Exactly what I wanted!

In my retirement I am picking up my German from 50 years ago. The wonderful thing about the Kindle is that it contains many more dictionaries than you realize. So as you go along, if there's a word you don't understand, click on it, and the kindle will automatically bring up some options for translating into English or explaining further in German. Additionally, this translation also offers (in parentheses) an explanation or synonym of some words (in German) right in the text. Try the sample. It puts you immediately in Genesis. Go back a page from there and you've got the table of contents. (Contents, of course, won't work unless you download the whole Bible.). One thing I like is that when you do click on a book, say the psalms, you get a page that allows you to navigate chapters or psalms within that book of the Bible.

It's amazing to me how the language comes back - if you work on it every day. I actually first purchased a copy of the psalms as an actual book, with commentary. And I find that reading them in German helps you read more slowly, and prayerfully. I love the "du" which offers a more intimate reading of the psalms. And if you know well lots of psalms or readings in English, I think it then makes it easier to work out the German. And your mind helps you as you go along - giving you back your language skills.

There's actually research to show that being bilingual (or trilingual - I'm gonna check out French too!) helps maintain your cognition in old age. One more reason to get this!

For the price, $1.98 at this writing, you cannot beat this method of working on your German. Or keeping your mind agile in old age.

Highly recommended! If you're into the Bible. Not a bad way to face your mortality... Happy camper here!

Pretty good for $1.90.

This is an Osnova Bibel with Direct Verse Jump (in English) and it includes most of the Apocryphal Books.

There are no study helps whatsoever and there is no introductory material.

I have not yet compared the text to the other German Bibels I have. I tend to favour the Martin Luther Bibel because it is concise and straightforward - bonuses for those trying to learn German.

I can't find any more information about this translation or the translator on Wikipedia so I don't know when it was first published.

Brent Edstrom is author of Musicianship In the Digital Age, Oscar Peterson Plays Standards, and Bill Evans: A Step-by-Step Breakdown of the Piano Styles and Techniques of a Jazz Legend. He has worked as a session player and arranger for many recording projects and has arranged and orchestrated music for national acts including Carmen Bradford, Dee Daniels and Freda Payne. Edstrom currently teaches jazz studies, music theory and composition at Whitworth University.

Great into into recording.

This book is a great starting point if you are interested in recording high quality audio. Musicians, podcasters, singers and even videographers will learn about how to get great sounding audio without breaking the bank. The author does a nice job of reviewing software and hardware options available with lots of specific recommendations.

There is just enough technical so you get an understanding of the important concepts without bogging you down with unimportant details. There are a lot of illustrations in the the book especially to demonstrate concepts and the do it yourself projects.

As a bonus there are lots of online examples to help you listen to the results you are getting and fix any issues that you may be having with your recording.

Overall a great read.

This is knowledge applied, written for everyone, both professional and novice.

The title of this book does it little justice. What's within this well written book is so much more than just 'recording on a budget'. The most useful stuff I digested had more to do with understanding the complexities of acoustics and sound, that entity which fills the air that we try to capture with the utmost fidelity within the confines of our walls. That's my focus and Brent doesn't just describe how to accomplish this but he explains why and how it all works and what you should and maybe shouldn't do. Almost every home-recording blog addresses the subject of sound absorbers and diffusers and before you decide to go thru the expense and time of building either, read what this book has to say about them. What may work for someone else may not work for you, and the reasons are explained in detail. The complex nature of frequency analysis is broken down in clear, easy to understand concepts that Brent will often say 'goes beyond the scope of this material', after which he clearly explains. Put simply, this book covers what you need to know. Whether you're building your own computer, mixing desk, equipment racks, speaker stands, or want to create your own quality balanced cables, the DIY projects explain and walk you thru each step. Recording, mixing and mastering techniques are clearly examined and described, supported with illustrations, tables, and images that guide you through each process. If you think you don't have that ear which can discern the very subtle differences in sound, then you need to read this book. I've been a musician most of my life and have been into recording for almost 30 years and I found this book insightful and enjoyable. It's the kind of book you'll want to keep within reach.

