This book explores monsters through the ages and throughout the world. With a brilliant set of bizarre and fantastical illustrations, "Monsters" provides a dark yet engrossing visual history of fearsome beasts from every age and culture. Christopher Dell investigates what the existence of monsters even if only in our heads says about humankind, and explores such questions as how monsters have survived the millennia; why they are universal; and, why we find the same one-eyed giants in Japan and in ancient Greece, or the same dragons in Europe and China.

I enjoyed reading this bestiary about monsters and the pictures in this book are a great collection of art on these different monsters of legend, folklore and mythology. The author has organized his material in such a way that it helped me to understand about these beasts and creatures.

A Sceptics Book Review
By Geoff Cowan
Monsters are the creatures that go against the call of nature. With no evidence for their existence in science, monsters are the description of something that is evil and objectionable. Derived from the Latin monstrum, monster is now applied not only to animals, but humans with objectionable characteristics.

This is Christopher Dell’s third book. The first being an art history related book and the second a book on Monsters: Devils Demons Vampires Werewolves & other Magical Creatures. Hence this book being reviewed is no doubt a development from the research and material that was gained from the previous book on monsters.

Not dealing with people such as “The Elephant Man” or modern day real “monsters” such as serial killers, Dells’ book deals with the types of monsters, those from fiction and that of mythology. Legend says that monsters produce physical harm and mental fear by its actions or it’d appearance. Dell has created a book that has described many of the monsters that have been written into history from all over the world. Appearing in the form of “Echidna” from Greek mythology about 700 BCE, monsters have been part of our fiction and culture since that time. But, as previously stated, many of the monsters that have been created were done so without due regard for any evidence for their existence.

From this beginning, the pseudo-science of Cryptozoology developed, which looks at creatures that may or may not exist. Examples include the Loch Ness Monster, Bigfoot or the Penrith “Panda”*. But this is out of the scope of this well-illustrated book, specifically dealing with monsters and mythical creatures. Starting with Gods, Dell takes the reader on a journey covering all types of creatures from demons, dragons, water monsters, hybrids and ghosts. One interesting chapter is that of the monster from the uncharted areas of the world, where cartographers drew side images of “monsters” and people from far away lands. This aspect of “monsterology” is forgotten as the cartographer of the Middle Ages was allowed creativity to decorate their maps. Perhaps as a result of these creative drawings that many a sailor or explorer claimed the existence of these creatures.

The illustrations are excellent and of high quality. Dell discusses aspects of the monsters but then displays images from art history. Many of the images are from private collections and some have never been published before. But the spread of monsters Dell discusses not only come from Europe but also from Asia, Africa and other mythical countries.

Dell has been interviewed and a number of Podcasts with his insight into monsters have been broadcast, especially on the “Monster Talk” podcast in December 2010. Those readers that are not aware, the Monster Talk Podcast deals with specific matters of Cryptozoology and can be located on the Skeptic Society website. ([...]). that podcast places a bright light on monsters from a sceptic perspective and is highly recommended listening.

This is a book that would be of interest to the researcher or that reader that enjoys history of the para-normal or crypto-zoological type issues. Dell has achieved a success with this book and would make a nice addition to a young sceptic’s library.

Twisting in the Wind: The Murderess and the English Press, by Judith Knelman

Women accused of murder in nineteenth-century England got bad press. Broadsides, newspapers, and books depicted their stories in gruesome detail, often with illustrations of the crime scene, the courtroom proceedings, and the execution. This sensational coverage fed the public appetite for stories of female deviancy and punishment.

Judith Knelman contends that the portrayal of murder by women was linked to a broader public agenda, set and controlled by men. Women were expected to be devoted to giving and sustaining life. Aggression was "masculine." Thus a woman who killed posed a threat to patriarchal authority.

Knelman describes the range and incidence of murder by women in England. She analyses case histories of different kinds of murder, and explores how press representations of the murderess contributed to the Victorian construction of femininity. She also suggests that class and gender discrimination pushed women to kill.

Twisting in the Wind is a comprehensive and balanced account that will appeal to true crime fans, sociologists, criminologists, historians, and researchers in women's studies.

