About the Author
Rosa Brooks is a Senior Fellow at the New America Foundation, a columnist for Foreign Policy, and a law professor at Georgetown University. She previously worked at the Pentagon as Counselor to the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy; in 2011, she was awarded the Secretary of Defense Medal for Outstanding Public Service. Brooks has also served as a senior advisor at the US Department of State, a consultant for Human Rights Watch, and a weekly opinion columnist for the Los Angeles Times. Her articles and essays have appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, and dozens of other newspapers and magazines, and she is a frequent television guest, with appearances on the Charlie Rose Show, the Rachel Maddow Show, the Today show, Meet the Press, and Erin Burnett OutFront. Brooks lives in Alexandria, Virginia, with her husband Joe, her daughters Anna and Clara, and a Brittany spaniel named Scout.

Essential reading before the 2016 election

Rosa Brooks has written a cogent and succinct description of the process that has brought us into the legal morass where we are in a perpetual state of war in which the laws of war no longer apply. Of course, this summary doesn't do justice to the complexity of the book, and the book can't cover the entire landscape of the complicated intersections between the military and the civilian world, i.e. the issue of the militarization of domestic police forces. It does a superb job of setting the philosophical and legal framework for the question of the nature of war (and therefore also the nature of peace) and suggests that our natural human state includes conflict. A very basic social function is managing that conflict.
Brooks contends that in our current system, military and civilian leaders don't speak the same language. Misunderstandings are so profound that if we don't find a way to build common experiences and develop the same view of the world and the problems that confront us, we are unlikely to find the appropriate responses to build a sustainable future.

Read this book if you want to see America survive as a democracy!

This book should be mandatory reading for every American who cares about the direction the country is moving. It should be read by everybody in government and the military. It will scare the socks off of you, but at the same time it is a prescription for how to avoid having the military take over America whether intentionally or as a result of mission creep.

The author, Rosa Brooks, knows whereof she speaks. Originally from an anti-war background, she is a lawyer teaching at Georgetown law school who has worked in high-level positions in the State Department, in the Pentagon and has personally visited Afghanistan, Iraq, and many other hot spots around the globe. She has interviewed diplomats, generals and common soldiers.

Brooks' message is that war has changed since 9/11, that it now incorporates cyberspace, drones, nation-building and boots-on-the-ground. The military is gradually doing stuff that has been the province of the now-under-funded civilian agencies. Unfortunately, it's simply easier to let the military do it…easier but more dangerous to the health of our democracy.

Read it and get off the couch if you want to have America survive as a democracy.

Fact filled reality check about prolonged WARS.

Book is absolutely fascinating and informative. It is a reality check for all of USA who have lived thru these years of perpetual war. Brooks is so detailed and fact checked. Our soldiers are being used to fight for defense of country, rebuild nations destroyed by military and terrorist activities. They are in an untenable situation of having to use their own judgements as to whom is the combatant and who is not. Imagine, being the one firing the bullets that kill and maim children! Imagine being the ones who have to help clean up a drone hit hospital. PERPETUAL WAR has to be stopped. AM ppl are becoming so numbed to death of others, that our value system is in real jeopardy.

The terrorist's terrorist has arrived!

A terrific union of superb story-telling and sharp illustration, The Infidel Featuring Pigman is two stories in one. A cartoonist dealing with ideological adversaries and his creation, a pig-skinned superhero taking the jihad to the jihadis. To my knowledge, Fawstin is the only graphic novelist taking on jihadists. Even DC and Marvel, arguably the two standards in the industry, won't touch jihad. Highly recommended!

I don't usually purchase comic books but felt compelled to buy this one. I believe in freedom of speech and purchased this to tell those who follow Islam that I will not tolerate them imposing Sharia law on our cartoonists. We will draw Muhammad and we will criticise Islam and we will tell the truth about Islam. Terrorism will not win.Democracy, women's rights and free speech will triumph over the evil that is Sharia Law.

Tim Milne: Tim Milne was the nephew of Winnie the Pooh writer AA Milne, retired from SIS in October 1968 and never spoke publicly of his friendship with Kim Philby. He later wrote a full and frank account of his association. He died in 2010.