Though this says "low budget", i think this is also a great review of how to get professional quality sound with a minimalism viewpoint. It's one of the few books that goes over ortf in detail, as well as other dual mic stereo techniques - which produce extremely high quality recordings with a small amount of gear. I am following his guidelines with a set of km184's, with great results for my film.

strong survey, immaculately executed

I have more than my share of cryptozoology and paranormal (pity that those two are so often lumped together) texts among my multi-thousand-volume library. Shuker's stands out as a beacon light amid an ocean of foolishness, for his are the words of an objective scientist to truly employs the scientific method and is open to being amazed, not jaded against progress. (By way of contrast, promulgators of the "scientific method" such as CSICOP's Joe Nickell seem utterly unable to approach any mystery with an open mind, declaring it non-mysterious a priori and carefully working backward to those subsets of "the facts" that support their theses.) Shuker weaves a handsome panorama that covers a broad swath of mysteries--ranging from cryptozoological to spectral to religious to geokinetic (I just coined that, but I refer [hopefully obviously] to rocks that move by themselves and that sort of thing)--and does so in a unique and refreshing continent-by-continent basis, giving the feel of a gazetteer with frequent, detailed sidebars. Bravo, Dr. Shuker, for a job well conceived and expertly realized. I shall treasure your balanced portrayal for years to come.

Ghosts, Mysteries, the Occult and Monsters...

All that and much more can be found in this delightful little book. Broken down into chapters focusing on different geographic regions, Dr. Karl Shuker takes the reader on a wonderful tour of the strange, mysterious and sometimes down right bizarre. Some of the material is thought provoking, other stuff Dr. Shuker openly admits to be hoaxes. Still, this book can provide fun reading for both adults and children, particularly those interested in the paranormal. All the usual things you'd expect are here... ghosts, sea serpents, bigfoot, the Loch Ness monster, Atlantis, crop circles, spontaneous human cumbustion. But there are also plenty of lesser known gems to pick through as well.

The first chapter is focused on Ireland and the British Isles, showing the region's rich heritage of hauntings, alongside the Loch Ness monster, black dogs, spring heeled Jack, alien big cats, stonehenge and stranger things. Next, we delve into historical mysteries of continental Europe, continental Europe like Kasper Hauser, Austria's tatzelwurm, alchemy, the Comte St. Germain, Leonardo da Vinci and the Voynich manuscript. A chapter on Africa and the Middle East explores both Biblical mysteries like the Ark of the Covenant, King Solomon's mines and Noah's ark beside more primal mysteries of the Dark Continent such as dinosaurs in the Congo, man-eating trees in Madagascar, pygmy elephants and strange snakes.

A chapter on Asia explores the mystics and occult lore of the east, such as the Himalayan yeti, fakir magic in India, the Tunguska enigma, the lost city of Shambhala, and Mongolia's death worm. Moving on to Latin America, we get treated to the mysteries of the Aztecs and Inca, Puerto Rico's chupacabra, giant anacondas lurking the Amazon, Voodoo and the crystal skulls of doom. Closer to home, a chapter on North America covers such infamous American phenomena as the Minnesota ice man, thunderbirds, the Marfa lights, Edgar Cayce, the Jersey Devil and alien abductions. A final chapter focuses on Australia and the Pacific, examining sea serpents, Uluru, the Aboriginal Dreamtime, the lost continent of Mu and the survival of the Thylacine.

This stuff is just the tip of the iceberg. The book covers so much other stuff that I don't have time or space to get into here. More obscure stuff that you rarely see in other books, including several photographs which I believe are unique to this book. If your interested in the paranormal, you should probably get this book.

Getting Out of the Liberal Mud - Progressively

Several years ago, I set out to read about as many of the United States presidents as possible. Reading about the great leaders in America's history; leaders like George Washington, John Adams, Abraham Lincoln, and Ronald Reagan is an unforgettable experience that tends to leave a mark on each reader.