Flight of the Falcon: Demolishing Myths of Indo Pak Wars 1965-1971, by Sajad S. Haider

Flight of the Falcon is about the spectacular episodes, trials and tribulations I had to face during my 28 years in the Pakistan Air Force. There is more in my story as it traverses through Pakistan's misfortunes soon after the death of Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Au Jinnah. It begins with my encounter with the father of the nation, his unceremonious death followed by the murder of his legacy of unity. Ayub Khan's mid-night coup was a violation of the role the Quaid-e-Azam had bequeathed on the armed forces. The domino effect of dictatorial rule by unprofessional generals with unflattering soldiering history and self seeking corrupt politicians has finally brought Pakistan to its knees. No lessons were learnt and history keeps punishing us. What a legacy for our children to inherit, for which the nation continues to pay a price. What will it take to change our course? Every year the 1965 war is celebrated remorselessly to keep under wraps the failures of our leadership at the time. I feel cheated and enraged at the loss of the many gallant men who were martyred believing they were fighting for a sacred cause. The 1971 war was a corollary to the 1965 war and the Kargil conflict followed in the same vein. Shallow personal interests were projected as national interests by dictators. All these wars and conflicts proved to be catastrophic for the economy and security of Pakistan. Were these conflicts avoidable? If not, why were they not planned and directed with professional dexterity? Why were no lessons learnt from each disaster? Such questions have hardly been addressed candidly from fear of retribution by the powers that be.

A great read from a daring Pakistan pilot
By Saladin
Its a great read. The writer has written a great account about his life in PAF, about 2 wars with India in 1965 and 1971. 1965 war is glorified in Pakistan as a defense day, when the Pakistani troops successfully defended Pakistan. here lies the tales, who did it and the credit! Now, Pakistan was ruled by Army (martial law). Field Marshal along with Army took all the credit but it was actually the air force that did the job against all odds (numerical superiority of IAF)plus poor planing by the Pakistani generals. PAF saved the skin!

The writer is a passionate Pakistani, wrote about the politics that plagued the defence forces and how upright officers were always sidelined (one being himself- another that i think would be Cecil Chaudhary another PAF pilot)

He has set the record straight by debunking many exaggerated accounts but maintains as accepted by the Indian side ( PVS Mohan books) that PAF performed exceptionally well against the indian airforce. Ironny was that IAF learnt its lessons in the upcoming war while Pakistan troops did not and lost the 1971 war!

A must read!

Excellent!
By Reviewer
Excellent and very moving Book! The author gives an insider's perspective into the PAF's courage in the hour of Pakistan's need. The book highlights the highly intelligent and motivated Pakistanis that have built and secured Pakistan's future as well as shining a revealing light on those who have put their selfish and treasonous desires before the well being of the Pakistani people. This book is a bright beacon of the much needed truth that has been sorely missing in establishment narratives. Well done Sajad Haider. In the end, truth will out and Pakistan shall rise again.

Mai-Kai: History and Mystery of the Iconic Tiki Restaurant, by Tim Glazner

In 1956, a few brash young men created the Mai-Kai Restaurant and bar in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, by poaching key staff from Don the Beachcomber's, a Polynesian-themed Chicago restaurant. The Mai-Kai became the playground of celebrities and playboys, and the beautiful women working there used it as a jumping-off point for adventure and fame. Through first-hand stories and more than 400 images, this book documents the history, allure, and enduring legacy of the mid-twentieth-century Tiki era. Focusing on the period 1955 to 1971, it is the story of how the Mai-Kai and its iconic elements came to exist, and the men and women who shaped it and went on to shape the world. Now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Mai-Kai is the only place on earth that still serves the "Rum Rhapsodies" that kicked off that indulgent era.

Review
If you have a passion, pursue it. And if you then share the results of that passion, its energy will transfer on the recipients of your work: Any true labor of love WILL find those who have eyes to see and hearts to feel that love. Tim Glazner followed the call of the Tiki to show and tell the story of one of America's most extraordinary Tiki temples, and the results will boggle the minds and widen the eyes of the readers, irrevocably casting the spell of America's mid-century god of recreation over them.
-Sven Kirsten, author Book of Tiki, Tiki Modern, Tiki Pop

The Mai-Kai is the quintessential Tiki bar. It encompasses every element of classic Polynesian Pop from a dramatic public opening to family ownership to celebrity history to longstanding traditions. It now stands as the lone preserved testament to the golden era of the Tiki restaurant and bar. Whether it's mixing a perfect tropical drink while wearing a cabana outfit or overseeing the precise production of replica Mai-Kai mugs, Swanky is a stylish fixture of the Tiki scene. He stands as the expert archivist of Mai-Kai history. His knowledge of details of Mai-Kai artifacts, personnel, and architectural elements is unmatched - even by the owners of the Mai-Kai!
-Otto Von Stroheim, Event producer