A Fascinating account

This is the only first-hand account I have ever read of Philby by a close friend, professional colleague and career intelligence officer and is excellently written. The account of Philby's time at Westminster and their travels together through central Europe during university holidays to me is absolutely fascinating as are the lengthy chapters on work and life in Section V of the SIS. While Milne does not excuse Philby's actions, he comes closer to providing reasons than anything else I've seen in print. Clearly, Philby was a person who inspired great loyalty and even admiration among his friends and colleagues in the British service, the writer Graham Greene being just one of these. For anyone interested in understanding Philby this is a great read as it's a true account; the other book I read recently is Ben Macintyre's book about Kim Philby's supposedly close friendship with Nicholas Elliott which I found full of factual errors and distortions. Elliott knew Philby for just over 20 years since they first met, according to Elliott's own autobiography, when the latter joined the SIS in late 1941 and indeed the first time they actually worked together was in Beirut when Elliott was meant to be running Philby as an Agent. Milne on the other hand knew Philby for nearly forty years and his book is the real thing

Kim Philby from a friend's view

This book is well written but doesn't really offer much in additional information on Britain's most infamous spy. If you know nothing of H. A. R. Philby it will mean little to you, if you do it offers modest entertainment. The author was the famous A. A. Milne's nephew and a career foreign service official. He knew Philby from school days at Westminster in London but they went to different universities.

The author strives for fairness while acknowledging Philby was a long time friend. It seems Milne never suspected the spy of working for the Russians but he had a large amount of company in that. One thing did puzzle me was MI6s forbidding the publication of the book in 1970. It was finally published posthumously by Milne's daughter and I cant see anything that would have harmed Great Britain's interests. I suspect the Secrets Act covers a lot of sins in that fine country.

Tim Milne knew Kim Philby better than most people, he remained a friend throughout their careers in the British Security Service. He takes us into the world of documenting, evaluating, assessing scraps of information gleaned by clandestine means from enemy sources. At this time this was the domain of intelligent "top people". This to outsiders was quaintly British, its members came from the best Public (USA private) schools, good colleges and well known families. This was the best "vetting" system. From childhood all were known and could be entrusted with top secrets. These people were tasked with discovering the plans and thoughts of the enemy by every means possible and to outwit and defeat them. Their work was an outstanding success but Britain has a long history of spying, going back hundreds of years. Kim Philby was accepted by the Security Service because he belonged, he was part of the club, he had all the credentials. Good family,well known Public School and Cambridge University. His other resume more ominous. He was also employed by Soviet Intelligence. . He was popular, to his friends constant and had a remarkable aptitude for his work for British Intelligence while maintaining his contacts with his other masters. In spite of the many books written about Philby the mystery remains. What attracted him to the Communist cause? He was at ease among his Establishment friends among whom were writers, journalists, politicians and he had an interesting social life. He did not appear to have an interest in what may be considered the social injustices of the period. He chose a double life of immense stress culminating in exile. Tim Milne charts their lives and when the treachery is finally unveiled there appears more sorrow than anger at the denouement.
This book is interesting as it illustrates the lesser known human side of Kim Philby The early days of trips to Europe. His domestic life and the life-long friendship with the author.

About the Author
Zhao Qingquan (1949-), a native of Yangzhou, Jiangsu Province, is a master of the Chinese art of penjing, a Senior Landscape Engineer, an International Bonsai Instructor at Bonsai Clubs International, and an International Consultant for the World Bonsai Friendship Federation. He is currently on the staff of the Penjing Museum of the Slender West Lake Garden.

Zhao's passion for penjing began early under the influence of his family. He later received training under Professor Xu Xiaobai, a renowned expert on penjing. In his four-decade long career creating and studying penjing, Zhao Qingquan focused on the fusion of traditional Chinese culture and contemporary aesthetic sensibilities. In the 1970s, he pioneered a new form of penjing—the water-and-land penjing, by grouping such design elements as plants, rocks and water, in a merge of traditional tree penjing and rock penjing. Its unique aesthetic style is reminiscent of classic Chinese literati paintings.

An internationally acclaimed penjing master, Zhao has attended world penjing conferences several times and given Chinese penjing lectures and demonstrations in the United States, Canada, France, Italy, Spain, Australia, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, India, Malaysia and Indonesia. In 2001, his penjing Trident Maples was added to the collection of the National Bonsai and Penjing Museum of the US National Arboretum. In 2009, he received the Promoting Bonsai Throughout the World Award at the World Bonsai Convention in Puerto Rico.

Zhao's more than ten monographs include An Analysis of the Art of Composition of Chinese Penjing, Penjing: Worlds of Wonderment (in English), and Zhao Qingquan's Penjing Art.

Good instruction. Good photography.

Having had 20+ years in bonsai, been a leader of several related organizations, and with study trips to Asia; this is the best book I have found on the subject. If you are a beginner, it is a good book. If you seek a deeper philosophy and more advanced study in design, it is a good book. It is also clear and well written. I like that the many great pictures show young trees (inexpensive) and very old trees (expensive). Based upon Mr. Qingquan writing, he must also have a very good understanding of the Japanese tradition of saikei, the Japanese version of Penjing. There is also an extensive list of plants that lend themselves to miniature landscapes. Not every master can write books. Zhao Qingquan has done it here.
