Good stories, but not enough! Only 3-4 short tales, lots of typos. Next time actually proofread. Spell check on tells you words are spelled correctly, not that they are the right words!

3.5 rounded up to 4 stars. I'm a huge River Song fan. After listening to the magic that was the audio dramas by Big Finish I decided to check out this book. Unfortunately these authors didn't exactly capture River in the way that we know her. I wouldn't say any of the stories were bad but they all just missed the mark on nailing River's attitude and poise. The stories were still enjoyable and well written.

She's bringing Sexy back

Consisting of five short stories (about 50 pages each give or take), with just two of the stories featuring Mat Smith’s incarnation of the Doctor, & all from the perspective of River.
So what I think makes this new Doc Who novel a little different, is that River has always been a little subversive, never seeing anything wrong is breaking the law is if doesn’t hurt anybody who hasn’t got it coming, which gives the stories a interesting shade of grey instead of the usually whiter that white.
The only down side is the briefness of the stories (they just seem to get going when it’s all over), but still a thoroughly enjoyable romp.

This book was a great help in getting me off the hook for a 22349(a), Maximum Speed Law charge. I used a combination of this book and boilerplate freely available online to serve the prosecuting attorney with Informal Discovery.

In my case, the City Attorney (San Diego) was the prosecuting attorney and they failed to respond to my discovery request within the 20 days required by Penal Code Section 1054. I got a letter from the City Attorney on the DAY OF the trial, the afternoon after the court proceedings where I was able to successfully get the court the continue the case and require the prosecution to respond. I was instructed by the court to send them my discovery request again, serve them with moving papers and a copy of the court's Minute Orders indicating that the City Attorney had a deadline to respond 1 week before the new trial date. They sent nothing.

Went back to court today armed to get the case dismissed on procedural grounds alone, but also prepared to argue the facts and law surrounding the case from the other chapters. The court reviewed my Notice of Motion (at great lengths), checked out my Proof of Service and USPS Return Receipt and concluded that the City Attorney had clearly received my first Informal Discovery request evidenced by their tardy response, that they had now had 2 opportunities and ample time to respond ( "Two bites at the apple" as the judge put it) and had also ignored the court's response deadline. I have a feeling the judge was looking for a reason to still get the case to trial, but had to dismiss the case in the interest of justice because I was denied due process by the prosecution.

There will be things outside of this book that will come up. In my case, the court wouldn't set the hearing before the trial date for my motion to compel, so I had to make it on the day of the trial. The book also instructs you when making notice of motions to file them with the court and have your copies file-stamped to indicate that the originals are with the court. The business office at my court refused to file the originals and file stamp my copies and insisted that I drop it off in their mailbox to have to sent "downtown" (which serves no purpose for the court hearing the case). Yet, the judge asked me if I had filed the notice with the court and I had to explain that the business office refused to accept it. The court also made copies of the officers notes, front and back for me during the first appearance before the judge instead of requiring that the City Attorney provide them (I also asked for a list of witnesses for the prosecution and speedometer calibration records). Instead of needing to utilizing the order templates to compel the City Attorney to respond, the court used their minute orders to indicate their desires to the prosecution.

Basically, the court will likely diverge slightly from how the book said things are done and the leeway given to the defense and prosecution will be largely at the Judge's discretion. The book also suggests attempting to get the court to assess monetary sanctions for failure to provide discovery. In my case, the judge wouldn't have any of it and indicated that my dismissal was the appropriate enough sanction.

There's a lot of work to follow the book, but I think once you've done it once you can fight any tickets you get from that point forward shooting from the hip.

You can spiral bind it yourself..

I understand everyone's frustration about it not being spiral bound. However, and I know this costs slightly more money for something that should have been thought of before it was mass produced, you can get it spiraled at a place like Office Max for less than $10. They will slightly shave off the binding and spiral it for you, making it actually functional for it's purpose. Just thought I should share this :).