There is no one else I trust more to tell the story of the Mai-Kai. Swanky has been a huge supporter and friend for over a decade. My family has been steering the Mai-Kai for more than 60 years and we are glad he is telling the world how special this place truly is. He has created something we can all be proud of.
-Dave Levy, Mai-Kai owner

Glazner's book is also a love letter to the Mai-Kai, a time capsule of Polynesian culture, which opened on Dec. 28, 1956, in Fort Lauderdale. The restaurant hosts Polynesian shows, and its Molokai Bar boasts an exhaustive menu of rummy creations.
- South Florida weekly.

What was it like inside the midcentury Tiki splendor of the famed Mai-Kai restaurant in Fort Lauderdale? A new book, Mai-Kai: History & Mystery of the Iconic Tiki Restaurant, paints a vivid picture through photos, memorabilia and stories from insiders.

The book is written by someone who knows the restaurant intimately: author Tim "Swanky" Glazner, the co-founder of annual Tiki extravaganza The Hukilau, has been hosting the event at the Mai-Kai since 2003. He spent more than a decade researching the book.
-Liquor.com

From the Author
I have been learning about the Mai-Kai and collecting its ephemera for over a decade. As co-creator of the Hukilau event, I had complete access to the people and their stories and the trust to tell them. This began as me simply being a huge fan. As it became a more serious project, it was my quest to tell the world about the amazing people in and around this remarkable place. This book represents many hours spent in back rooms and basements scanning images, countless hours tracking down old timers and interviewing them, and a ridiculous number of hours turning all these disparate stories into a book. I am excited to share what I have learned. As the Mai-Kai's biggest fan, I can tell you, no matter how much you love it, your wonder and admiration will be greatly increased after reading this book.

“The Sixth Order wields the sword of justice and smites the enemies of the Faith and the Realm."

Vaelin Al Sorna was only a child of ten when his father left him at the iron gate of the Sixth Order—a caste devoted to battle. Vaelin will be trained and hardened to the austere, celibate and dangerous life of a warrior of the Faith. He has no family now save the Order.

Vaelin’s father was Battle Lord to King Janus, ruler of the Unified Realm—and Vaelin’s rage at being deprived of his birthright knows no bounds. Even his cherished memories of his mother are soon challenged by what he learns within the Order.

But one truth overpowers all the rest: Vaelin Al Sorna is destined for a future he has yet to comprehend. A future that will alter not only the Realm, but the world.

From Booklist
The first of a trilogy, Blood Song is this British author’s first fantasy novel, and the first one to be printed. It was originally an e-book, as were three science-fiction novels Ryan has also written. The plot is standard: a young boy’s father abandons him at the door of the Sixth, or fighting, Order of the national faith. He is raised to be a warrior, and becomes one of the most effective in the forces of his king, Janus, of the Unified Realm. But a number of vital questions arise as the story progresses, starting with why his father cast him out of the family and into the Faith in the first place. While the plot is standard, it is deftly and originally executed, as are the characters. They are complex characters, not archetypes. The setting is medieval-based, but with a number of original differences (especially the religion!). Ryan’s style makes Blood Song a page-turner. Apt turns of phrase, descriptions that linger, questions answered at unexpected times all make the story definitely superior to much of the genre. It should please a wide audience, but those who do not care for gory fantasy adventure are hereby warned. --Frieda Murray

Review
“Ryan is a new fantasy author destined to make his mark on the genre. His debut novel, Blood Song, certainly has it all: great coming-of-age tale, compelling character and a fast-paced plot. If his first book is any indication of things to come, then all fantasy readers should rejoice.”—Michael J. Sullivan, author of the Riyria Revelations series

“Fans of broadscale epic fantasy along the lines of Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series and George R. R. Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire novels should find this debut much to their liking.”—Library Journal

“Just impossible to put down…I had to read it ASAP and to reread it immediately on finishing, as I could not part from the wonderful universe the author created.”—Fantasy Book Critic

“Ryan hits all the high notes of epic fantasy—a gritty setting, ancient magics, ruthless intrigue, divided loyalties and bloody action...[A] promising debut.”—Publishers Weekly

