DON'T BITE OFF MORE THAN YOU CAN CHEW

As an experienced bicycle traveller, I approached this book with considerable interest. Briggs began his tour of America at what was perhaps the worst possible starting point, Miami. His experiences there seem to have coloured his views for the remainder of the trip, as he proceeded throughout to record nothing but criticisms of America, Americans and all things American. In my opinion his journey was far too ambitious for the time available, hence he suffered badly. Briggs would have done much better - again in my opinion - had he attempted only half the distance and taken his time about it. He would then have enjoyed it more and might have seen his experiences in a much more favourable light. A lesson for all aspiring bicycle travellers.

I am surprised there are not more reviews. This is a great read, good mix of commentary on the journey and humor, the author never takes himself to seriously, and that makes it all the more enjoyable. I wish the author wrote a few more books.

Very well written. Entertaining view of a Brit bicycling around USA. He didn't do the typical route of going across the US from west to east rather he meandered along the east coast and then west to the Mississippi and down to New Orleans.

The book begins with an excellent tour of the MFC document/view architecture. As the author notes, Visual C++ wizards let you generate simple, functional multiple-document interface (MDI) applications, but you're on your own after that. To remedy this gap, the author shares his expertise for building better MDI applications. He includes how to manage more than one view, as well as how to save and reload files effectively.

To answer this question, let us look at a typical MFC programming scenario. First, you attend an MFC training session or read some introductory books on MFC programming. You quickly become able to write and customize small tutorial applications. AppWizard and ClassWizard allow you reach an unprecedented level of productivity. Your applications support the multiple document interface (MDI) and have a professional-looking user interface with a floating toolbar, a status bar, printing and print preview, and so on.

One day, you start wondering about how to implement new features that were not explicitly covered in the training session. For example:

Make your application remember the last active document and automatically reopen it. Support multiple kinds of views on the same document and allow the user to explicitly open any kind of view. This book is written for all MFC developers who wish to solve their MFC-related problems and at the same time learn advanced MFC techniques that will allow them to add a range of sophisticated features to their applications.

This book assumes a basic proficiency both in the C++ language and in MFC programming as well as a knowledge of how to use the Visual C++ integrated development environment and tools such as AppWizard and ClassWizard. The Visual C++ wizards are discussed only when used in nonstandard ways to achieve a specific result.

To benefit fully from this book, you should already understand the basic MFC concepts presented in the Scribble tutorial described in the Visual C++ documentation: the document/view architecture, message maps, the UPDATE_COMMAND_UI mechanism, dialog data exchange (DDX), and so on. Typically, you will either have followed the Scribble tutorial, attended a training session in MFC programming, or read one of the many introductory books on this topic.

Of course, having a more extensive background in MFC programming will not hurt! Quite to the contrary. Based on feedback from reviewers and colleagues, I know that this book will also appeal to experienced MFC developers, who will find many useful techniques to add to their bag of MFC programming tricks.

Finally, reading this book will allow all MFC developers to improve their understanding of fundamental MFC concepts and sharpen their MFC programming skills.

How To Use This Book

This book focuses on the 32-bit MFC version 4.x for Windows 95 and Windows NT. However, most techniques and concepts discussed here also apply to older versions of MFC. They should also remain valid for future MFC versions, because they rely on core MFC classes and behaviors that are not likely to evolve in a way that breaks existing code.

I tried to write this book so that it will become a flexible tool that you can use as you want to. This means that you can either read this book from cover to cover--I would certainly appreciate it if you do--or use it as a reference to look up only the specific topics that interest you. Most FAQs are cross-referenced to help you locate all the relevant information you might need even if you jump into the middle of the book.

However, before you start hunting for answers to your MFC questions, I suggest that you take a few minutes to read Chapter 0 (Terminology and Conventions) and Chapter 1 (Document/View Architecture Backgrounder) to make sure that we start on the same ground with respect to fundamental document/view architecture concepts.

What Is on the CD-ROM

The companion CD-ROM contains source code and executables for all of the book's sample programs. The folder hierarchy is organized first by chapter number and then by project name. Thus, the AutoSaveDoc project for Chapter 2 is located in the d:\Chap02\AutoSaveDoc folder, where "d:" is your CD-ROM drive's letter.

All the executables are located under their respective chapter folders. For example, all the executable sample programs for Chapter 2 are located in the d:\Chap02 folder. The EkUtil.h and EkUtil.cpp files located at the root of the hierarchy contain the various helper Ek . . . . . . functions and classes that are presented throughout the book.

