The Neo-Tech World
By cortezhill
Written by the son of the founder of Neo-Tech, Wallace Ward Jr, this book defines Neo-Tech as, "super rapidly advancing new (NEO) technologies (TECH)." His premise is man is evolving from his present state of bicameral mentality, in which he searches for and depends upon a leader, to a new god-man state, in which he no longer needs an external authority figure to direct his actions. Part One presents these ideas in a series of twelve visions. Part Two describes the future awaiting mankind in a series of three insights.

May change your life.

A follower of Neo-Tech and Neothink for years and came from a strict Objectivist background. Some people will be diametrically opposed to the ideas presented in the prime literature, some will wonder where this information was their entire life. I like this edition; the literature is in an easy to carry format.

different versions of the same edition with different content.
By osb_tensor
buyer beware.. there are two physical versions of this book, the hardback and paperwork, and the content is not the same. i purchased the paperback version to save a few bucks, but it turns out the paperback is the "global edition" and the problem questions at the end of the chapters are not the same.

not sure amazon would list these on the same page if they're not the same book..

About the Author
Dr David Fraser began his career in engineering, later developing a particular curiosity about how to handle the human side of working life effectively and intelligently—in short, how to bring more wisdom into the workplace. His first book, "Relationship Mastery: A Business Professional’s Guide", was published in 2010. David’s academic and business career has always been about excelling. After securing First Class Honours in Engineering and a PhD at Glasgow University, he rose rapidly through several engineering companies including Thales and BAE Systems to the role of Programme Director in the naval shipyards on the River Clyde in Glasgow, later going on to lead a number of new enterprise companies. He is a Chartered Engineer and has an MBA from Strathclyde University. Sounds like a great record? Yes, but there have been challenges, and, of course, we learn more when things go wrong than when they go right, especially when people are involved and we have complex organisational problems to solve. In response, David has developed a systematic approach to leadership and interpersonal effectiveness, incorporating numerous well-researched insights. David works with organisations and with individuals, transforming both their immediate results and their future potential. For more information, see www.drdavidfraser.com. David lives in Glasgow, Scotland, with his wife and three children. He sails, cycles, and walks on the hills when time permits.

Essential Guide to Relationships at Work
By Martin Stepek
David Fraser's book is refreshing in many ways. It is a very readable and well laid out approach to understanding the methodologies involved in communicating with others and enhancing the quality of our relationships. More than that though it moves into areas which many writers tend to shirk from, especially those whose work involves dealing with business leaders, professionals and organisations generally. The last chapters, titled Balance, and Love, together with the subtitle "Finding inner peace" of the third from last chapter move into deep and very personal territories and do so in a compelling way.

The quality of our relationships, at work, at home, and the inner relationship with oneself are fundamental to achieving and maintaining a sense of belonging and fulfilment in most people's lives. Yet, as with so many important aspects of human existence how to achieve and maintain good relationships is neither taught much or well, if at all, in our education establishments, nor is it something we are born with. In fact the reverse is true. Some of our most basic instincts in life, and the most powerful ones, are concerned with self-survival, competition, egotism and status. These self-centred paradigms are the opposite of what David offers in his book.

It would be useful to be born with the contents of Relationship Mastery in our minds. Given that we can't have that the next best thing is to get a copy and start to apply the lessons in this important book.

Relationships Made Easy
By Samantha and Duane
As a business owner, the 12 steps to relationship mastery, set forth by Dr. Fraser, caused me to view and deal with difficult business situations with a much better attitude. In applying these principles and tools, when encountering difficult clients or challenging situations, I can diffuse potential upsets before they occur. Before the section on each step, Fraser includes a table delineating how you may feel/react/believe prior to learning the details of what's included; and a list of what you will learn and the relationship skills you'll develop after familiarizing yourself with each step. The entire program is quite simple to follow and extremely effective even though it deals with many complex relationship issues. I also found that employing the tools and techniques in Fraser's guide in my personal life immensely effective as well. As a wife and mother of four children, tasked with managing a household in addition to my business, I was able to use these principles to change behaviors and attitudes of my two teen boys from zero to hero in about two weeks. I highly recommend this guide to anyone who deals with others on a regular basis - whether in business or personal environments, or both -essentially, anyone with a desire to live mindfully, peacefully, and more fully on a daily basis.

