Serious Play: How the World's Best Companies Simulate to Innovate, by Michael Schrage

Successful innovation demands more than a good strategic plan; it requires creative improvisation. Much of the "serious play" that leads to breakthrough innovations is increasingly linked to experiments with models, prototypes, and simulations. As digital technology makes prototyping more cost-effective, serious play will soon lie at the heart of all innovation strategies, influencing how businesses define themselves and their markets. Author Michael Schrage is one of today's most widely recognized experts on the relationship between technology and work. In Serious Play, Schrage argues that the real value in building models comes less from the help they offer with troubleshooting and problem solving than from the insights they reveal about the organization itself. Technological models can actually change us--improving the way we communicate, collaborate, learn, and innovate. With real-world examples and engaging anecdotes, Schrage shows how companies such as Disney, Microsoft, Boeing, IDEO, and DaimlerChrysler use serious play with modeling technologies to facilitate the collaborative interactions that lead to innovation. A user's guide included with the book helps readers apply many of the innovation practices profiled throughout. A landmark book by one of the most perceptive voices in the field of innovation.

Amazon.com Review
Recall the old saying about all work and no play making Jack a dull boy? World-class companies today need play--serious play--if they want to make truly innovative products, argues Michael Schrage, an MIT Media Lab fellow and Fortune magazine columnist. In Serious Play he writes, "When talented innovators innovate, you don't listen to the specs they quote. You look at the models they've created." Whether it's a spreadsheet that tests a new financial model or a foam prototype of a calculator, what interests Schrage is not the model itself, but the behavior that play--be it modeling, prototyping, or simulation--inspires.

Schrage examines the approaches to successful prototyping at companies such as AT&T, Boeing, Microsoft, and DaimlerChrysler and describes the kind of culture that's needed for encouraging innovation. In the last chapter, he lays out the 10 rules of serious play, including: Be willing to fail early and often; know when the costs outweigh the benefits; know who wins and who loses from an innovation; build a prototype that engages customers, vendors, and colleagues; create markets around prototypes; and simulate the customer experience. Well-written and inspiring, Serious Play, is a first-rate user's guide for managers, project leaders, and other innovators. --Dan Ring

From Booklist
At such firms as Walt Disney, Microsoft, 3M, Sony, and Hewlitt-Packard, serious play is serious work. Schrage, a research associate at MIT Media Lab and columnist for Fortune, sets out to explore "serious play," which he defines as creative improvisation in corporations. Serious play is taking place worldwide, and it uses such "toys" as models, simulations, and prototypes. With the development of sophisticated technology, the distinction among these three toys has blurred, and they all are used as an effort to recreate some aspect of reality that matters; their real value is the insight they provide an organization. The irony of innovation in any field, especially the most competitive, is that you can't be a serious innovator unless you are willing to play--which means seriously investing in the challenge of confronting the uncertainties that future markets will bring by rigorously questioning and revising the rules. This is a "must read" book. Mary Whaley

Review
In the late 1970s, a young Harvard Business School student figured there had to be a better way to crunch mergers-and-acquisitions numbers than manually recalculating them on printed ledger sheets. The grad student was Dan Bricklin, and his quest for a better way led to the creation of VisiCalc, the first electronic spreadsheet. Within five years, all Harvard MBA students used spreadsheet software.

Within a decade, low-cost spreadsheets had launched what Michael Schrage, author and codirector of the MIT Media Lab's eMarkets Initiative, calls "the largest and most significant experiment in rapid prototyping and simulation in the history of business." According to Schrage, it also helped kick off the personal-computer era, spawned the mergers-and-acquisitions boom of the late 1980s and made Michael Milken and legions of Wall Street analysts and traders rich.