An initial review of the DSM-5 Desk Reference

I am a Licensed Alcohol/Drug Counselor and a Licensed Independent Mental Health Practitioner in Nebraska. While I have not examined the Desk Reference thoroughly yet, here are some initial observations.

1. My copy is not missing any pages

2. Both the ICD-9 and ICD-10 codes are included in the DSM-5. The ICD-10 codes are in parenthesis. This is helpful and means we do not have to buy a new book when the use of ICD-10 becomes mandatory October 1, 2014.

3. I wish the DSM-5 Desk Reference was spiral bound as it will not take long before the binding breaks down due to frequent use.

4. DSM-5 does away with the multiple axis system which I find very helpful, particularly, the elimination of Axis 5 which was very subjective.

5. DSM-5 makes stressors that were previously identified on Axis 4 into diagnosis which are identified as "V" codes in ICD-9 and "Z" codes in ICD-10. I find this troubling. For example, Homelessness is now a mental health diagnosis V60.0 (Z59.0) OR, probably my current favorite, Problem Related to Current Military Deployment Status V62.21 (Z56.82). Given that I am a civilian counselor in the Army Substance Abuse Program and I am currently stationed in S. Korea, I will be using this code a lot. Are both of these problems stressful? YES. Can both of these lead to further chemical use or exacerbate or sometimes lead to actual mental health issues? You better believe it! But to make them diagnosis in their own right is a travesty. It is not going to lead insurance companies to pay for treatment for Homelessness or Problem Related to Current Military Deployment Status now or in the future. If I remember correctly, even Medicaid does not pay for treatment of "V" codes. This is part of the issue that Senator Rand Paul, MD is talking about with Obama Care although these were not the diagnosis he was talking about.

6. DSM-5 does away with the diagnosis of Abuse vs Dependence when talking about Substance use. This is helpful because many times professionals, who treat people with Substance use issues, will have a patient (client) who may meet two criteria for Substance Dependence and no Substance Abuse criteria will not be treated unless the clinician uses the Not Otherwise Specified diagnosis which I have not seen used very often. DSM-5 merges the Abuse and Dependence criteria and identifies it as Substance Use Disorder (replace the word "Substance" with the actual chemical or group of chemicals, thus Alcohol Use Disorder or Cannabis Use Disorder, etc.). There are specifiers (Mild, Moderate, and Sever) that relate to the number of criteria met when making the diagnosis. The diagnosis will not be given unless the patient (client) meets two criteria which is an improvement over the meeting a single criteria for Abuse in DSM-IV-TR.

7. DSM-5 has also changed some wording in the diagnosing of a Substance Use Disorder. The DSM-IV-TR diagnosis of either Substance Abuse or Dependence indicated a repeat of the problem which was difficult because it lead to premature diagnosis of a problem particularly in young adults and adolescents. Many people need to make a choice that leads to bad consequences more than twice before they recognize the problem. In other words, they had to learn that a particular behavior leads to a specific outcome by making the choice several times and experiencing the consequence several times. This is true of all learning no matter if the consequence is positive or negative. The DSM-5 rectifies this problem by saying, "A problematic pattern of ____ use leading to clinically significant impairment or distress, as manifested by at least two of the following, occurring within a 12-month period: . . .". This gives clinicians the ability to look for a pattern instead of just two incidences.

8. The one criteria that is still problematic is tolerance. The tolerance may take more than 12-months to occur as, for most people, there is no distinct easily identifiable change in a given 12 month period. Rather tolerance is a gradual thing so that significant change, particularly increase, does not occur within 12 months but over years. It would have been useful for the committee who worked on this section would have added a note to this criteria saying that the Tolerance criteria is met even if it took a number of years for significant tolerance to occur.

9. The addition of Cravings as a criteria for the diagnosis Substance Use Disorder is very helpful. As is the recognition that a patient (client) may still be in remission even if the patient (client) is having Cravings.