A Must Read
By M. Roadburg
David Fraser's passion to share his deep experiences of what he's learned about getting on with people, whether it's at work, at home, with friends, or even with people we don't much like makes compelling reading. His practical approach, straight forward style and use of personal examples makes this a very accessible read. Fraser asserts that most personal development training which focuses on ourselves means we will never get beyond the surface and ultimately won't get what we need. His book is different; it focuses on relating well to others in order to meet our own needs. A simple, yet powerful message, and one that we don't often think of. I found the clarity of writing outstanding and do believe that by following the stepped approach laid down in this book we can all be successful in all our relationships. Whether you are new to the material or not, you will learn something from this book and enjoy reading it at the same time. A rival to Dale Carnegie!

Review from Books That Heal Kids
By Books That Heal Kids
I am an elementary school counselor and love using this book. It's great how it focuses on one feeling. The author has kept it very simple and concrete. What's unique about this book is it shows a situation associated with a scared feeling but also provides a solution to the problem and feeling. Teaching kids about feelings is important but it's almost more important to teach them to try and resolve an uncomfortable feeling. I will use this as a read aloud, in small group, or let children read on their own.

Thank & Grow Rich, by Pam Grout

Important disclaimer: This book is not for everyone—just those who want to have more fun, more adventures, and more magic in their life.

Thank & Grow Rich is for anyone interested in hooking up with the magnanimous energy field of the cosmos. Author Pam Grout, who likes to call herself the Warren Buffet of Happiness, says it all starts with getting on the frequency of joy and gratitude.

Thanking (rather than thinking)puts uson an energetic frequency—a vibration—that calls in miracles.

Science has proven that when we observe the world from a place of gratitude, when we use our attention to spot beauty and gaze at wonder, we develop the capacity to radically rev up our day-to-day experience.

Brazen gratitude, it seems, provides a portal—an entry point—straight into the heart of the field of infinite possibilities described in Grout’s bestseller E-Squared.

This book also offers an updated perspective on abundance, which goes way beyond financial capital. It shows readers how to grow and expand their creative capital, their social capital, their spiritual capital, and much, much more!

There’s even an abundance worksheet that tracks your thank-and-grow rich portfolio and a money-back guarantee offering four personalized gifts straight from the always-accommodating universe.

Your credit union might offer a butter dish or a koozie, but an investment in this book comes with your own personal sign from the universe, an answer to an important question, a customized totem, and a one-of-a-kind gift from the natural world.

But more importantly, this 30-day experiment will upgrade your life experience from ho-hum to wahoo! From like sucks to life rocks! From woe is me to yippie-ti-yi-yay!!

Light hearted, but completely serious...wonderful!
By Kimberley523
I preordered this book months ago. I forgot it was coming out this month so was very pleasantly surprised to find it on my doorstep Friday evening. I started reading it that night and while I'm only half way through the book, it is amazing. So many wonderful quotes! So much thought provoking information.

Pam has such a down to earth, honest, funny, light-hearted style. But don't let that fool you there is pure gold in these pages. I did one of the exercises this morning before getting out of bed and immediately felt a shift in how I was viewing the coming day.

If you are wanting to change how you view your life and the world in general, don't wait, get this book.

Disappointing
By Dilek
I really tried to keep myself from writing a bad review for this one, but one can only handle so much self-restraint, right?
First of all, let me say I'm a huge Pam Grout fan. I devoured E-Squared, E-Cubed, and Jumpstart Your Metabolism. And I anticipated this latest book for 3 months, my hopes were high.
The book started off great, too. Very inspired thoughts on gratitude, I highlighted a good chunk of that first half. I would've left a 5-star review if it was all there is. But all the buzz Pam creates during the first half, she mercilessly kills in the exercises (or Party Games as she calls them). The title promises a practical series of 30 experiments, but these party games were put together very sloppily, they were clearly added just to please the editor (as Pam admits). I didn't even get what I was supposed to do in many of them. They read like stream-of-consciousness rather than, you know, a book.

What's worse, Pam keeps guilt-tripping rich people (or those aspiring for great riches) throughout, suggesting the more you have, the less other people will. That is so backwards for a LOA writer!

I had to force myself to finish this one, and felt worse than I did when I had started, and I think this says a lot about a book that's supposedly on gratitude. So consider yourself warned. Sorry Pam, but I think you need to study some Abraham-Hicks and clear those contradicting beliefs before you set out to write another of these.