Spreadsheets are one example of the simulations, prototypes and models that fill Schrage's newest work, Serious Play. Because spreadsheet software is so well known, Schrage devotes an entire chapter to it to illustrate his core idea: that a company dominates its industry when it designs prototypes quickly and frequently, and when it uses its innovations to continually transform itself and its relationships with customers and suppliers. Microsoft, Boeing, Royal Dutch/Shell, Disney and Netscape all are masters of what Schrage calls "rapid prototyping."

If you crack open Serious Play thinking you'll get a breezy read, you'll be disappointed. Schrage's writing is intellectually dense, though not impenetrable. He defines play as "improvising with the unanticipated in ways that create new value." Companies play when they run simulations to test what changing the shape of a widget will do to the weight of an automobile, or when they model what lowering the price of software will do to sales.

Schrage argues that while prototypes and simulations are valuable in supporting an organization's existing behaviors, they're more valuable when they turn up surprises. After airline industry deregulation, for example, NASA investigated pilot fatigue. Instead of finding that well-rested pilots flew better, researchers were surprised by simulations that showed pilots who'd worked together several shifts in a row responded better under stressful flight conditions than fresh crews.

Prototypes aren't immune to failure. Companies can shoot themselves in the foot by creating elaborate prototypes then ignoring what they've learned. In a classic example from the late 1960s, Sun Oil built an incredibly sophisticated corporate financial model, but it was so complicated managers never used it. Even worse, companies that fail to question the underlying assumptions of their prototypes wind up with products no one will buy.

How does Schrage relate his theories to the Internet Economy? Unfortunately, he leaves it up to them to draw their own conclusions. However, it's not hard to see Schrage's culture of rapid prototyping happening all over the Web. The Web has become the world's biggest prototype laboratory, with companies slapping on features as quickly as possible to gauge consumer reaction, test revenue models and even figure out which business they should be in. [See Schrage's Jan. 31 column "(Serious) Playtime."]

It's also easy to see how the Web has led to what Schrage calls prototype "Christmas trees," products that designers keep adding features to because they can, not because customers want them.

Schrage closes with a few pointers that dot-com companies would be wise to follow, especially if they don't have cultures that support formal modeling or simulation. Before jumping into a project, understand who the beneficiaries of prototypes or models are: customers, the marketing department or the CEO? Don't be afraid to fail. Outline how prototypes will be integrated into commercial products. Above all, play. This is serious advice from a master on the subject. -- From The Industry Standard

Knowing your process performance is important
By James William Martin
I highly recommend this book to anyone including busy executives. It is a very interesting and non-technical discussion of why organizations should embrace process quantification. It's been said that if a person can quantify their judgments; then they know what they are talking about. Too many people make judgments about their systems without having any understanding of how they operate since they have not done a careful study of process variables, their transformative mechanisms and the system's outputs. This is true regardless if the type of system. The authors discuss how some major organizations use models and simulation to understand and improve their processes to create a deeper understanding of how they operate.

This book changed how I think about simulation
By Michael B.
This is one of the best books on simulation that I've read. Through many intriguing examples, Serious Play shows how simulation can accelerate and improve decision-making. The book explains how simulation can be a critical tool for strategic planning. Schrage frames simulation as an inclusive, primary business activity, instead of something exclusive, performed by experts in a back office.
I especially liked Schrage's recognition of spreadsheets as a simulation tool. In discussions on simulation, spreadsheets are usually ignored because they are seen as unsophisticated. Schrage shows how spreadsheet simulations made many of the financial innovations of the 80s and early 90s possible.
In addition to convincing readers that simulations are valuable, Schrage does a good job of introducing readers to how simulations can be implemented in business. The chapters near the end of the book on measuring the ROI of simulations and his brief user's guide provide some useful tools for those interested in using simulations and prototypes to improve decision-making.