You can choose to copy the whole folder hierarchy from the CD-ROM to your hard disk, copy only the examples that are of interest to you, or access the files directly from the CD-ROM. If you copy files from the CD-ROM to your hard disk, remember to remove the read-only attribute from the files on your hard disk.

Not Bad

I bought this book because I recently started trying to learn MFC and C++ together. I started with BASIC and AREXX in the early 90's and moved into C by 2000. I had always wanted to learn C++ and in particular C++ for Windows. Recently I got Visual Studio 2010 and decided to start with a framework (MFC) so I could ease my way into Windows programming. This book helps with some concepts, but because it is designed as a FAQ it is a little short on explanations to go along with its sample code. I like examples, but I really need to understand fully what is going on before I will use something. That being said, I bought Ivan Horton's Beginning Visual C++ 2010 as a companion which I refer to for clarification on some of the things I don't understand in this book. between the two I can usually figure out what I need to know.

As a side note, the reversion of the book I have was written some years ago, so some of the methods are a bit dated. But, overall a decent book and worth a few bucks if you are a novice with MFC.

seemingly inexplicable and nearly inconceivable
abstract concept of printing pagination in
MFC and explain it a concise and provocative fashion.

A great FAQ

This book is not all-inclusive, you should get Jeff Prosise's "Programming Windows with MFC" if you are looking for that. Instead, Kain's book is really the answers to the most frequent, irritating, and time-wasting little problems one finds while programming in MFC. This book should not really be necessary, except that MFC is so badly designed that little things that should be easy to do often end being a great waste of time, while the programmers search for the clumsy and roundabout way out. Should be in every MFC programmer's bookshelf.

Good beginner's guide to native North America

This book is a decent overview of the native inhabitants of North America in general. I liked that Edwin Tunis also talked about the tribes of Canada in addition to the tribes of the 48 continuous states of the USA, which is where most books on this subject stops. The illustrations are also superb.

This is an excellent comprehensive book covering the main tribes of Native Americans, their lives, customs, beliefs, tools, weapons, clothing and shelter. The illustrations are outstanding. I would definitely recommend this book. It is great to see the similarities and the differences between tribes.

Was not too impressed with this version from 3D total, the tutorials were too broad for the topic Sci-fi & fantasy and didn't offer specific types of tutorial topics other than how to paint a character or a landscape. And a good chunk of the book offered quick tips that would only be used for certain situations like "Draw a dagger" or "Draw a box and arrow." Finally, I'm always disappointed when the book does not have the tutorial for the cover art.

The dictionary still defines nymphomania as "excessive sexual desire in a female," yet, as Groneman shows, the condition may not even exist. Nymphomania, she argues, is a metaphor reflecting society's ambivalence toward and discomfort with female desire. Victorians considered nymphomania an organic disease. In the early 20th century, psychoanalytic theory associated nymphomania with frigidity, penis envy, lesbianism and prostitutionAall thought to stem from a woman's "immature" inability to enjoy vaginal orgasms. By the mid-20th century, scientific evidence of female sexual response led to even more confused theories of nymphomania, as "sexperts" sought to reconcile evidence of multiple orgasms and easy arousal with notions of morality. Groneman, a professor of history and co-editor of To Toil the Livelong Day: America's Women at Work, 1780-1980, sketches the historical and social contexts in which nymphomania was considered, and enlivens her text with numerous medical and legal case histories. She exposes the historical association of nymphomania with "lower" classes and new immigrants, and documents the disturbing tendency to blame rape and incest on the alleged provocation of the victim. Groneman concludes, "[E]ven though the sexual revolution appears to have changed the double standard about who gets to enjoy sex or how much sex is 'normal,' a deep ambivalence still exists... toward female sexuality." Groneman explored the annals of American medicine, law, and popular culture to trace the evolution of nymphomania, a term so prone to fluctuating definitions that it resides, she observes, strictly "in the eye of the beholder." Generally understood as a pathological degree of female sexual desire, nymphomania was once considered so dire that doctors removed the ovaries and clitoris of healthy patients in pursuit of a socially acceptable female sexuality, one that is unthreatening to men and with motherhood as its goal. Using case studies as her stepping stones, Groneman presents one disturbing disclosure after another as she moves from the homebound Victorian era into the complexities of twentieth-century womanhood, and deftly analyzes the madonna-whore syndrome, the biases of male sex experts, and all the harm done by Freud's misconceptions about women's orgasms. As Groneman drives home her point that interpretations of nymphomania are closely tied to advances in medicine and human rights, she provides dramatic examples to support her argument that in spite of improvements, fear and confusion regarding women's sexuality are still rampant and destructive. Excellent History Of Nymphomania Since The 19th Century

Groneman's book is an insightful look at Western, primarily American, cultural attitudes towards female sexuality from the 19th century to the present, with emphasis on the so-called "disease" of nymphomania. She begins in the mid-1800's, offering cases studies of young girls and housewives. These women, either voluntarily or through family pressure, sought out medical treatement to cure their high sex drive. Many doctors of this era viewed nymphomania as a physical malady. So they attempted to "cure" these women through weird and disgusting procedures such as having leeches suck blood from the vagina. Other doctors tried even more extreme surgeries, such as clitorectomies or removal of the ovaries.