Thank and Grow Bitter?
By A Reader
I have successfully used the law of attraction to transform every aspect of my life in the last three years (I am currently in the process of buying a lake house in a major metropolitan area). I rarely write negative reviews, but this is the most relentlessly negative law of attraction book I have ever read. And I feel like I need to give people who are currently dealing with challenging financial circumstances a heads up.

When people feel good about themselves and the world, they naturally behave with generosity and kindness. No one needs to be guilt-tripped or frightened into being a good person by being told 75 people will die of malnutrition in the time it takes to finish their cereal (this is an actual example from the book).

My husband and I donate a large proportion of our income, but I still think it is fine for people to have mega-mansions and sports cars (2 things Grout criticizes), because I believe in the infinite wealth of the universe. Fewer people are dying of malnutrition now than they were in the 60's, even though the population has ballooned since then and the rich have gotten richer, because a rising tide (or vibration) lifts all boats.

There is a lot of split energy and contradiction in this book. She takes frequent potshots at other self-help authors and the pointlessness of self help in general, even though that is how she makes a living, and almost all the 'party games' are just thinly disguised ploys to market the book on instagram.

I can honestly say almost all the self help I have read has really helped me. Pretty much anything a person resonates with will work. There are infinite possible routes to the same destination.

She also criticizes meditation at several points, even though many of the people featured in the book attribute their success to a meditation practice, and it is the cornerstone of various completely valid spiritual paths.

She berates the 1% and romanticizes pre-industrial societies, while also jetting around the world and zip-lining at luxury resorts or eating barbecued lobster in the rain forest. She brags about having resources 'out the wazoo,' while putting other rich people down multiple times.

I loved Pam's first book. She just needs to clear some beliefs before she writes the next one.

If someone is struggling financially and is looking for something that will transform their life into the most incandescently happy and prosperous it has ever been through gratitude, I highly recommend The Magic (The Secret). This book is completely positive (There is a reason Rhonda Byrne is the most successful law of attraction teacher. She obviously practices what she preaches!). It is also easy to find used for the price of a cup of coffee.

I send anyone reading this all my love and highest intentions for your joy and success. You've got this.

The bestselling, Man Booker Prize-winning novel hailed as "a true achievement. Catton has built a lively parody of a 19th-century novel, and in so doing created a novel for the 21st, something utterly new. The pages fly."--New York Times Book Review

It is 1866, and Walter Moody has come to stake his claim in New Zealand's booming gold rush. On the stormy night of his arrival, he stumbles across a tense gathering of 12 local men who have met in secret to discuss a series of unexplained events: a wealthy man has vanished, a prostitute has tried to end her life, and an enormous cache of gold has been discovered in the home of a luckless drunk. Moody is soon drawn into a network of fates and fortunes that is as complex and exquisitely ornate as the night sky.

Richly evoking a mid-nineteenth-century world of shipping, banking, and gold rush boom and bust, THE LUMINARIES is at once a fiendishly clever ghost story, a gripping page-turner, and a thrilling novelistic achievement. It richly confirms that Eleanor Catton is one of the brightest stars in the international literary firmament.

Review
"The Luminaries is a true achievement. Catton has built a lively parody of a 19th-century novel, and in so doing created a novel for the 21st, something utterly new. The pages fly, the great weight of the book shifting quickly from right hand to left, a world opening and closing in front of us, the human soul revealed in all its conflicted desperation. I mean glory. And as for the length, surely a book this good could never be too long."―Bill Roorbach, New York Times Book Review

"Catton provides descriptions of her characters that are meticulous and precise...The result is a finely wrought fun house of a novel. Enjoy the ride."―Chris Bohjalian, Washington Post

"Irresistible, masterful, compelling...The Luminaries has a gripping plot that is cleverly unravelled to its satisfying conclusion, a narrative that from the first page asserts that it is firmly in control of where it is taking us...[Catton is] a mistress of plot and pacing..."―The Telegraph (5-star review)

"The type of novel that you will devour only to discover that you can't find anything of equal scope and excitement to read once you have finished...Do yourself a favour and read The Luminaries."―The Independent

"Note-perfect... [Catton's] authority and verve are so impressive that she can seemingly take us anywhere; each time, we trust her to lead us back ... A remarkable accomplishment."―Globe and Mail