Three years on, still a great book
By Andy Orrock
Here's the best review I can give Michael Schrage's "Serious Play": Three years on, it's consistently the first book I pull out of my bookshelf when I'm looking for ideas for presentations, thoughts on introducing new products or services, etc. His commentary on "mean-time-to-payback" is something that will stick with you for years. It's brilliant stuff, written in clear, concise terms. And, surprisingly, very little of it is dated. Unlike many books from that era, there's no .com or Enron fixation for the author to be embarrassed about. Schrage's examples are pulled from health care technology, animation, theater...in short, an eye-opening spectrum of ideas. I consider "Serious Play" one of my best purchases ever.

Nearly 90 percent of the earth's land surface is directly affected by human infrastructure and activities, yet less than 5 percent is legally "protected" for biodiversity conservation--and even most large protected areas have people living inside their boundaries. In all but a small fraction of the earth's land area, then, conservation and people must coexist. Conservation is a resource for all those who aim to reconcile biodiversity with human livelihoods. It traces the historical roots of modern conservation thought and practice, and explores current perspectives from evolutionary and community ecology, conservation biology, anthropology, political ecology, economics, and policy. The authors examine a suite of conservation strategies and perspectives from around the world, highlighting the most innovative and promising avenues for future efforts.

Exploring, highlighting, and bridging gaps between the social and natural sciences as applied in the practice of conservation, this book provides a broad, practically oriented view. It is essential reading for anyone involved in the conservation process--from academic conservation biology to the management of protected areas, rural livelihood development to poverty alleviation, and from community-based natural resource management to national and global policymaking.

Winner of the 2008 Gerald L. Young Book Award in Human Ecology

From the Inside Flap
"Balancing the rights of local people with the obligation to preserve viable ecosystems for future generations is the single most pressing challenge confronting global citizens in the twenty-first century. In this book, Borgerhoff Mulder and Coppolillo provide a lucid and admirably interdisciplinary synthesis of anthropological, biological, and economic perspectives essential to scientifically enlightened dialogue in this domain. Conservation: Linking Ecology, Economics, and Culture grew out of a pioneering course titled 'People and Conservation,' but this unique synthesis will be as helpful to policy makers and park managers as it will be to teachers and students interested in conservation biology and anthropology. It is a book that deserves to be widely adopted."--Sarah B. Hrdy, author of Mother Nature: A History of Mothers, Infants, and Natural Selection

"This is an excellent and much needed book that finally brings together the social and anthropogenic insights needed to push conservation biology to a higher and more pragmatic level. I was hooked from the preface on, and found interesting and thoughtful ideas throughout."--Andrew P. Dobson, Princeton University

"This is an extremely interesting, well-written, wide-ranging, and very timely book. It covers a vast range of literature at the crucial yet rarely synthesized interface of biology and the social sciences, and should be very widely read. It is particularly helpful in the way it sets out the background to key debates, clearing up often-confused terminology and muddled concepts."--Andrew Balmford, University of Cambridge

"This book clearly and expertly elucidates the fact that the lessons from previous mistakes and successes in the relatively young field of conservation biology can point the way toward a more systematic, more comprehensive, and more socially acceptable approach when dealing with present and future conservation endeavors. It will be of great value to anyone sincerely interested in how humans can live with wildlife and wild places, and to professionals who seek answers to the difficult questions regarding how to go about conservation."--Alan Rabinowitz, Wildlife Conservation Society

"This book offers an astonishingly diverse, unprecedented compilation of information on efforts to balance biodiversity conservation with local development. Bridging a range of disciplines, the authors move fluidly from the history of U.S. environmentalism to contemporary efforts across the globe, from international treaties on climate change to case studies of indigenous management. This book belongs on the core reading list for university programs on conservation biology, sustainable development, and international environmental affairs."--Lisa Naughton, University of Wisconsin, Madison

This was a required text for an environmental anthropology class I attended last semester at BSU. If you're looking for a single place to get brought up to speed on conservation practices and/or environmental issues on a macro level, this book is for you. Most of the information presented by Mulder and Coppolillo is straight forward and unbiased.

