About the Author

Fritz Wagner is a Research Professor in the Department of Urban Design and Planning at the University of Washington (Seattle). He directs the Northwest Center for Livable Communites and teaches part-time. Before joining UW he was at the University of New Orleans where he founded the College of Urban and Public Affairs and served as its Dean.

Roger Caves is Professor of City Planning, School of Public Affairs, San Diego State University. He received his PhD in Urban Affairs and Public Policy from the University of Delaware in 1982. He is co-author of Planning in the USA, 2nd and 3rd editions (Routledge, 2003, 2008), editor of the Encyclopedia of the City (Routledge, 2005), editor of Exploring Urban America, and author of Land Use Planning: The Ballot Box Revolution. His research areas include urban planning, direct democracy, housing, information technologies and community development, and planning for sustainable development.

Powerful nutritional medicine

I am astounded at what I have learned from this book. I have type two diabetes and have tried many natural solution to control my diabetes without drugs. MgCl2 "oil" rubbed over my body dropped my blood sugar to 86 three hours after a dinner meal. I was shocked. I had been taking 1200 mg of magnesium daily, since I knew magnesium lowered insulin resistance. I was still magnesium deficient. The book stated that in order to get sufficient magnesium, you have to take as much orally, up to the bowel tolerance limit, PLUS, rubbing magnesium "oil" over most of your body. I am now waking up nearly every day with blood sugar levels, I.e., below a 100. I am doing this while still controlling the amount of carbs I consume. Dr. Sircus books on baking soda and iodine are equally shocking. Please get these books, if you care about your health.

Will ease your aches and pains

If anything I am giving this book five stars because it got me to order some magnesium chloride, which I have used to treat head aches and different aches and pains quite successfully. Got some aches on your ear? Rub some magnesium chloride on it. Bumped your knee on something? Put some magnesium chloride on it. It works! It is great at pain relief! Want to relax late at night? Take a hot shower and rub some magnesium chloride into your skin and for even more get a deep massage. It makes a difference. Because of the information in this book, If I am around anyone who has a heart attack, I am pouring a bottle of this stuff on them (while the ambulance is on its way of course). Because apparently emergency medicine uses magnesium all of the time to help with heart attacks. There is a large list of things that magnesium helps with according to this book. I am not entirely sure how valid all of the information is, but a lot of it is interesting and I will be trying some things out if the circumstances arise.

Also I recommend that if you use magnesium oil to wash your hands afterwards. I learned the hard way that if you keep using it without washing it off of your hands your hands can become extremely dry and the skin can just scale of off you(it gets pretty bad). Washing your hands afterwards completely remedies this. Also don't touch keyboards and computer screen while you have magnesium oil on your hands.

A Major Piece of the Cardiovascular Epidemic Puzzle Explained

One of the most informative books I have ever read!! When my brother was diagnosed with AFIB last spring, he consulted with a number of the top cardiologists in NY. His regular MD is also highly respected. He was put on the typical Meds & had cardioversion. Next on the list was ablation. My reaction was no to the Meds, & the ablation. With the excellent care & advice of top cardiologists, & toxic Meds, his health was on a downward spiral.
I searched online for weeks for everything related to AFIB. Thru EXA Test of minerals, & RBC Magnesium test, & Dr. Carolyn Dean's book, The Magnesium Miracle, we had already already discovered that magnesium & potassium deficiencies were the issue.
Until I found this book, we worked on increasing magnesium & potassium, thru diet, oral supplementation, Epsom salt baths, & twice a week IVs. Then I read this book. The information has literally been life changing. Magnesium oil was added to the protocol. Subsequent testing every 3 months (on a cellular level), has documented the life saving increase, & healthy ratios, in mineral levels. Fast forward, today he feels better than he can ever remember.
For me, I am a health coach, & have taken oral magnesium for years. The addition of magnesium oil, has improved my health too. I use it EVERY
day. I have recommended magnesium oil to my family, friends, & clients. There are a few contraindications noted in the book. One of my daughters, & a close friend can't use it - it lowers BP too much. They just take oral magnesium.
This book should be REQUIRED reading for all MDs & anyone who wants to be healthy.