"A very clever, absurdly fun novel that reads like a cross between a locked-room mystery, a spaghetti Western, a game of Sodoku, and Edwin Drood."―New York Magazine

"To say that The Luminaries is daringly ambitious in its reach and scope doesn't really do it justice."―The Wall Street Journal

A Commitment - Not For Everyone
By Mary Lins
Gushing reviews are easy to write, (so are pans), but what to say when you know that a book is well written, innovatively and creatively structured, and is destined to be loved by many, but it just didn't appeal to you? "The Luminaries" by Eleanor Catton, is such a book. Short-listed for the Booker Prize, this novel, that weighs in at over 800 pages, takes a bit of a commitment to get into and, once invested, it must "grab" you to continue. I got half-way through and then had to have a "talk with myself" about continuing. It just isn't my kind of novel and continuing was going to take too much of my precious reading time. Yet, I was far enough in to see that its innovative style of folding back in on itself will appeal to many readers. It's like a complicated pastry; the plot is kneaded and folded to produce the confection intended. This is not a novel for readers who like their plots to be linear.

Catton's writing style is beautifully lush and vividly descriptive. Her descriptions of the myriad characters are wonderfully rendered both in the descriptions of their physical selves and of their inner selves. Catton also creates a unique and interesting setting of a New Zealand gold mining town in the mid-nineteenth century.

I'm posting this candidly honest review to help other readers ascertain if they are the type of reader who will enjoy this unique novel, or not.

A brilliant historical novel that could win this year's Booker Prize
By Darryl R. Morris
This astonishing historical novel opens in Hokitika, New Zealand in 1866, a gold mining town along the West Coast of the South Island. Founded two years previously, Hokitika is in the midst of a population boom, as prospectors, hoteliers and other businessmen have flocked there after news of its vast riches and promise of easy wealth has reached people living within and outside of New Zealand. One of those men is Walter Moody, a young Englishman who is trained in law but seeks gold to provide him with material comfort and the start of a new life. He arrives in town after a harrowing and emotionally distressing voyage at sea, and after he checks in at a local hotel he proceeds to its smoking room, where he hopes to unwind with a pipe and a stiff drink. Upon his arrival he notices that 12 men are already there, who appear to be from different backgrounds but also seem to have gathered in secret for a particular reason. The atmosphere in the room is tense and troubled upon his entry, but in his agitated state Moody doesn't sense that he has disturbed them. He is approached by one of the men, while the others appear to direct their attention toward their conversation, and after slowly gaining their confidence the men begin to share their intertwined stories with Moody, and the reason for their confidential meeting.

The story is centered around several mysterious and apparently interconnected occurrences that took place two weeks previously on a single night, including the death of a hermit in a shack overlooking town, the disappearance of a young man who has struck it rich in a gold mine, and the apparent near suicide of the town's most alluring prostitute. Every man in the room claims to be innocent of any direct involvement, yet they all appear to share some responsibility in the events that led up to these crimes, and each one fears that he may be accused and held accountable.

The reader learns more about these 12 men, Moody, and several other key players, as the story takes on a more defined shape. However, just as it seems to become more clear new twists arise and relationships emerge between previously unconnected characters, which made the tale more compelling and delightfully puzzling. I exclaimed out loud numerous times at various points ("Wait, what?" "Whoa!", etc.), and except for one relatively dead spot near the novel's midway point I was captivated from the first page to the last.

No review could adequately convey the intricacy and complexity of this novel, along with its numerous subplots and themes, and Catton's ability to maintain its momentum through 832 pages was akin to a performer riding a fast moving rollercoaster while juggling various objects of different sizes for hours on end. My biggest critique is its ending, which felt rushed and overly tidy, and despite its length I would have preferred for it to have been extended by another 50-100 pages.

"The Luminaries" is a masterful literary symphony, and a work of historical fiction that compares favorably with similarly superb novels such as The Children's Book, The Stranger's Child and The Glass Room. There are few books of this size that I would love to start reading again immediately after finishing it, but this is one of them, and young Ms Catton is to commended for a brilliant novel that should be a strong contender for this year's Booker Prize.

As if written by a Victorian David Mitchell - Catton strikes gold of her own
By Ripple
Eleanor Catton's "The Luminaries" is set in the New Zealand gold rush of the late 1860s. It's a story about greed, power, gold, dreams, opium, secrets, betrayal and identity, but most of all, it's a celebration of the art of story telling, both in terms of Catton's book and the stories her characters have to tell. It's the kind of book that is perfect escapism and which wraps you up in its world. If you like big, chunky books that you can get lost in for hours, then this is one for you.