Excellent, well written, intelligent book
By M. L. Kramer
Two intriguing, conflicted, intelligent, independent people drawn together in circumstances not of their choosing, find in elements of their lives a way to communicate in some of the most intelligent dialogue written in this genre. The cover of this book does no justice to the complexities and nuances of the story line. I will keep this book to reread if only to pick up on some of the story, and dialogue nuances I missed in prior readings. I can heartily recommend this book. - BTW the elements of child molestation, abuse is handled very tastefully, as tasteful as possible and is not to be ignored - it has happened throughout history and to pretend otherwise is impossible - Jo Goodman has written an excellent book , one of the best I have read in a while.

Had some major problems (spoilers included)
By Beanbag Love
I had some real problems with the story of this book. It wasn't that I didn't like the leads. They were fine and the story started out well, but as more details were added and added and added, it became an exercise in shock fiction.

One of my main complaints is that I don't understand why true villains get off without any punishment. That's been a theme for a while in many novels I've read. The hero and heroine's 'compassion' lets them send the villains off to another country or to live a life in poverty or some other such mild punishment. Presumably this is supposed to stop the criminal behavior. Not likely.

Does Ms. Goodman expect us to believe that Olivia's father stopped going to that convent to hook up with little girls when Olivia left? That he's not still visiting the convent school to exercise his perversions? Not only does her father go off to his life after having abused her as a child, but also after assaulting her in the office of the man who supposedly loves her, and the convent school is forgotten by the end of the book. Griffin and Olivia are not interested in what most likely continues to happen to the little girls sent there?

And does she expect us to believe that Olivia is the only person Mr. Burton tried to rape? Mr. Burton is left to his own devices at the end. Alastair's shots went astray and we're supposed to be happy about it. The reality is that Olivia was probably the only woman who escaped Mr. Burton.

And as for the dark topic, I felt Olivia's ardor with Griffin was also a bit hard to believe after what she'd suffered as a child and even as an adult. It seems her harrowing background was more an effort to create drama and, although it was realistically presented, the longer term effects of such trauma were virtually ignored, which made it all seem like a gimmick rather than a well considered plot line.

SPOILER END

This is my first Jo Goodman book and I bought it because a friend recommended her as an author. I don't think I can go for a second try after this one, unfortunately. If there's anyone out there who agrees with my problems on this one and can recommend one of Goodman's stories without this sort of prurient exploitation of real and horrifying issues, I'd be happy to change my mind. I just won't go in blind again.

I can't recommend this book. I only give it two stars because she's got considerable talent as a writer and I did like the leads. Otherwise it would have gotten one.

A Dark But Very Good Book
By Amazon Customer
The Price of Desire revolves around Olivia Cole and Griffin Wright-Jones. Griffin owns a hell where Olivia's brother, Anthony, has wracked up an enormous debt. When Griffin demands collateral until Anthony can pay the debt, Anthony is forced to give him a family heirloom. Through Anthony's selfishness and scheming Olivia ends up being given to Griffin as a marker. What follows is a journey of Olivia discovering her self-worth and learning how to trust someone.

It's always easier for me to be specific about the things that didn't work for me than the things that made me love a book. Bear with me as I try.

What I love about Jo Goodman's writing is the lyrical quality of the prose. As I read, the flow of the sentences takes on a cadence in my mind and pulls me through chapter after chapter. I find this is especially true in the way she writes dialogue. It has a certain rhythm that makes the pages turn quickly for me.

I'm definitely not an expert in any period of history, so I can't speak with any authority on how authentic everything was. However, I can certainly give my opinion as to how it felt for this reader. Everything felt authentic, especially how the characters spoke. The way they expressed themselves and the way they phrased things felt very antique. I don't mean that in a bad way, it was definitely a plus for me. There was never a moment where I stopped because something seemed weird about how the period was described. That happens to me sometimes. I feel compelled to google a fact because it seems so out of place.