10. Changing the time when a patient (client) enters early remission from 1 month to 3 months seems realistic. Many patients (clients) can refrain from partaking of their chemical for a month or a little more but find they struggle with refraining from using for longer than that.

11. It would have been helpful if the page numbers for problems induced by a given substance, such as Alcohol-Induced Sleep Disorder, Cannabis-Induced Psychotic Disorder, or Hallucinogen-Induced Bipolar Disorder, etc., were identified instead of just being mentioned and the section Of the DSM-5 they can be found in.

12. I applaud the addition of Cannabis Withdrawal. Clinicians have been aware that patients (clients) experience withdrawal symptoms from Cannabis but it was not included in the criteria until the DSM-5.

13. There are changes in the way the DSM-5 groups some of the substances but this is relatively minor.

14. The overall heading of the section is Substance Related and Addictive Disorders thus Gambling Disorder is included in the same section. This actually is realistic to a certain extent but many clinicians who are trained to work with Substance Use Disorders are not trained to work with Gambling Disorders.

I know I mostly focused on the Substance Related and Addictive Disorders section of DSM-5 and I know that there are many concerns with the manual but I hoped this review helped at least a little. I am not giving it a 5 star rating due to the issues I noted above but there have been what I consider improvements in the manual particularly in the Substance Use area.

Quit Whining!

Mental Health Providers can be such whiners!
I really do not see the point of all the negative comments about the DSM-5 on an Amazon Review.
Not the place for that!
I am a Psychotherapist and I need this book, specifically the Desk Reference to be able to do my job.
I recently attended a Pesi Training on the DSM-5 and realize no one cares whether I like this book or not.
Things are about to change and I will need this book as a tool for my craft. So, I purchased the desk reference at Amazon. I was aware from other reviews that it is not spiral bound like the DSM-IV was, so I took it to the print shop down the street from my office and they cut off the binding and spiral bound it for me for five bucks. I now have a usable version of the language manual of my profession. It looks just like my trusty old grey desk reference. All that is left is to study it, stick some tabs in it, make notes in the columns and find out when the payers expect me to start using it. Simple enough?...We'll see.

About the Author

What is the opposite of fate? Self knowledge?

I was privileged to receive an advance reader's copy of this latest book by Amy Tan. In her novels, Tan uses material culled from her own life and her family's history. But I believe this is her first nonfiction book, and in it she displays the same qualities for which her fiction is so appreciated: humor, poignancy, revelation, a little magic - and always fascination with the world and our relationships within it. In The Opposite of Fate, she reveals herself. Especially moving is a part in which she realizes she only learned who her mother really was as she was writing her obituary. A collection of "musings," more than a chronological memoir, The Opposite of fate is intimate, literary, and wonderful.

Amy Tan in her own voice

"The Opposite of Fate" is a collection of musings that cover the many facets of Amy Tan's life, career, and philosophies. The book runs the gamut from a library contest entry written when she was eight to articles and lectures about her current life as a writer. These essays are quite personal, honest, and told with humor and amazing insight.
Tan reminisces on her childhood and the clash of Chinese fate and Christian faith in her upbringing. She provides many details about her family, especially her relationship with her mother. She also talks about the loss of both her father and brother to brain cancer the same year, as well as the deaths of several close friends. She describes her harrowing experience with Lyme's disease. She talks with amusement about doctoral dissertations and Cliff's Notes that analyze her work. She discusses what it means to be classified as an Asian-American writer, and how it feels to be a literary celebrity. She recounts her experiences in the literary rock band "The Rock Bottom Remainders."
I listened to the audio version of this book, which was read by Amy Tan herself. Since this collection let me peek into the author's triumphs, tragedies, hopes, and fears, it was very effective to hear the essays read in her own voice. After reading this book, you will better understand the elements that make up the author's stories, such as the echoes of her mother's influence in the novels' mother-daughter relationships. I recommend this book for every Amy Tan fan. It may provide enough insight on the real Amy Tan so that you'll want to reread some of her novels.

