Iraq made human

It make the everyday struggles of a woman from Iraq painstakingly real. The entire book is an email correspondence between a woman/mother in London that works part-time at the BBC and a married woman in Baghdad who is a professor. What starts as a communication for work knowledge ends up as an inspiring friendship. At times I was angry with the woman from London, so spoiled when she shares her seemingly trivial life, but she knows how lucky she is. It is the sharing and friendship that helps the woman from Iraq plow on. It is caring that keeps us alive. Beautiful true story about an amazing friendship.

I loved this book and was extremely moved by it.

A UK journalist gets in touch with an English lecturer in Baghdad looking initially for an interview, which soon turns into the most extraordinary friendship. The result is an incredible collection of emails between two women describing the reality of living in Baghdad contrasted with life in the UK. Amongst things May Witwit has met Sadam Hussein, taught human rights to girls in Baghdad, and been put on a hit list.

Fascinating story

This is a true story of how May Witwit, a university English professor, lives in a war zone; how she gets to the hair dresser, how her students manage attending class -- among other daily activities. Her husband is a Sunni while she is Shia and both their families disown them. Only her mother remains in touch. I was spellbound reading this book. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in how people manage to live their lives while bombs and dead people drop around them.

Okay, but way too many errors for a 6th edition textbook

It does an okay job at giving explanations of the concepts and proofs. But the example problems that are worked out have far too many errors in them to be trustworthy. Which by the 6th edition of the book is just unacceptable. I know that most professor's textbooks only have their name on them and it is their TA's that are responsible for a lot of the editing, but honestly I would not want my name associated with a book that has as many errors as this has. Some are simple and easily spotted while others are not so simple because they are in key concepts that you are just learning. If you have a good teacher that points out when the errors are there or works through the examples himself or herself then the book can be useful. But it is not something you can really use to study on your own reliably. The book also falls into the trap of giving a few examples and then a ton of questions in the problem sets that are not easily solved using the examples as guides. So you probably want to pick something like 2008+ Solved Problems in Electromagnetics (Electromagnetics and Radar) or Schaum's Outline of Electromagnetics, 4th Edition (Schaum's Outlines) to help you with solving problems if your professor assigns homework from the book.

I can only imagine what the 1st edition was like. You could read this book cover-to-cover and not ...

This book is an insult to human knowledge, I don't understand how it has 3.5 stars. The writing is dense, it has no substance whatsoever, and is pathetically ridden with typos in the solutions despite being the 6th edition. I can only imagine what the 1st edition was like. You could read this book cover-to-cover and not walk away with an ounce of understanding about electromagnetics. He literally just throws formulas at you and provides you with a bunch of silly problems with no academic value and just train you to pattern match.

Dr. Sadiku should really do all engineering students a favor and cease writing books. I cannot believe a publisher would allow such a waste of paper to enter the world's knowledge base.

Rhino NURBS 3D Modeling is an excellent book not only on building models with this popular modeling tool but on computer modeling in general. Many of the techniques described here, such as Boolean operations and trimming surfaces, can be applied to building models in other programs.

Many chapters adeptly demonstrate Rhino's power as a NURBS modeler (Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines). NURBS is a computer modeling paradigm that makes it easy to build curved surfaces and organic shapes. Certain chapters go into detail on building shapes such as a dragonfly (based on a photographic template), a coffeepot with a lid, and a cartoon-style boy character.

The most interesting chapter covers the process of modeling a human face based on a plaster casting, and it offers numerous photos documenting the process of creating the plaster mold from someone's face, filling it to get the cast, and digitizing it into Rhino using a digitizing scribe.

The accompanying CD-ROM contains all the models discussed in the book, plus a quasi-demo version of Rhino that has all features enabled. ("Quasi" because saving things from the program becomes disabled after the 15th time.) Rhino NURBS 3D Modeling works well for new Rhino users and for artists new to computer modeling interested in learning how a dedicated NURBS modeler works. --Mike Caputo

This is a great package for libraries since the CD-ROM includes a complete demonstration version of Rhino, which can be used 15 times on any individual machine (before being disabled); that is, a library can check it out to as many patrons as that library has, and they can all try it 15 times. I had this book a long time ago, but the price on Amazon was a bit high for a little while, but when I finally saw it at a more reasonable $19.95, I jumped on it. The book was in excellent condition and the disk was still sealed, what more can you ask for, especially considering the age of this book.

I had a hard time find I g books to use in my class for this software. This book has some tutorials in it that will work with current versions. A good resource. A little dry to start with but overall a decent training aid.

Mixed feelings

This book can't seem to decide if it is for an advanced user, or a beginner. The first half of the book gives very brief explanations of the major features of the program. An a fairly experienced user, i understand what is written, but i feel that beginners would be confused. The explanations seem to be too simple, as if to not scare new users, but then not enough is written, which will leave new users asking questions. So in this respect, the first half of the book is neither adequate for beginners or pros. The second half of the book are tutorials. The dragon fly tutorial is appropriate for this book, because it is easy to follow, and teaches some essential modeling techniques. The camera tutorial was challenging, and might be too complex to follow for a new user, even if he/she read and understands the first half of the book. The coffee pot tutorial is EXTREMELY complex, and i feel is WAY too advanced for people reading this book. It just seems out of place with most of the book, which seems to assume that you're a novice. So in summary, i have mixed feelings about this book. The explanations of the features are too skimpy/simplistic, which left me unchallenged, but then some of the tutorials went over my head. But i still have to recommend it because it's the only retail book for Rhino available.
