About the Author
Dr. Morris Retired senior lecturer in the Department of Automatic Control & Systems Engineering at the University of Sheffield. He has taught the undergraduate course in measurement and instrumentation for nearly 30 years, as well as undergraduate courses in robot technology, engineering design and laboratory skills, and graduate level courses in robot control, modeling and measurement for quality assurance. He is the author of eight books and more than 130 research papers in the fields of measurement and instrumentation and robot control.

Dr. Langari is a professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Texas A&M University and interim head of the Department of Engineering Technology and Industrial Distribution. He earned bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees from the University of California, Berkeley. He has held research positions at NASA Ames Research Center, Rockwell International Science Center, United Technologies Research Center, as well as the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory. Langari's expertise is in the area of computational intelligence with application to mechatronic systems and industrial automation. He has played a significant role in the development of theoretical foundations of fuzzy logic control and its applications to problems in mechanical engineering. His work on stability of fuzzy control systems is widely recognized as pioneering the use of nonlinear systems analysis techniques to fuzzy logic.

quite good, but incomplete

I bought this book for my lectures in sensors and instrumentation. The book is quite good but I was dissapointed on the digital transmisi�n protocols and inteligent devices. I found these sections quite poor. The book also skips on ISA 5.1, which is quite important for any practitioner.

Part melodrama and part parable, Mitch Albom's The Five People You Meet in Heaven weaves together three stories, all told about the same man: 83-year-old Eddie, the head maintenance person at Ruby Point Amusement Park. As the novel opens, readers are told that Eddie, unsuspecting, is only minutes away from death as he goes about his typical business at the park. Albom then traces Eddie's world through his tragic final moments, his funeral, and the ensuing days as friends clean out his apartment and adjust to life without him. In alternating sections, Albom flashes back to Eddie's birthdays, telling his life story as a kind of progress report over candles and cake each year. And in the third and last thread of the novel, Albom follows Eddie into heaven where the maintenance man sequentially encounters five pivotal figures from his life (a la A Christmas Carol). Each person has been waiting for him in heaven, and, as Albom reveals, each life (and death) was woven into Eddie's own in ways he never suspected. Each soul has a story to tell, a secret to reveal, and a lesson to share. Through them Eddie understands the meaning of his own life even as his arrival brings closure to theirs.

Albom takes a big risk with the novel; such a story can easily veer into the saccharine and preachy, and this one does in moments. Albom, newspaper columnist and radio broadcaster, is, of course, best known as the author of the astonishingly successful Tuesdays with Morrie (1997). This is his first novel. With an appropriately fable-like tone, Albom tells the story of Eddie, "an old man with a barrel chest." But for us, Eddie's story "begins at the end, with Eddie dying in the sun"--at Ruby Pier, an amusement park by the sea, where he spent most days, for despite his advanced years, he worked as a maintenance man on the rides. He dies on his eighty-third birthday trying to save a little girl from an accident. Eddie wakes up in heaven, where he is informed that "there are five people you meet in heaven. Each . . . was in your life for a reason. You may not have known the reason at the time, and that is what heaven is for. For understanding your life on earth." And, not surprisingly, this is what the novel is about: Eddie coming to appreciate his 83 years of mortal life; the novel's "point" is that apparently insignificant lives do indeed have their own special kind of significance. Powerful but dull

Similar in tone and emotion with his novel Tuesdays with Morrie. I think that the greatest achievement of this story is the dreamlike, subconscious mood and setting the author creates. He can get a bit syrupy, but not too bad to make this contextually a problem.

Albom raises some interesting, thought provoking questions and leaves some unanswered, which makes for a better read, especially considering the subject.

Short but neat

Interesting book. I wouldn't say life-changing or super motivating but I may have read it too quickly and missed the impact. That being said, the twist at the end did give me a little chill and made my eyes a little misty. Based on an interesting idea and does make you think a little about the purpose of your life and how you interact with others. Kind of short but I would definitely recommend

I just flipped open to a random "look inside" page, and read of Bing recording "an acclaimed choral rendition of the traditional folk song "Ol Man River" with Paul Whiteman.... Run screaming from this! the first page I look at contains this outrageous historical blunder. How does this reach this level? bad research and bad history and bad facts. Run fast....

About the Author

Patricia J. Benjamin, PhD, NCTMB, is a licensed massage

therapist, educator, author, and appreciative massage and

bodywork client. She has a deep respect for massage therapy

as an art, science, and wellness practice. She has studied

its traditions and watches for trends in the massage

therapy profession today.

Building on her earlier background in sports and fitness,

Dr. Benjamin graduated from the Chicago School of

Massage Therapy in the mid-1980s. She was drawn to massage

as an active, hands-on therapy whose foundations

dovetail with her former career in health, physical education,

and recreation.After having a full-time massage therapy

practice, she gravitated back to education, first as an

association education director, and then as a teacher and

massage school administrator. Over the years, she has

served on various committees involved in the development

of ethical standards and national certification for massage

therapists, and the accreditation of massage programs.

Dr. Benjamin has taught at the high school and college

levels, and enjoys developing curriculum materials for the

career-oriented courses offered in vocational programs.

She holds master’s and advanced study degrees in education

with a specialty in curriculum development from

Northern Illinois University. A doctorate in recreation

and leisure studies from Purdue University has deepened

her appreciation of the many facets of wellness and

grounded her in a variety of research methods.

Frances M.Tappan approached Patricia Benjamin to

join her as coauthor of Healing Massage Techniques for its

3rd edition (1998). Since Dr.Tappan’s passing in 1999,

Dr. Benjamin has continued to update and improve

Tappan’s Handbook of Healing Massage Techniques, and it

remains a standard in the field today. Dr. Benjamin

authored Professional Foundations for Massage Therapists

(2009) as a resource for students to learn about the profession,

its history, varied competencies, ethics, and business

practices.

In her leisure time, Dr. Benjamin enjoys reading historical

fiction and nonfiction, gardening, tai chi and qi

gong, Zen archery, and swimming. Her outdoor pursuits

include hiking, canoeing, and a new interest in birding.

She currently resides in Chicago, Illinois.

Good for school

The book has basic coverage of various massage techniques and modalities. It is good to have for the school study or for the test prep. you can effectively but fast to review massage techniques. If you working on something more specific than general massage, you would need a more specific book. I am glad I had it for school, but I don't think there is any reason to keep it on the shelf any more.

I did not find the information useful in learning manual therapies. It was very basic information that can be easily found on quick google searches. The only compliment I have regarding the purchase is that the videos are replicas of the chapters, so if you watch the videos, there is no need to read the chapters.

Great Book

use in the Art of War. It's very thought provoking. Watch the moves he describes