“Deftly and originally executed…A page-turner.”—Booklist

“Ryan’s style is somewhat relaxed and paced extremely well…[Blood Song is] like the love child of Patrick Rothfuss and Joe Abercrombie writing the story of Jon Snow (of George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire) in the Night’s Watch...A top contender for most impressive debut of the year. It is a thick, meaty novel of substance…A powerful epic that, while ending with a sense of closure, hints at more to come.”—SFFWorld.com

Superbly written coming-of-age fantasy
By Fate
This book is in a class of its own. Engaging, fast-paced, an epic that doesn't bog you down with a hundred different point of views or side story arcs.

The story itself follows that of Vaelin Al Sorna, a scared young boy who grows up to be a natural born leader and strategist, feared and respected throughout the world. He reminded me of Inda from the Sherwood Smith books, destined from birth to be of great import to the realm, bonded to his brothers through shared hardships, denied satisfaction and relief to fulfill his duty. Cunning and intelligent, with enough compassion to walk the line between warrior and murderer, he fights with ruthless efficiency to make a difference, to try and do the right thing when all it seems his actions accomplish is more suffering, all the while battling his own inner demons and self-doubt. There are some strong themes present, of growing up and of lost innocence, of sacrifice and of betraying your morals and beliefs.

The structure of the book was reminiscent of "The Name of the Wind" in that it's told from the perspective of a scribe/historian chronicling the deeds of our protagonist as he narrates his tale in the present. This device does not detract from the story and break the immersion, rather it serves to set the scene for each consecutive portion of Vaelin's life, bringing the events that take place full circle; it does not in fact reveal the plot, but only adds to the suspense.

The world-building was solid. Never did I lack for any visual representation of the lands discussed, magical/religious/cultural systems mentioned, or felt confused about how things came to be.

The fact that this enormous tome could be purchased for the price of a soda astounds me. With such a high degree of writing and storytelling that kept me enraptured almost a full day and a half, I'd have expected it to have cost at least ten times as much and come with a number of literary awards attached. It really is one of those books I'll probably remember for the rest of my life.

WOAH!!
By Se
So I just spent the entire day (starting at 10:00 am and now it's 2:00 am) reading this book and it completely blew me away!! I'm not very good at writing comprehensive reviews, so I'll just highlight two things that I really loved about this book that I think is missing from a lot of other really good fantasy works (the ingredients that make it go beyond five stars).

1) I really hate the endless pages of self-loathing that many fantasy authors feel compelled to write whenever heroes need to kill. It's a very important point to carry across that killing, even in the name of "good", is sometimes necessary, but never without an incalculable price. Necessity cannot alchemize an evil act into something other. The heavy handed way in which this is usually done in fantasy fiction is when the hero rails ceaselessly against their own actions, decrying themselves as monsters, at which point they are embraced by some love interest who tells them that they are really a good person after all. It just always seemed to me that such self loathing is unbecoming in a hero since it's purely a selfish feeling that doesn't help anyone else. I can usually put up with this for like 20 pages but when it becomes a recurring theme, I get really annoyed. There's none of this in this book. I'm not sure exactly how the author managed to convey it, but there's a certain sense of dignity about Vaelin that tells you that he feels the weight of the lives he's taken without him resorting to whining (so he actually whines for about 2 paragraphs before he essentially gets slapped and told to stop feeling sorry for himself).

2) The author has a real gift for introducing plot details that take a while to understand (adding flavor to the story along the way) but which are satisfactorily resolved in the end (very few loose ends here). My favorite was the story of the "Witch's Bastard" which we are introduced to halfway in the book. At first, I had no idea what the story was supposed to mean in the context of the plot, but I think by the end, I could make a pretty good guess, and trying to interpret the story really allowed me to see everything that happened in a new light (very cool!).

Please, please get this book. It was absolutely awesome! Best fantasy I've read in the past five years.

A fantastic debut which is very reminiscent of those by Lynch and Rothfuss
By M. Wanchoo
NOTE: This is the same book which was earlier being sold for $2.99 however it was sold by the author. Now that it has been picked up by Penguin, they have set the price and its still not that much. This is still a 500-plus page story with a slightly different cover & of course the author mentioned this would be happening nearly 9 days ago on his blog.

