Joachim Grupp was born in Stuttgart in 1959 and has been practising Karate since 1976. He holds a 4th Dan in Shotokan Karate and he is the leader of a Karate Club in Berlin. His book "Shotokan Karate - Kihon-Kumite-Kata" has already been published successfully by Meyer & Meyer Sport.

Pretty good

Martial arts moves are dynamic and fluid. By their nature, photographs are a limited medium for teaching them, as they only show the endpoints of the moves and not the more important motions in between (for this reason, the creative illustrations such as in the Sugiyama book are much better for showing what photographs cannot). So whenever approaching a book on martial arts technique, one must always keep this limitation in mind.

As an adjunct to the process of learning in a dojo, this book succeeds fairly well. Each kata chapter includes not only photos of each move of the kata, but also photographs of how these moves would actually be used in combat. All too often the katas are taught in the abstract as a mere choregraphed exercise, divorced from any fighting context or practical application. The karate student is supposed to visualize an imaginary attacker while repetitively performing each kata, so having the extra photographs of the actual fighting application of the different moves is a valuable resource.

The introductory information (historical background, training tips, etc.) and the paragraphs that give insight into the nature of each kata are helpful and enlightening. My main dissatisfaction with this book, however, is that this material is poorly translated from the author's native language. It includes many tortured and nonsensical sentences such as: "The time spent on competitions, however, should lead from the finish of such a phase for the Karateka through to Karate-Do as an accompanying life-style." Huh?

This book shows pretty much all the katas from rookie to advanced. Shows many differant pictures and tells what some attacks or blocks are used for. Great book!

I had some other expectations to these two books. Shotokan Karate Kata Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 are nice to have, BUT don't thing of these books as source for learning Kata.

Solid, Accurate Transcriptions of Great Performances

Of course, I'm an amateur, so I can't play everything in the book as written. However, everything I've played (or read while listening to the music) is accurate, and includes notation for bends, palm key usage, etc.

There are about 20 or more songs in this collection. A few are from the Billie Holiday recordings. Many more are from "Complete Decca Recordings" of Count Basie and "The Complete Aladdin Recordings" of Lester Young. If you own these two collections, you will have the recordings of over half the songs in this book.

Fortunately I have recordings of most of these transcriptions and after multiple listenings I can attest to
the accuracy of the notations. This is a tenor player's dream book, not to copy Prez note for note, but to
actually see his brilliance as an improviser on paper.

He holds a Ph.D. degree in Mathematics from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and an MS degree in Computer Science from the University of Kentucky.� Introduction to the Design and Analysis of Algorithms has been translated into Chinese, Russian, Greek, and Korean and is used in hundreds of schools all over the world.� Dr. Levitin is also the author of Algorithmic Puzzles, publishing in Fall 2011.

Dr. Levitin teaches courses in the Design and Analysis of Algorithms at Villanova University.

Author made a mess trying to explain the algorithm concepts using the real world examples. No depth in material. Not a single algorithm is covered in depth. No clarity in explaining the concepts. Lots of inconsistencies !!

Solid, unique approach to algorithms

Levitin approaches this broad topic by focusing on design methods first, rather than application. After a brief introduction to efficiency analysis, he moves into elementary methods such as brute force, divide-and-conquer, etc. before broaching more difficult ideas like dynamic programming and greedy technique. In each chapter, most classes of problems that can be solved with the technique are at least mentioned, if not explained in some detail. As a beginner to computer science but having a good amount of programming experience, I was able to pick up the ideas from this book better than from my professor. Bear in mind that this book does not discuss implementation at all, but most algorithms are designed with a C-like or procedural style; you may want to follow up with a book more focused on OO design techniques if you are implementing with C++ or Java. As another reviewer mentioned, there are no solutions to the exercises, but I did find the hints helpful on a few occasions. The solution manual was provided to us by our instructor electronically. The only other complaint is the relatively high cost; this is not a book I plan to keep around for reference due to its limited scope. Nonetheless, as a solid introduction to the field, I found it to be indispensable in my algorithms course.