Sometimes in a Romance book I either love the heroine or I love the hero. It rarely happens that I love both. I may like both, but I really only love one. That was not the case here. The way Olivia and Griffin were written made both of them strike a cord in me. I ended up feeling for both and enjoying them equally.

Olivia was such a mix of strength and vulnerability. I loved that about her. She was strong, but it was a quiet strength. She was very levelheaded and thought before she acted. Olivia was very self-contained. There were never any outbursts to give the reader or the characters in the book an obvious indication of how she felt. Because of that the reader and the characters are obliged to watch her and hope for more clues to figure out who she is as a person.

Griffin was more up front than Olivia, so it was easier to see who he was and what his motivations were. I didn't really enjoy his history with marriage, but I certainly understood it. I empathized with his circumstances and found his attitude toward them refreshing. Any character that has had a negative experience that impacted them but doesn't "woe is me" about it automatically earns points with me.

I didn't really enjoy the first love scene between Olivia and Griffin. It actually made me faintly uncomfortable. Having said that, I think the way it was done was spot on in regards to the characters. It gave me a lot of insight into Olivia and Griffin. I appreciate when a love scene actually shows me more about the inner workings of the characters. I enjoyed watching their relationship mature and how they grew together.

I didn't like how things were resolved with Elaine. That was the only part of the book that felt like it took the easy way out. I did however like the situation she left with Griffin. I was interested in what he would choose to do in regards to Nat. That's a hard situation to be in and I can honestly say I have no idea which way I would have gone on it.

I found the resolution, or the lack or resolution, with Olivia's family to be realistic. While I, living in the time I do, may think it is unfair and heinous things should be done to right the wrong, that wouldn't fit here. There isn't always a horrible future for villainous people. Sometimes there is no justice. I also like that Anthony stayed the same immature, selfish person throughout the book. I was glad that Olivia actually acknowledged his faults and learned she really couldn't depend on him. Too often the selfish family member suddenly reforms toward the end of the book for no discernable reason. It's very irritating.

This is a quiet book. We're never given info dumps or shown the character thinking very obvious thoughts like, "I love her/him". Until things are resolved through the characters the reader will have to pay attention to the actions of the characters to gauge their true feelings. Also, this is a very dark book in some aspects. Some readers may be turned off by that, so be warned.

“Hot-Hands” and Casper have been dating for a month, but their relationship is about as smooth as shattered glass. It doesn't help that Hot-Hands is racked with guilt over his high school bullying of Casper, or that Casper darts away whenever his boyfriend gets a little too frisky.

Desperate to hang onto Casper, Hot-Hands tries to earn back the trust he destroyed years ago, so they can face their disastrous past and have a chance at a happy future.

Cold Hands focuses on high school bullying for being gay. This is the sequel to Hot Hands and contains big spoilers if read first. Hot Hands is free of charge.

Sweet and touching
By The Romance Reviews
For this entire series I've wanted more, more, more time with each couple. Well, now I have it!

COLD HANDS is a follow up the first in the series. This followed Casper and Jamie after their shaky HFN at the end of Hot Hands.

Jamie and Casper had known each other since middle school. Only problem was they hadn't been friends the entire time. More like enemies, as Casper was horribly bullied by Jamie throughout middle and most of high school. So when Casper discovered that Jamie has had a crush on him the entire time, it came as quite a shock.

Casper still wasn't quite able to forget all the torment Jamie put him through during their school years. He's with Jamie, but didn't quite believe it and was kind of waiting for the other shoe to drop. Which was great, as I don't think anyone would realistically forgive and forget that kind of torment so easily. I really enjoyed Casper's character and the strong man he'd become. He took the terrible way he was bullied and used it to make himself a better person.

Jamie, poor Jamie. I don't think anyone was more upset about his actions than he was. As much as Casper wasn't ready to forgive, neither was Jaime. He knew what he had done and was therefore very patient and understanding. He was willing to wait for Casper to be ready to move further in the relationship, or not. He was also okay with things staying the way they were, as long as he was able to be with Casper. It was all very sweet and touching and I loved every minute of it.