ANALYSIS: Blood Song is another of those books that I discovered a few months earlier, thanks to Amazon's cool algorithm for suggesting titles I might like based on my previous "Buying and Search" history. Previously I had stumbled upon Zero Sight by B Justin Shier the same way and the way that book turned out to be, I have learnt to keep an eye out for such Amazon recommendations.

Blood Song begins with a first person narrative featuring Lord Verniers Alishe Someren, a chronicler that has been chosen to write about the main character Vaelin Al-Sorna and about the journey that they both will undertake. The story then begins Vaelin's past as when as a child he's commanded to join the Sixth Order of the Faith of the Unified Realm. Thus begins Vaelin's journey wherein he will learn to wield weapons and become a famed warrior of the unified realm that will also earn him many names all across various nations and regions. Friends and foes alike will be drawn to him in differing amounts. But when all is said and done, Vaelin's journey has only begun as the reader will learn more about his past as well as that of his realm.

One searches for the next best thing in fantasy, often going through many books in search of the book that will enthrall you completely. I almost missed on this beauty by buying it but then never getting around to reading it. I owe thanks to Michael Sullivan for reminding me about this book and what a book it is. Beginning from the events in the past to the current story going on currently, this setup has been explored in various fantasy, historical and other genre novels.

The most recent famous example being The Name Of The Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. In fact a similarity between those two books can be seen in regards to the protagonist's story and their growth via a university/military school setting. What differentiates these two books is a terrific conclusion to the book as well as themes about war and its follies. Also this was my observation but I found some shades of David Gemmell in Anthony Ryan's storytelling style and prose. It is heartening to see a Brit take up the mantle of heroic, epic fantasy from one of fantasy's most distinguished writers as well as a fellow British writer.

This book is more akin to a traditional epic fantasy wherein it's set in a pseudo-European setting and with a world history that is unveiled slowly and tantalizingly. At the same time, there is a core mystery at the heart of this plotline, why was Vaelin sent to the sixth order? What really happened with his parents? Who is the One Who Waits? These questions and much more abound this volume and will tempt readers into coming back for the later parts of this trilogy. The book focuses in the past as well as the present and the author has tantalizingly kept both time periods shrouded in mystery. This thread is what powers the book throughout and makes the story such a strong one.

Characterization is also a strong point in this opening volume, even though we get a singular narrative voice for the majority of the book. The author has created a fascinating side character cast particularly King Janus, Princess Lyrna just to name a few, these characters make the story even more fascinating and with the increase in POV character cast in "Tower Lord" (book II). I can't wait to see which other characters get their own narrative voices. The book ends on a strong note and with a twist that is hard to anticipate, giving the readers a complete story if they want to read just this book however I'm sure once the readers finish this book they will want to read "Tower Lord" the next in the Raven's Shadow trilogy.

Anthony Ryan's Blood Song is a tremendous debut; it has a fast paced, action packed and character driven story. Qualities to admire in any genre story and most of all in an epic fantasy one. Give this book a read, if you have ever felt that Indie books have no quality to them, give this book a read if you are tired of the same morass of stories in the epic fantasy genre, give this book a read if you want a well written story by a newbie author and lastly give this book a read if you want to read a story that's closest to those written by David Gemmell.

I found this book on accident and the title caught my eye. I was looking for a book to entertain my friend who broke his leg and found this. I was aiming for "I Hope They Serve Beer In Hell" and I ended up getting this one too. It's really funny and perfect for the college student/graduate that knows what it is like to just get by whether it be riding coattails or what have you. Great gift, probably more suitable for a guy but I am a girl and thoroughly enjoyed the book and ended up buying myself a copy later on. Good as a coffee table book and to read straight through. Highly recommended.

Amazing!
By Paul Davidson
While the book is titled and themed around 'Faking It', you will come to realize that if you try these things, you will unwittingly improve yourself over time. There was a ton of good advice geared towards young adults coming out of college and in their early 20s, and also had a great mix of humor in with it. Basically it is a great self-improvement book that keeps you intensely interested beginning to end by offering out true advice mixed in with incredibly humorous sarcastic side notes.

Life's Easy Little Shortcuts
By C. Houston
A very funny book full of great advice for guys on how to seem just a little bit better than you actually are. Topics range from the practical, ordering wine and throwing a cocktail party with minimal effort, to the extreme, making up jail stories and doing drugs while looking respectable. The book can be read in an afternoon or can be used as a reference guide.