By the 20th century American ideas about female sexuality had become slightly more progressive. Now women were expected to have healthy and happy sexual relations. But, of course, only within the confines of heterosexual marriage. However, largely influenced by the theories of supposed sex experts such as Freud, it was now believed that women should experience orgasms only through vaginal intercourse and that women who needed clitoral stimulation were either frigid or psychologically maladjusted. Of course, women who were lesbians, prostitutes or sought to have sex outside of marriage were still considered nymphomaniacs and in need of treatment.

The 1920s was a decade of modernization, with many women seeking greater equal rights and becoming more comfortable with their own sexuality. This progress continued in the 1960's and 1970's with the availability of the birth control pill and the resurgent feminist movement. Today young women are certainly more upfront about their sexual feelings compared to 100 years ago. But still a double standard remains with sexually promiscuous men considered to be "studs" while females who are equally sexually active are often called "sluts". Obviously, this needs to change.

I believe we should strive towards a sexually open and honest society where both women and men are able to be as sexually active, or inactive, as they wish to be without any social stigma attached. Of course, America rose up from Puritan roots and is still probably the most sexually repressed and immature of all the modern Western nations. Hopefully we will eventually grow beyond this childish and unhealthy attitude towards sex and especially women's sexuality.

Why is America so afraid of sexuality?

A fascinating history of a pseudo-medical term used to mark overly sexual women as abnormal, diseased or deviant. The author is professor of history at John Jay College of Criminal Justice.

She examines the evolution of this term from the mid-nineteenth century to the present ( The book was published in 2000 ) and discusses the medical and legal issues surrounding the term and the women diagnosed with it.

Male nymphomaniacs ( having a condition called satyriasis or Don Juanism) are treated briefly mainly because it was not given a lot of attention until recently because males are expected to be promiscuous and highly sexed. The more recent term, sex-addiction, is applied to males and females. Ironically, males are now diagnosed with it more than women. An interesting historical flip-flop.

Although the term has taken on either a joking or positive connotation in the 21st century, even in our so-called 'enlightened' age, the negative effects of the term linger on. There is still a double standard concerning women who want more sex than their partners or want to engage in sex outside of a 'monogamous committed relationship.' Women are still punished if they 'disobey' their 'natural' inclination toward a stifled libido. All the bull-crap spewed out by popular science books on evolutionary psychology has only served to reinforce this double standard ( see Sex at Dawn: How We Mate, Why We Stray, and What It Means for Modern Relationshipsfor a rebuttal of this. ).

If you are interested in this subject, it is worth a read.

It is well to remember that there are still places in the United States where it is illegal to sell sex toys. A comedic movie dealing with the history of the vibrator and female orgasm is Hysteria (2012) or see the book The Technology of Orgasm: "Hysteria," the Vibrator, and Women's Sexual Satisfaction (Johns Hopkins Studies in the History of Technology)to learn how the vibrator was originally developed to relieve doctors from having to manually masturbate their female patients to orgasm to relieve them of their hysterical symptoms. Does Nymphomania Really Exist?

The existence of nymphomania is the question that the author tries to answer by studying the history of the " disease" from the 1700s until the current day. The author has examined medical records as well as common literature to determine what was considered to be nymphomania during each period in history. She examines nymphomania when it was considered to be an organic disease, through the sexual revolution when it was believed to be a psychological issue into the current day where it is considered to be a moral issue. What defines nymphomania is the continually shifting line that makes it difficult to determine whether the disease even exists. Although most males would love to believe that the disease exists, at this time it is questionable whether women who desire a lot of sex are any different from males in a similar position. As the author points out, there is a category of "disease" for males called satyriasis, however males are rarely diagnosed with it. The gender gap that exists is amazing.

I would highly recommend reading this book. It is a fascinating look at that history of sex in the United States, and around the world from the 1700s until the present. It is also an incredible study into the sociology and psychology of sex for the same period of time. Overall, this is a well-written book which contains a wealth of fascinating information.