This was a great little glimpse into the lives of past characters and I was so excited when they were able to get a solid happily ever after. But I'm now feeling greedy and still want more with all the couples.

When the idea of a relationship becomes real...
By Cole Riann
Hot Hands was by far my favorite story in Erica Pike's College Fun and Gay series, so you can imagine my excitement when she said that she was writing a sequel. Cold Hands is almost as much of an antithesis to that first story as it's title. Hot Hands introduces us to Casper -- a college student who was brutally bullied, more like abused, in high school for being gay -- and his ex-bully and middle school crush Jaime. Casper shows up to college and is surprised and devastated to learn that one of the ring leaders of the guys who tormented him is not only there but also in some of his classes. He does everything he can to avoid Jaime, but doesn't know that a lot of Jaime's bullying stemmed from his own awakening homosexual feelings towards Cass. His physical and emotional abuse for most of his teen years have really impacted him. He's shy and doesn't understand why he's still attracted to one of the men who abused him, which also messes with his head. His attachments soon turn to another man, however, a man he starts to call "Hot-Hands" because of the way the man's hands draw him out and make him feel sexy and interesting whenever he's accosted by this same hard-breathing man in the dark. It's a serious case of having a secret admirer, but Casper has his suspicions and soon finds them proven wrong. All that time, Casper had inadvertently been giving himself up to the man who caused him so much pain and now he's more confused than ever.

Cold Hands resumes this story from Jaime's point of view, which is a serious change in how we understand the story. Cass is a thinker who constantly analyzes his feelings and thoughts, but because of their unique relationship he knows very little about what Jaime really thinks and Jaime's motives. The change in point of view starts this sequel off on a different foot. We immediately see that Jaime has real regret about the way he treated Cass in the past and that his feelings now are genuine, and also that he's a different man now. He understands himself and has grow up in the two years they spend apart. Now, he's out of the closet and over the shame that he grew up with from a conservative family and town. Still, Cass doesn't know that. He's still confused about Jaime's motives and his own. How can he trust himself and his feelings if he's seriously considering having a relationship with his abuser?

The real difference between the first story and the second isn't the point of view, but in the focus of their relationship. If you look at these stories together as one, then this story is the payoff. The first was the setup, the background and the premise -- the meetings in the dark with Casper's "secret admirer" and the subsequent reveal of his real identity -- but, Cold Hands is the meat and bones of their relationship. This story carries on to peel back the layers and find out if these guys have a solid base to build any relationship upon and how they go about doing that. The change in point of view facilitates that because by nature of their relationship as abuser/victim, Jaime automatically sees the bigger picture than Cass. Casper is still mired in confusion about his feelings and dealing with understanding Jaime and his actions and in evidence of how that abuse affected him, he's battling his own self-esteem.

I'm so glad that Erica decided to continue their story because I think that it is only in retrospect that this story feels as if it completed the first. Cold Hands makes the whole story better by giving us a chance to see them work through the consequences of their actions in the first story, and that in turn gives them the HEA they deserve. This also shows in the sex in both stories. So much of the first story takes place while Casper thinks "Hot-Hands" is someone else entirely that a lot of those scenes were exploratory, sexy and hot in a situational way, playing on the mysterious suitor with a dirty and exhibitionist twist. I read that story as a really good piece of erotica with an engaging plot. This story moves their physical relationship into a place of intimacy, so much so that it's often too difficult for Casper to really handle.

I definitely recommend these stories to all of you, though you absolutely have to read Hot Hands first. Well done Erica and thank you for writing this story so I could spend more time with Cass and Jaime!