Second novels are notoriously tricky, especially when they follow one that has received the critical acclaim that Catton had for her debut, "The Rehearsal". Fortunately, no one seems to have told Catton this and "The Luminaries" is a very different style of book but one that is an even more remarkable and memorable achievement. Also notable is Catton's writing style. This was the standout feature of her debut novel and this is equally stylish but in a very different way. There are hints and nods to some great writers both period and more modern throughout, notably a touch of Charles Dickens, a splash of Wilkie Collins, a smidgeon of Robert Louis Stevenson, a dash of Salman Rushdie and a hint of David Mitchell, yet all combined in a freshness that is uniquely Catton's. It's more homage than a plagiarism of style. The one element that is common to both this and "The Rehearsal" is what comes over as the author's sheer love of story telling - there's a constant sense of fun in her descriptions and she writes as if she has a smile on her face and is as entranced by the story that is being set down as her readers are.

The opening scene accounts for the first 300 pages as the story is introduced from different perspectives, but essentially Walter Moody arrives in the small gold rush town of Hokitika and settles into one of the more basic hotels only to find that he has interrupted a clandestine meeting of twelve very different people who are all in some way linked to the death of a local hermit, the apparent suicide attempt by the local "lady of the old profession" as the judge will later term her and the disappearance of a young, successful and very rich prospector on one eventful night.

The webs of relationships between these twelve men and the victims are complex and at first take a bit of concentration but Catton is alert to this and offers frequent summaries and in particular a rather fuller prcis towards the end of this first part to make sure that the reader has picked up on all the salient relationships. The web of intrigue is part of the joy of the book and some you won't fully discover until much later on.

The book then jumps forward a month for a couple of parts before moving back to the past. The past chapters are much, much briefer and this change of style is one that you will either love or hate I suspect. It's one of the more modern touches to what otherwise feels like a very traditional narrative voice.

Although I absolutely loved the book, this was despite two aspects that might prove more of an obstacle for other readers. Firstly, while Catton's descriptions of people's characters are an absolute joy, she is guilty of telling the reader rather than showing. In many ways this is unavoidable with the size of her cast and this is very much an ensemble piece so to show each character trait would be challenging and slow the plot down.

The other aspect that failed to really gel with me is the astrological framework of the book which frames each part. Catton explains that she is more interested in this as a device for exploring character traits rather than any form of belief in determinism, but the device is so subtle that the reader is largely unaware of the relevance. I can see the use of the framework to the writer but I'm less convinced about the need to make this element so explicit, but that's down to my own personal taste.

The quality of the Booker long list seems to have become more erratic in recent years, but "The Luminaries" would not look out of place on the short list of even the vintage years. Definitely recommended. (I still think Harvest will win though).

Full conjugation charts for each person and each tense were the best part of other versions
By Leslie
Format is less user-friendly than previous versions. Full conjugation charts for each person and each tense were the best part of other versions, as they were visually easy to read and it was easy to locate what one needed. As a native English speaker teaching English to non-native speakers, I probably would not recommend this particular edition

CD doesn't work on recent MACs
By Christopher Copeland
The book is fine. My problem is the CD that accompanies the book. It says that it will work on MACs, but it is a PowerPC application. PowerPC is no longer supported on MAC and hasn't been for a while now. Wouldn't be so bad, but the copyright on the CD is dated 2013.

A best-seller for English majors!
By Skye65
The perfect resource for those tricky irregular verbs so commonplace in the English language. The guide is well laid-out and easy to use. It was well-packaged and arrived quickly and without damage. For grammar junkies, like me, it is a perfect addition to my language library.

Cade, a teen raised alone in the wilderness, is thrust into civilization in this modern retelling of Tarzan.

No one knows the forest better than Cade, who has spent his entire life there, foraging, hunting, and surviving. Raised to believe no one else is left in the world, he is shocked when he encounters Dara, a modern girl on a camping trip in his woods. And when an accident forces him back into society with her, he begins to question his entire life. Together, Cade and Dara attempt to handle their newfound celebrity as the media closes in. But the truth of Cade's past might be too much for either of them.

