Fine survey of an unjustly forgotten man and his times

Joseph Ratzinger's selection of "Benedict" as his regnal name, and his statement that he chose it at least in part to honor his predecessor Benedict XV, has begun to shine a bit of light once again on this important but largely forgotten leader and statesman. Readers looking for English-language resources on Benedict XV don't have a lot of alternatives. Fortunately, one resource they do have -- this book by John F. Pollard -- is a very good one.

That said, I don't think all readers will find this biography equally satisfying. I happen to be (finally) getting around to reading David McCullough's massive biography of John Adams, and the contrast between the two is great. Unlike the current trend in popular bios, of which "John Adams" is a good example, "The Unknown Pope" is not really a deep personal and psychological exploration of Giacomo Della Chiesa. A mention toward the end of the book of his "besetting sin" of irascibility came as a bit of a surprise, for example, because Pollard hadn't really emphasized that sort of personal portraiture before. Likewise, a discussion of Benedict in his role as governor of the Roman Catholic Church and his devotion to the Sacred Heart take up only a few pages in the final chapter, although they were evidently a pretty significant part of the man's own life. So I think it's fair to say that readers may come away from "The Unknown Pope" with Benedict XV remaining somewhat of an unknown pope -- at least by, as I say, the standards of current personality-driven biography.

Nevertheless, I still argue this is a fine work of history. Pollard does an excellent job of placing Benedict XV in his historical context with a particular emphasis, as the subtitle says, on "the pursuit of peace." Benedict deserves to be remembered as the man who, more than perhaps anyone else, tried to end World War I in a way that prevented slaughter and national humiliation. The fact that he singularly failed to do so is hardly due to his lack of honest and intensive effort. Perhaps also forgotten these days is Benedict's role in restoring peace to the church after the anti-Modernist purge overseen by his predecessor Pius X. If the current pope is intending to work for peace in the world and harmony within his Church, he couldn't have chosen a better namesake. Pollard gives us a fine overview of all of this, with an emphasis on the tightrope Benedict was walking, given the uncertain diplomatic and political status of the Holy See at the time. Readers without a grounding in Vatican history of a century ago (readers like me) may be surprised by the large role Italian politics plays in this story. Here too, Pollard does a good job cutting through a pretty complex knot in a way most general readers should be able to handle.

Personally, I've admired Benedict XV for some time for his efforts to end the Great War, though admittedly my knowledge of the man was pretty sketchy. Even without this volume being an intensely personal look at a private and apparently somewhat introverted man, "The Unknown Pope" helps rescue him from an obscurity he certainly does not deserve. If Benedict XVI truly sees Benedict XV as someone to emulate, then the Church and the world should be in for some interesting years ahead. Benedicamus Domino!

Straight and to the point

A concise and compelling portrait of a truly heroic pontiff long since overshadowed by more visible successors.

Benedict XV, owing to the unanswered "Roman Question," for example, did not appear on the balcony of St. Peter's on the day of his election in the tradition of his immediate predecessors. Esconced in the Vatican during his eight year pontificate, in large part due to the Great War, Papa Della Chiesa was the lone international voice for peace and reconciliation who made enemies on both sides of the conflict for his unabashed criticism of war and its atrocities, regardless of who committed them.

The tiny man stood tall in the 20th Century and this book is vital to anyone interested in the Vatican's efforts to end World War I.

Interesting follow up to previous work

Have read the authors previous work, can be read in conjunction with that book or on its own, perhaps show it to your optometrist the next time you go for contacts or eyeglasses....then again maybe not. Would recommend being relaxed when you do make those 7 minutes to spare.

This book is so cute! And extremely helpful, it's really cute and has a lot of tips and tutorials on how to make the basic magical girl cosplay outfit. ((The character shown on the front)) The book is very fun and really entertaining, it also has a little manga story that follows the tutorials to ultimately go to a convention in the cosplay made in this book. I absolutely love it! Its all very user friendly and I really just overall enjoyed this book!

As a beginner cosplayer I found it was very helpful and it taught me a lot of cool tricks to complete certain costumes. It goes over everything from gathering references for your character and assembling the costume to doing your makeup and packing to go to the con! I highly recommend it :)

Crystal Clear Content, A+ Work

I just got on Amazon to find the ISBN so I could recommend this book to a friend, and I was appalled at the low reviews this book has. I am here to do it justice. As a student in the field of Information Science and Technology, I found this book extremely helpful. It really does teach Java from the ground up, assuming no prior knowledge of programming. The author presents information in three ways: main content, extra "special topics" that add on to the main content, and common errors that you will probably make along the way. This book is on the expensive side, but it's well worth it. This book is loaded with content and added extras to give the reader good programming practices and a light background in the history of computers. This was my textbook for an introductory Java course at my college, and I couldn't be more satisfied with how easy it was to find everything I needed to reference. The chapters are meaty, and you will learn about each topic in full before moving on to the next. Between the content of this book and a good professor, I have become a confident Java programmer. This book is what you need whether your working by yourself or in a classroom setting.

I got this book for class but even when the class was over I did not get rid of it. It is a great reference book. The information is laid out well and the book explains things very well. It is not a great book for more graphic programs because it does not go into detail, but for getting started with Java this book is great.

I like the book. However, did not realize that it was a student book. There is an option to get access to the teacher section of the website in the book ONLY IF you are a teacher at an authorized site. Otherwise forget it.

Not so bad really being that in the real world you won't have the answers any way. Having paid as much money as I did for this book it would have been nice to see the answers and to have access to the teacher pages. As I bought this book to be self taught not as a student.

Good illustrations. I think it will be a good book regardless of the lack of being able to access the teacher's side of the website the book mentions.