Some Great Exercises
By Matt Rodriguez
I know that this book is written for clinicians, however, we are a military family and I figured this would be a good resource for us (and some of our military friends!). It is very easy to use-the book is broken down into talking points, activities, and homework handouts! It really talks about discussing sensitive issues of deployment in such a way that increases a sense of closeness and intimacy so often lacking or lost during a lengthy, stressful, and even frightening deployment! Overall, I really enjoyed it and will be recommending it to all our military friends! It's nice to have tools to specifically deal with my family's unique (but not so unique) situation of serving our country while raising a cohesive and loving family!

Should be given to every military family
By Radar626
After being a military spouse for 16 years, I didn't think that I would find much helpful information in this book. I've been through several deployments, the tension of 9/11, tearful goodbyes and stressful reunions. After reading this book, I wish that I would have been given this as mandatory reading when I first became a military spouse.

Military service is truly a different way of life. The active duty spouse gets weeks of basic training to know what is expected of him/her during their career. They are told whom to contact depending on the situation. The'/re given a clear cut way to seek answers, deal with issues, and address problems. Military spouses? Well, sometimes we are just thrown into the deep end without any arm floaties and told to swim. There are some ways to find help and answers, but this workbook amazed me at how well it addressed areas that are often not addressed and, depending on where you are stationed, considered taboo.

I truly wish that I had been able to purchase this book 16 years ago. The military mindset is often "We don't need any help with our problem(s)." Even with the military, people do not talk about the darker side of the joyous reunions seen on television. No one talks about the stress the family goes through while the serviceman/woman is deployed, or about the tense weeks following their return from fighting. We are offered basic guidance in things such as finance or how to put together a resume, but when it comes to dealing with family issues, there's not much more than a pamphlet and a phone number to call for three counseling sessions. We are not offered help in dealing with the nightmares, the personality changes, or how to help them process the horrible things they saw. Seeking the services of a mental health professional is, sadly, often refused because the service person is afraid of it hurting their career and/or job status. There's a reason why the divorce rate and instances of various forms of abuse in the military community are high.

"Healing Stress in Military Families: Eight Steps to Wellness" is a step-by-step guidebook and workbook that gives families the tools to work through the difficult times. The authors address the issues faced during difficult reunions and reintegration into a whole family unit. Stress, PTSD, angry outbursts, and even intimacy issues are also addressed in this book. There is also a resource guide in the back for further help or information.

The summary on Amazon makes it seem like a book geared towards mental health professionals and not families, but do not let that make you hesitate in purchasing this book. The workbook sections are invaluable, though I wish they had additional copies so that each spouse could fill out the page (or older children). Various scenarios are presented throughout the book that help illustrate how each informational section might be approached and applied to each reader's particular situation. The overwhelming feeling I got when going through this book was that I'm not alone in what I am/have go/gone through. And believe me, that's what it often feels like.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone married/dating a military member - no matter how long they have been together. I plan on showing this book to the base Family Support Center in the hopes that they may order dozens of these books, or to possibly start a group based on the book to provide support. Healing Stress in Military Families: Eight Steps to Wellness would also make a wonderful tool for families of wounded warriors.

Seems like this would be a helpful resource.
By Eric B. Borgman
Healing Stress in Military Families: Eight Steps to Wellness by Lorie T. DeCarvalho and Julia M. Whealin does seem like it could be helpful and useful resource to clinicians and military families alike.

There is a lot of reading to do and there are many exercises to be filled out and handouts and homework. Because I am not a member of the military I can only evaluate this book as a non-military member. I do think that it could be of use and help to military families and soldiers.

MORE THAN 100,000 COPIES SOLD

One small idea can ignite a revolution just as a single matchstick can start a fire.

One such idea—putting employees first and customers second—sparked a revolution at HCL Technologies, the IT services giant.

In this candid and personal account, Vineet Nayar—HCLT’s celebrated CEO—recounts how he defied the conventional wisdom that companies must put customers first, then turned the hierarchical pyramid upside down by making management accountable to the employees, and not the other way around.