The Opposite of Fiction

Although I read only the occasional novel, I really love it when a novelist tries her hand at non-fiction. Fiction writers turn everything into stories. The essays and memories in The Opposite of Fate read like short stories, with the pacing and structure of fiction.

This is not a memoir, rather a collection of thoughts, essays, interviews, memories, even a prize-winning essay Amy Tan wrote when she was eight years old. The pieces at the beginning of the book are more light-hearted than the later ones. In one, Tan is surprised to find that Joy Luck Club has a CliffNotes version and is interested to discover what she was trying to say in her novel. Not only that, the CliffNotes biography doesn't quite match what she recalls from her own life. In another chapter, Tan tells how she became a bad singer in the Rock Bottom Remainders, a bad band. Her story of how Joy Luck Club was made into a movie is fascinating.

There is a lot about Tan's mother, a huge influence in her life, both good and bad. When Tan turns serious, watch out. She has had several brushes with death, and her September 11 memories are out of the ordinary, as well. She also writes about how she came to be a writer and have her first novel published at thirty-seven.

Most of these pieces are quickly read, and only one or two seem seemed too long. I am embarrassed to say that I have not read the novels of Amy Tan, but having finished this very enjoyable "Book of Musings," I look forward to getting her other books right away.

After becoming a siren 80 years ago, she is still unable to subdue the disgust and shame she feels while taking innocent lives in order to feed the Ocean. The Ocean is a motherly being who feeds off lives that drown in her waters. Sirens are the few young women whose lives she saves from death in order to keep her fed. Ocean cares intensely for Kahlen. However, when the protagonist falls in love with Akinli, a human boy, her responsibility to care for her sisters (also sirens) and the Ocean becomes a complicated task. Her sisters, along with the Ocean, watch her soul and body deteriorate the longer she is away from Akinli, who appreciates the true Kahlen, aside from her beauty and silence. Overall, the heroine is a meek character, but her muddled past, thoughts, and actions make her slightly interesting. Teens will appreciate her passion for her relationships—whether romantic or sisterly. Secondary characters aren't as intriguing or fully developed. Despite these shortcomings, the novel is fairly well written and offers a twist on Hans Christian Andersen's "The Little Mermaid" that romance fans will enjoy. Simply wonderful.

Wow. Oh, wow. Do NOT, I repeat, do NOT, start reading this book unless you have nothing else to do that day. Because you WILL read it in one sitting. You WILL skip meals. You WILL shun all human interaction. You WILL stay up all night, desperate to know how it ends. And you definitely will have puffy eyes the next morning. The writing is beautiful, the imagery is fantastic, and the romance is breathtaking. A must-read.

A Pleasantly Surprising Read

Imagine a world where you're granted a second chance at life, but forced to give up everything you love? That is the story of Kahlen, our beautiful heroine in the new book, THE SIREN by Kiera Cass. When approached to read this one, I was admittedly a little nervous because I hadn't heard anything about the book; nothing good, nor bad. I agreed to take the book on and as some other books I have had the fortune of being presented with, am quite glad that I did. THE SIREN was refreshing, haunting and beautiful all wrapped up into one beautiful little package.

Kahlen is a loving, dark haired beauty. When life takes a disastrous turn and she's faced with the decision of death versus a century of servitude, she chooses the option that will allow her to continue living. Years later she'll question that decision, wondering if her "life" now is worth the nightmares that she must face. Kahlen is a siren. Along with her sisters, she answers to the Ocean and helps to lure unsuspecting victims to their watery deaths with her voice of liquid gold and looks to match. Being kind and good natured at heart, Kahlen has a difficult time with the actions that she must perform in order to gain a second chance at life. Her journey, from the very beginning, makes for quite the fascinating read and, at least to me, makes THE SIREN wonderful and unique.