About the Author
Julius D. W. Staal was born in Batavia, Netherlands East Indies, in 1917 and began his work in planetariums in The Hague, Netherlands. He left the Netherlands during World War II, became a British citizen, worked in the London Planetarium, and was accepted as a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society, London. In 1960, he joined the staff of the Planetarium of Witswatersrand and the faculty of the University of Rhodesia. Subsequent travels took him back to England, then to the United States, where he open planetariums in New Orleans, Louisiana; Atlanta, Georgia; and Decatur, Georgia. He passed away in July, 1986.

Very interesting and informational

The book provides a good background on the myths relating to the constellations. Especially interesting is the coverage of the Chinese astronomy. However, I kept wishing there was just a little bit more information...

Stargazing is addictive in a good way: the more you do it, the better you get, and the more you want to learn. So even the rankest amateur will begin to build a reference library that will be consulted again and again.

We have several very good books that help us identify heavenly bodies and learn specifics about our corner of the galaxy. This book is a little different: the late Julius D. W. Staal offers the stories behind the stars, an approach that addresses the cultural, rather than the scientific, aspect of constellations.

And as for cultural, it's really more "multi-cultural." Every society on Earth has gazed up at the Milky Way and developed lore and legends describing the drama of the firmament. Most guides that mention constellations use Greco-Roman mythology and names. Interesting, but limiting. What did the Chinese call Orion? What did the Navajo have to say about Cassiopeia ?

You won't need this book out in the field, but it's fun to page through as you become more familiar with the constellations.

Staal published an earlier version of this book meant for people viewing from Britain, and this edition was published after his death. I am sure he would have been happy with the final product, though.

If you're at all interested in astronomy, this is a book you should have on your shelf.

Fun book to poke through!

This book goes ancient and inter-culture with stars and constellations. It makes me wonder why most people think the Greek is the beginning and the end (although that's also covered). I think the biggest kick is the American Indian astronomy. The "NEW" patterns is kind of a misleading... This is strictly early knowledge based.

About the Author

Anna Anthropy is an artist, author and game creatrix working in the East Bay area. As an ambassador for game creation, she works to empower marginalized voices to gain access to game creation. Her first book, Rise of the Videogame Zinesters, is an autobiography / manifesto / DIY guide. She's radical.

Naomi Clark has been designing and producing games for�more than�two decades, ever since she started creating text-based virtual worlds as a teenager. She’s worked on multiplayer web games (Sissyfight 2000), casual downloadable games (Miss Management), Flash games for kids (LEGO Junkbot). and Facebook games (Dreamland) while working with companies like Gamelab, LEGO, Rebel Monkey, and Fresh Planet. Naomi has also taught classes and workshops at Parsons School of Design, the NYU Game Center, and the New York Film Academy, and written game analysis�and feminist critique for Feministe. She is currently developing an independent game with the Brooklyn Game Ensemble.

Thoughtful discussion of game design

Although I have 3 published designs and have worked on dozens of other games, Anna Anthropy’s chapters made me feel like I know nothing about game design. In other words, it was challenging, which is a good thing. The latter part of the book, by Naomi Clark, was a little closer to my experience but still instructional.

Requiring Windows to do some of the exercises was a turn-off, especially since I was reading on an iPad.

Although there are some interesting points about game design brought up within; the unfocused and rambling examples of crude and simple games detracts from it's overall intent. I'm 4 chapters in and debating whether it's worth my time to continue reading it.

About the Author

Homeward Highway by Lewis B. Hunter follows the travels of Lester Eugene Oliver. The day his wife leaves him for another man propels Lester into an emotional dive. Never an extrovert, his pride suffers a hit below the belt, and he quickly realizes his life no longer appeals to him. Change is demanded, but he feels inadequate to determine what he should do. The day comes when he takes a step totally alien to him. He leaves everything behind, buys a Harley, and takes off with no particular destination planned. He just wants out! He wants to get rid of the awful empty feeling of unworthiness.