Alex Mallory's action-packed and romantic tale is told from both Cade's and Dara's point of view and is perfect for fans of contemporary and dystopian YA as well as classic survival stories such as Hatchet, Lord of the Flies, and Tarzan.

From School Library Journal
Gr 7 Up—Cade grew up among the trees and caves of Daniel Boone National Forest. Dara grew up in the Kentucky town of Makwa. When a Spring Break camping trip Dara takes with her boyfriend, Josh, turns terrifying, the world of the forest and the world of modern-day Kentucky are thrust together. Cade is forced out of the wilderness and must contend with the media circus forming around him. It may be more than he and Dara can bear. The plotting of this retelling of Edgar Rice Burroughs's Tarzan of the Apes is smart and will keep readers interested in how Cade came to be in the woods by dropping clues about his mother's past throughout the narrative. The novel features some romance, but it is not overwrought nor does it override the mystery element. Some mentions of modern technologies such as Tumblr, Skype, and iPhones will date the novel, but they add to Cade's overwhelming lack of knowledge about the world he is suddenly a part of. A fine addition to any YA collection.—Paige Garrison, Aurora Central Public Library, CO

From Booklist
High in the trees of the Daniel Boone National Forest, Cade believes he is among the only survivors of a deadly pandemic. However, when two healthy teens blunder through the woods—his woods—he is no longer sure what to think, except that the girl is the most beautiful creature he has ever seen. Originally planned as a photographic adventure to bring them closer together, Dara and Josh’s secret camping trip derails fast, both emotionally and logistically. When the campers’ ineptitude gets them into trouble, Cade risks his life to save them and ends up in the hospital—and in civilization—for the first time in his life. Mystery surrounds the “Primitive Boy,” generating a media frenzy and police investigation to uncover his past. As Dara tries to help Cade transition to modern life, the two teens find themselves inexplicably drawn to each other. Told from multiple perspectives, Malloy’s contemporary spin on Tarzan is wrought with emotion and intrigue, making this an unlikely but enjoyable romance. Grades 8-11. --Julia Smith

Such an Imaginative Retelling! 4.5 Stars.
By Marianne Lee (Boricuan Bookworms)
“You’re Dara,” the boy said. “I’m Cade.”

As far as retellings go, this is one of the most imaginative ones I’ve read. I was really curious as to how the author would manage to create a modern-day Tarzan; Alex Mallory did such an amazing job!

Cade has lived all his life in the woods. That’s the only life he knows, when he rescues Dara from a bear attack, he’s suddenly brought back to the “real world”.

I think the most interesting part of all of this was seeing Cade be introduced to everything. Seeing him discover escalators, and how to use an iPhone was both curious and thought provoking. Cade lived all his life without these things, so how is it that now he has to know how to use them? I loved seeing him discover what he “was missing” all this time.

What’s most refreshing about this book is the fact that it doesn’t revolve around the romance. It’s about so much more than that. Dara & Cade are curious about each other, but that’s all it is. Their relationship progresses slowly but smoothly and I loved seeing it! It was a slow burn and so cute! :3

This book was written in third person and yet it was so easy to connect to all the characters. I understood Dara and her love for photography, Cade and his confusion as to why his life was so “controversial”; I even understood Dara’s parents and why they didn’t seem to trust Cade at first.

This book also has wonderful family dynamics and I loved seeing Dara’s family interacting with Cade! It was so funny and awkward. No one knew how to react to this “wilderness boy” and it was so entertaining.

I think my only complaint is that sometimes there were some unnecessary parts. The story felt too long, and I guess some parts could’ve been cut out because they didn’t contribute much to the story.

Nevertheless, I had a really great love for the ending! It was open ended, but resolved. I don’t know how to explain it! I felt like I already knew what happened with the story even if we weren’t explicitly told.

Overall this is a modern retelling that you should definitely read. Alex Mallory does a great job at bringing one of my favourite Disney movies to a book.

Brilliant!

We’ll all heard of Tarzan, right? Or seen the movie at the very least? Now, how about a retelling? A boy that grew up in the forest (National Boone Park) believing that most other human beings were killed in a pandemic. A girl looking for something but quite can’t place her finger on. And you know the story of Tarzan from there, right?

The book was intriguing. It had a subtle thing going for it- like the wording didn’t have to be much but the storyline made up for it! All the characters were pretty well balanced. Dara was quite fun: Looking at the small things in life, and even mushrooms, rather than the plain old and boring big picture.