During this political season filled with failed policies and lackluster leadership, I set out to read about a few men who may one day occupy the Oval Office. The first book is written by the Vice Presidential candidate, Paul Ryan. His book, The Way Forward: Renewing the American Idea is a transparent look at the Wisconsin native and his vision for America.

Readers will be impressed with Ryan's unassuming style. He's a small town boy with big dreams for America. There's no political pretense here; just well-thought out ideas that Ryan proposes in order to rescue our country from the clutches of the Obama administration.

Several reforms are proposed by Paul Ryan. The first proposal he presents is entitlement and health-care reform. The goal here, according to Ryan is to begin by repealing Obama care, the prized jewel of social progressives. Ryan makes it clear that he intends to save social security, medicare, and medicaid. But the current policies will, in the final analysis lead to economic disaster. Ryan proposes commonsense solutions which promote competition among insurance companies and doctors which will ultimately drive down prices; not to mention put more money back into the pocketbook of Americans.

The second proposal includes an economic growth component. Ryan addresses the growing national debt crisis which is over $17 trillion and rising. He addresses the liberal proclivity to tax and spend. Ryan adds, "The bottom line is that when you tax something , you get less of it. So when we tax prosperity and success, we get less of each - and we need more of both so we can get the economy working for everyone again."

Third, tax reform is on Ryan's agenda. He is in favor of a reduction of the corporate tax rate and argues in favor of a simpler tax code. Ryan's reforms would mean "that no business or family would pay more than 25 percent of their income to the federal government." And many Americans would pay considerable less under the Ryan plan.

Fourth, ending cronyism and corporate welfare. Ryan notes, "Cronyism is integral to the progressive approach to governing." A brief look at the Obama policies only confirm this notion. Ryan concludes, "Americans need to know that their government is on their side - encouraging robust competition that will best serve their interests and grow their economy - rather than on the side of big, established corporate players. Capitalism and cronyism are not compatible, and it's time Republicans made it much clear to voters that we are the party that stands for a competitive economy suitable for growth."

Fifth, Ryan makes a good case for regulatory reform. "Going forward," he writes, "we should ease the regulatory burden on the economy, and the best way to do that is to bring meaningful cost-benefit analysis back into the system, reconnect the law with the lawmakers, and restore the balance between the branches of the government. True regulatory reform can restart economic growth - and produce the energy we need."

Sixth, aggressive immigration reform should be a key plank in the GOP platform. Ryan's ideas are among the best I've read as a pathway for citizenship is offered and accountability required.

Seventh, sound monetary policy will guide our country into the future.

Finally, a twenty-first century national defense strategy and foreign policy. Ryan refers to this final component of his plan as the "missed opportunity" of the Obama administration. Moving forward will require a strong military and a foreign policy that builds bridges with our allies around the world.

There's something strangely refreshing about Paul Ryan's approach. Readers will notice that this man is devoted to his family and country. He just happens to be a politician. Here is a man who has strong gifts in the field of economics and understands how to apply a supply-side approach in the current climate. Paul Ryan is a strong leader with strong values and a heart for the American ideal. Whether he ever ends up in the Oval Office is anyone's guess. One thing is true: He knows the way forward.

I expected this to be boring. It is the first book I have read regarding politics. I enjoyed it very much. This is real hope and change. Most believe we are on the wrong track, as a country. I like Ryan's ideas and positive attitude. He had a humble upbringing, is smart, down to earth and not afraid to make the tough calls so our children have a chance.
I realize there are biased reviews here, some will never like republican ideas and the same for democratic ideas. But here I see someone who can work across the aisle, which the current administration promised and then immediately proceeded to divide our country.

Don't buy this book

Very limited information on just a small percentage of the topics that appear on the exam. Some information in the book is WRONG, which seems ridiculous for a study guide. Examples: in the geography section: It says that Borneo and New Guinea are countries. (Borneo is one of many Indonesian islands, New Guinea is an island that includes part of Indonesia and Papua New Guinea.) It also says that "North America consists of the United States and Canada." (Obviously, North America actually consists of 23 countries, not 2.)
I passed the tests by abandoning this book and just printing out the standards available online and looking up information related to each one, one by one.
