order more for my family that are having some struggles or are in leadership positions at their jobs and at the church we go to. I recommend the books to all. When you have fallen at sometime in your life, this book will help to lift you up.
I ordered five from one source, and four from another source on Amazon. I received the five, but didn't get the four. I have emailed them to get the other four. I haven't heard from them. I have already been charged on my credit card for both orders. I am waiting for a response. After a week, I have heard nothing.

Nice book, someone is definitely getting kicked...maybe White, maybe Black.

As far as I can tell at my advanced beginner level, the book delivers on it's basic promise - it is not just a database dump, or crazy sidelines that might catch someone out.

When I first started playing tournaments I noticed that there were often book sellers with little opening pamphlets like this book. These were mostly junk you bought because you just lost in that line that round! What Annoni offers here is actually quite nice. Unlike many of the early opening monographs, this one promises no gimmicks and to give Black a chance to play real chess with the QGA.

I think I would have given this book five-stars, if it weren't for some questionable evaluations compared to computers, databases and other deeper opening books.

I compared the line given for Black against the sharp 1.d4 d5 2.c4 cxd4 3.e4 which Annoni covers in Chapter 6 called "The central duo 3.e4". Indeed, this is the line recommended in GM Schandorff's Playing 1.d4: The Queen's Gambit (Grandmaster Guide). The problem I see with Annoni's recommendations in this chapter is that after 3...Nf6 4.e5 Nd5 5.Bxc4 Nb6 6.Bd3 Nc6 7.Be3 Be6 8.Nc3 Qd7 (quite correctly given as a good line), the move for White which Annoni gives 9.Ne4 has not been played at the master level between 2010 and 2013 (so far). While the move 9.Nf3, which looks quite natural, has been played 9 times all but one of which White won (even a ~2400 beat a ~2600), and there was one draw. Annoni says that after his line (which includes the unplayed 9.Ne4) that Black has equalized. I'm not sure about this and neither is HIARCS 14 after 24 plys. Still, I like this book, and Annoni's humor and love of the game come through nicely. It's worth taking a look and really made me think. Following the advice here (with a little homework in your own databases and engines) will definitely get you in a fight - which is really what you want, right?

I got this devotional because I wanted something substantial to really dig into. Although the daily readings are not as long as I would like, Stanley has done a wonderful job with this book. I have learned a lot doing my daily devotional and can't wait each night for a new one.