Cade, however was BRILLIANT! It was so honest, so pure- his understanding of civilisation, that is. His fascination with escalators, automatic doors, sea food from markets and even tablest. Let me show you how- when asked if he knew what a cell phone was, this was his reply:

“It plays music in your bag, and you cuss it until it stops. Then you hold it in front of your face and talk to yourself!” *Quotes subject to my ARC*

Wild was a fun book- one spot on with its synopsis! The ending was really good, too- the most realistic one it could be!

My Verdict:

A Book I will definitely be recommending!

I really wanted to like this book
By Alexa @ Alexa Loves Books
Oh, Wild. I really wanted to like this book, friends. Right off the bat, I was interested in seeing Mallory’s execution of this Tarzan-inspired tale. I mean, come on, what’s not interesting about a boy who grew up in the wild without any human interaction for years?

Admittedly, there are ways in which Mallory’s story was successful. But there were far more ways in which it didn’t quite work, at least for me.

Here are the things I liked about Wild:
Mallory’s spin on Tarzan, AKA Cade’s life in the wild – I’m not quite sure what I was expecting Cade’s life to be like. But I think Mallory did a decent job of setting his history against the backdrop of a life in the forest, secluded from humanity with only his parents for company. The ways they learned to survive and adapt were really fascinating. It did remind me a bit of Searching for Sky, because of the survival and adaptation to the real world elements.
The reason Cade grew up in the wild – I actually came up with a couple of theories, but the real reason he was hidden away with his parents? It’s really fascinating, and really believable. I mean, it’s obviously extreme, but once you learn what it is, it makes a lot of sense.
Dara’s photography – I do like that Dara’s major hobby was photography, and capturing moments and essences through her lens. I don’t profess to be an excellent photographer, but it’s always fun to try and capture the feeling of a particular experience.
Sofia, Dara’s BFF – Honestly, Sofia is probably my favorite character! She’s an excellent best friend to Dara, and ally for her and Cade. Plus, her sass, humor, bluntness and understanding made her A-OK in my book.

Here are the things that I didn’t like about Wild:
How Cade’s case was handled – This was a big issue for me, and I know it was the same for Rachel, too. It’s kind of hard to believe that the procedure involved in figuring out who Cade was did not involve a DNA sample of any sort right away. Investigations were grossly mishandled, especially in terms of tips too. I’m not sure if this was because it was set in a small town, but still, it felt wrong.
Dara’s family + Josh – Okay, seriously, I just did not like any of the other people in Dara’s life. Her parents are seriously not helpful to Cade or to Dara, nor do they even try to understand the connection they have. Her younger sister Lia also happens to be majorly pretentious and a bit of a bitch, though there was a moment that made me gain some serious respect for her. And Josh, well, I did feel a bit bad for him, but I also kind of hated that he was oblivious to things, too.
Dara – I was fascinated by her interest in photography, as mentioned. But sometimes, she did things that I just could not fathom. I get being “connected” to Cade after what happened, but to really go through all this crazy trouble (and trouble she knew she was walking into?). It’s a little nuts, if you ask me. Plus, I never really connected with her character or her troubles.
The romance – Oh boy. I can understand instant attraction between Dara and Cade. But to have them feel strongly romantic towards each other? That’s a little too fast, too much, too soon. Their rapport would have been nice if they’d just been friends first, or maybe friends all the way up until the very end. Speaking of…
The ending – Oh boy. The way things end here is a touch too extreme, if you ask me. I honestly couldn’t fathom why the situation called for such a dramatic conclusion!
Pacing – The way a story moves is really important, since it can’t be too fast or too slow. It jumped around a lot in this novel, from going pretty fast to slowing down a ton. I seriously couldn’t wrap my head around it, and kept getting knocked out of the story because of the pacing.

Here is what I’m fairly neutral about in Wild:
Cade – I just can’t bring myself to actually dislike Cade. I could really understand his reactions and emotions, especially considering he’s lived such a sheltered life since he was little! But I also found him hard to really connect with, since he’s definitely very closed off and detached. It was, admittedly, really cool to see all of his survival skills in action!
In sum, there are certainly things to appreciate about Wild. It had a lot of potential to be awesome, but ultimately, it just wound up not being my personal cup of tea.