His journey leads him into various situations, some precarious and all amidst very colorful characters. Each one shows him a life that he could easily take on and those to avoid. What he learns along the way is that his life still has value, and he needs to determine where his trust should be given. He becomes more comfortable the further he travels, and eventually succumbs to a need to be back, to reconnect with his daughters at least.

Initially reading this story, I felt it was a book that only a male would enjoy. There are some segments where morals slide. However, the journey is not only for Lester to travel because the reader comes to know him too. Perhaps, like me, you will find him very likable and his inevitable choice of new friends is very acceptable. Lots of Southern charm, along with characters that would force anyone to make rapid decisions to keep their self-respect and values intact. A good story with some mature scenes and language.

Well written. Could be called The Journey of Self Discovery. The author knows motorcycles and touring. The people Leo meets along the way are mostly friendly and helpful, just like most of the people you meet on an actual tour. They are also interesting if you take the time like Leo did to listen to them.
I really liked the way the author described many of the roads that Leo traveled. I've been on many of them and the descriptions were accurate enough to bring back memories. The plot wasn't fantastic but it was believable and was low key overall with just enough excitement thrown in to keep things moving. Its easy to get into this book and just enjoy the ride.

I started out a little skeptical about the book because I have never rode a motor bike on a long trip. It became more interesting as each time I read greater lengths. Soon I became the character " Leo " and I could not put it down until I had finished the book. It was a great read that helped me understand some troubling parts of my life.

I found this to be a very enjoyable and enlightening book. The characters are easy to relate to, and the main character Leo quickly becomes someone you identify with as he takes a long look at his past. I enjoyed the way the author makes some very reflective insights into who we are and how we became the people we are. Those realizations are perfectly balanced with humor and humility in the nature of the main character and the friends he made as he found himself on the journey. This turned out to be far more than a book about a motorcycle journey. It was a journey into the adventure of discovering yourself and how to allow yourself to relax and make the most of your relationships with family and friends.

Mind your manners still applies

One might initially think that a book like this isn't needed. Looking around the business world shows it is, and for some should be required reading.

From tips like dining (BMW keeps your water in the right place!) to the obvious don't talk negative about the boss on social media, the lack of manners some professionals express is not professional.

As I read the copy I received from NetGalley, I thought of my peers in the agriculture world and thought overall we're a pretty good group of people. I've seen others in airports and travel situations that could use this book.

Looking and acting your best comes across in attitude. How we present ourselves goes beyond what we say. Common courtesy please and thank you make a difference, but this book goes beyond that. Working a room, ordering wine, handling detractors during presentations - it's covered here. The cell phone and headset advice should be required reading!

It's an easy read with action points throughout. Those who heed common courtesy get further because they find more doors open. Worth the money and time to read and implement.

The book has very short chapters for easy reading but everything being talked about seems too brief for my needs. Things being talked about in the book also seem very fragmented. I guess It may be suitable for people who already knew the essentials of business etiquette and just need a book as a reminder. I am glad that I also bought "Business Class" by Jacqueline Whitmore which has more details and explains everything very clearly.

Almost a must for today's social-economic challenging times.

Someone told me recently: reading about etiquette?, who cares, we’re in the casual times.

I said may be, but in my opinion, today’s business world is driven by decision makers, global players, policy makers, VIP enterprises, think-tanks and other key actors that do care. And I want my friends, colleagues, customers, members of family and of course myself to move so close as possible around that small segment. And to do so, you need to know the etiquette rules.

Written in a pleasant, sometimes humorous way, with clever and easy-to-implement tips. A broad experience of Ms. Barbara Pachter and her collaborator Denise Cowie backrounds the theory.
As an Ariadne'e thread, Ms. Prachter seeks along her book to cause the enthusiasm of the reader, the job seeker, the candidate for a promotion, etc., for learning the key factors on etiquette.