By doing so, Nayar fired the imagination of both employees and customers and set HCLT on a journey of transformation that has made it one of the fastest-growing and profitable global IT services companies and, according to BusinessWeek, one of the twenty most influential companies in the world.
Chapter by chapter, Nayar recounts the exciting journey of how he and his team implemented the employee first philosophy by:

• Creating a sense of urgency by enabling the employees to see the truth of the company’s current state as well as feel the “romance” of its possible future state

• Creating a culture of trust by pushing the envelope of transparency in communication and information sharing

• Inverting the organizational hierarchy by making the management and the enabling functions accountable to the employee in the value zone

• Unlocking the potential of the employees by fostering an entrepreneurial mind-set, decentralizing decision making, and transferring the ownership of “change” to the employee in the value zone

Refreshingly honest and practical, this book offers valuable insights for managers seeking to realize their aspirations to grow faster and become self-propelled engines of change.

A simple, powerful idea
By Silea
Anyone who's ever been underpaid and undervalued by management can tell you how much harder they would have worked, how much better their work would have been, and how much more satisfied they would have been in their job if their bosses had made any efforts to respect their contributions. This is part of the basic premise of Employees First, Customers second. In short: if you treat your employees well and support them, they do better work and keep your customers happy. When you treat the people at the bottom of the pyramid like interchangeable parts, but they're the ones interacting with your customers, your customers are going to see it and your relationships with customers are going to suffer.

Mr. Nayar's book has several suggestions that apparently worked well for his company, and look great on paper: Realize that your customer-facing employees are far more important than their pay grade indicates, Increase transparency, Admit when times are tough instead of denying the elephant in the room, Make management and service departments accountable to employees. He gives examples of how his company did these things, and most of those methods seem fairly portable. In all, i'd love to work at a company that even tried to do these things, and i'd love to work with companies that respected their employees by putting them first.

I have a two complaints, one substantive and one superficial.

First, the substantive: repeatedly through the course of the book, Mr. Nayar says something to the effect of 'we had many successes, and many failures.' He never once describes a failure, an initiative that flopped, a new policy that did more harm than good. All we see is the raging successes. For an executive trying to reform their company, knowing what worked for Mr. Nayar's firm will be very helpful, but not as helpful as knowing that and what looked like it should work but ended up being a disaster. Mr. Nayar touts transparency, but gave a very self-servingly opaque account of his efforts and results.

Second, the superficial: This book is written by someone who speaks the Indian dialect of English, not the American. Sentence structure, paragraph structure, and word choice are all a little unusual to American eyes. It doesn't interfere with comprehension, but it does take a little bit of habituation.

nothing new
By Just Me
Decent, but nothing new. Poorly written. Not much meat here, unless you want to know the details (that is, facts) of the author's company (HCL Technologies); unfortunately, there are a lot of dry facts (we had X% of the market; our growth was Y%; etc.). Just not a lot of useful info here. The author references other books, such as The Trusted Advisor and The Starfish and the Spider: The Unstoppable Power of Leaderless Organizations, and I recommend that you just go straight to those books instead.

Not What I Expected
By Warren Holzem
What business owner wants to say to the world, "I don't put my customers first." But as established in the introduction, even before author Vineet Nayar tells the story of his company's transformation, an employee with a valuable skill set is an asset that's often harder to replace than some customer, especially in a field like information technology.

But this book isn't about theory. It's a case study told in first person. It's an interesting story, but there's not much of an attempt to illustrate how the concepts that worked for Mr. Nayar can work in other situations, too.

As others have pointed out, Mr. Nayar talks about his successes, but only alludes to his failures. That's understandable. We want to understand our failures, but not ncecessarily expose our weaknesses to the world. But it also gave the story of his company's transformation a one-dimensional quality.

I really was hoping for me. I was hoping not for just one company's experience, but some guidence on how a concept can be applied to other companies in other situations as well. I was over half done with the book before I realized that I wasn't going to find that if I just turned one more page.