THE SIREN is actually a Young Adult novel although many of the characters in the book are above the Young Adult age. Cass does an amazing job of filling the story with just the right amount of details to satisfy any young adult reader while actually making for a great book for many adults as well. I personally find great enjoyment out of both Young Adult and Adult books, but I found that THE SIREN really seemed to satisfy both categories of books.

Part of THE SIREN follows Kahlen as she unravels the mysteries surrounding her new life and her feelings about it. Can she accept what she has become? Will she always harbor hate for the Ocean for what She has done to Kahlen or will she come to accept and give thanks for the gift she has been given? Cass creates an epic story here as we follow Kahlen through her ups and downs. By the end of the book, I feel that we the reader get to know the Ocean practically as well as Kahlen does. Her feelings, both positive and negative, pop off the page and swirl around, pulling us closer into the story.

While THE SIREN is great for anyone looking for a great drama or adventure read, it also satisfied those of us that like a touch of romance in our stories. Now, the romance doesn't really hit the surface until about halfway through the book, but when it does, oh boy hold on. Cass can write romance like nobody's business! She creates the perfect hero to go along with our lovely heroine. Akinli, a hard working fisherman by day and knight in shining armor by night, is a puzzle piece match to Kahlen. Cass's writing is such that, without being blatantly obvious about it, we can tell that Kahlen and Akinli are practically soul mates. While the first half of the book details Kahlen's life and struggle to understand herself, the romance between Kahlen and Akinli dominate the second half. It is this romance that really makes THE SIREN shine.

As I mentioned above, one of the best ways for me to describe THE SIREN is to say that it is haunting. I don't mean that there are literal ghosts floating around, rather there are ghosts of emotions still flitting about my head. THE SIREN is not always a happy book. There are times when it can be sad, frightening, and downright depressing. As Cass mentions in the story, it is the dark that makes the light shine even brighter. Without the sad parts, without the parts that leave you on the edge of your seat on the verge of tears, the love and hope in the story wouldn't flow through quite as nicely.

After pondering the review for a bit, I had to come back here and mention one final thing. I've mentioned that THE SIREN became one of those books that has stuck with me, constantly replaying through my head even though I finished the story. I think that a large reason for this is the amount of realism that Cass imbues the story with. The Ocean is a living, breathing entity. She speaks, she has feelings, she uses her great waves to cause things to happen. The Ocean is as much a character as Akinli, Kahlen or any of Kahlen's siren sisters. I hadn't realized this until after looking at some of the photos of Port Clyde, Maine on Cass's website. I saw a photo of the ocean and my first thought was that She really was alive! That's the strength of Cass's writing, allowing my brain to meander in the realm of the impossibility long after her words have ended.

I loved this book and would recommend it to anyone looking for a great Romance, a great Adventure, a great Drama, and/or a great Young Adult read. There were a few times, especially with the second half of the book, where the pace seemed to get a little choked up and quirky, but overall, the story flowed quite nicely. Cass's talent with the written word is obvious as is her wonderful imagination. She has created a story unlike one I have read before, incorporating both the light and the dark.

THE SIREN was a story of life and it was a pleasure to read. I'm looking forward to experiencing more of Kiera Cass's work. My only wish for THE SIREN was that it wouldn't end!

Stockholm Syndrome

I really love Kiera Cass and I wanted to love her new book. Sadly, I didn't. It is true that the characters have suffered severe trauma and that some memory loss would be expected. After a few chapters, though, the constant amnesia starts to feel less like the characters can't remember and more like the author just didn't want to finish that part of the story. The parts of the story that are finished are not very enjoyable. The characters suffer at the hands of an abuser who loves them. Of course that "love" is supposed to make everything acceptable. Even the quickly contrived happily ever after of the main character feels incomplete because of the ongoing abuse of the other characters.

So far I have purchased 24 books by Brian Johnston, Search for The Truth series, and have been enlightened by the way he explains the subjects to which he is writing and how they inspire me and leave me yearning for more. I suggest that you read all of his "Search for the Truth" series for a goog lesson in God's Word and for enlightened and enjoyable read.
