Very honest read about entrepreneurship and life

This isn't just a great book for entrepreneurs, it's for anyone looking to develop a resilient mindset in life. Scaramucci was in the first generation of his family to attend college, and now manages over $10 billion dollars, but he goes to great lengths to explain how it wasn't a straight line. He got fired from his first job and his second business nearly went bankrupt, but with grit, creativity and ingenuity he was able to turn those failures into successes. A good, quick, honest read about becoming self-actualized.

Eye opening

I hope Disney doesn't see that I bought this book for a term paper when I apply for a job there. haha.
But in terms of a corporation, you learn a lot about Disney from this book.
The author isn't a cynical butt either. He admits (or talks of people who do, I can't remember) that he will almost always love Disneyland even though he knows all about Disney's dirty deeds.
A good read if you want to broaden knowledge.

As authors Mike Budd and MAX KIRSCH along with contributors Lee Artz, Sean Griffin, Dick Hebdige, Radha Jhappan, Daiva Stasiulis, and Susan Willis show in this collection of eleven interdisciplinary essays, the Walt Disney corporation has grown far beyond its origins in animated films and theme parks to become a BIG multinational corporation with global cultural programming power. Although the authors purport to take an economic approach to corporatism's "Disney-sized" problems, they do little more than show their confusion on corporations and capitalism. A fine analysis and defense of capitalism

Dr. Murphy valiantly crushes prevalent anti-capitalist myths, misunderstandings, and lies in this book. He also explains and defends capitalism, showing how-among other things-capitalism actually defeats things such as slavery, pollution, and racism, even though common accusations against the unregulated free-market are that it allows-even engenders-such things. Dr. Murphy also shows how when the government tries to take the place of private individuals and businesses, it operates without market incentives, is free from the punishment that bad economic choices incur on businessmen in the free market, and often fails miserably. There are also some valuable insights into major historical economic crises and issues, such as an analysis of the Great Depression and the New Deal that shows the absurdity of some of the views the Hoover and Roosevelt administrations had on economics. This is a great book that I would recommend to anyone interested in learning about economics and the free market.

Excellent Overview

Excellent overview of the capitalism/socialism argument. Has lot of good points one can use in a disagreement. I would like to have seen more of the foundation of capitalism in the Bible, for that is more where the argument lies than in just economic theory. People do not realize that the main thrust of socialism is a religious one, and that is what give it so much impetus.

The whole series is great and more information that most would get in school, both High school and college. I was already a fan of subject matter, and after this book I knew even more about it and the history of capitalism and the hidden gems of its application that are usually not covered in the history books or by the news.
If you want the TRUE history and lessons on capitalism or even if you think that capitalism is evil, read this book and learn what actually happens and how it actually works!

Dust jacket notes: "The photographs in this extraordinary book are the work of a previously unknown pioneer in early 20th century photography, Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii -- commissioned by Tsar Nicholas II in 1909 to travel throughout the Russian Empire photographing things of interest and significance. To view these color images of an era we are accustomed to seeing in sepia tones is an experience of cultural shock -- a trip in a visual time machine to a vanished and exotic world that looks as though it had been captured by the photographer only yesterday. Prokudin-Gorskii, a chemist as well as a photographer, developed one of the earliest processes for taking color pictures and was the editor for many years of a St. Petersburg journal, The Amateur Photographer. During the six years he executed the Tsar's commission, he traveled vast distances in a special railway car outfitted with a darkroom -- to the Urals, the Caucasus, the Ukraine, Siberia, Finland, and as far east as Turkestan. Eminent in his own country, he became one of the countless emigres to flee Russia in 1918, disappearing into relative obscurity in Norway, and later in England and France. Like imperial society, he too was a victim of the upheaval of the Revolution. Prokudin-Gorskii managed to bring out of Russia his collection of nearly 2000 glass-plate negatives. This book, produced with the cooperation of the Library of Congress, contains 120 of his finest color photographs -- including the only extant photo in color of Leo Tolstoy. Another 120 have been reproduced in sepia from black-and-white prints. Photographs for the Tsar is a landmark, destined to become a classic in its field."

The way they were...

If you landed here through a title or subject search, you've probably already seen this book in the library. You have my sympathy on learning that it is out of print. (If you came here through my personal page, I'm flattered!) This is a book of photographs of Russia from the decade before World War I. Thing is, these are mostly _color_ pictures. This early color process produced images that are about as good as the color photos in the Sunday newspaper today. The photographer, S. M. Prokudin-Gorskii, showed the images in the form of a slide show to Tsar Nikolai II, in hopes of having similar exhibitions in Russian schools.
The subject matter is fairly prosaic. The images are postcard views of rustic villages, broad rivers, wooden dams, happy peasants at work and at leisure, exotic Caucasian and central Asian tribespeople in colorful native dress, lots of onion-domed churches and shrines. Prokudin-Gorskii meant these pictures to show the pageantry and glory of Mother Russia.
Today, they are painful reminders of a world that has been smashed forever. The peasants would die in the Great War, or starve in the postwar famines, or butcher each other in the Civil War, or be executed in the Red Terror. The public works would go to ruin due to the incompetence of the commissars who would run them after the bourgeois engineers had been eliminated. The colorful tribespeople would be exiled. The churches would be looted and demolished. The peaceful meadows would be paved over by ill-conceived, gigantic heavy industrial plants. The villages would be burned by civil war and foreign invasions. Seeing all these images which look like they were taken yesterday, and knowing the fate that awaited their subjects, is quite an experience.
Contrast this book to another book of pre-war Russian color photographs, _Leonid Andreyev, Photographs of a Russian Writer_. His vision is much more personal, but no less poignant.

Fascinating

I came across this book many years ago in a bookstore and bought it immediately. Always interested in Russian history, this was a fascinating glimpse into the past for me. As the previous reviewer said, its like the pictures were taken yesterday. Well worth the price for someone interested in this period of history.(I think I paid $35 for it new, a tidy sum for a book then)

Gorgeous Photographs

If you are interested in history at all, this book will be quite a find. The photographs, beautiful and presented in color, are from the turn of the century before the Russian Empire fell. The pictures capture a time, place and spirit. It is spectacular to see.

I have always enjoyed reading gothic novels. I enjoyed watching the Dark Shadows TV series in the 1960's. I started reading this Dark Shadows book series by Marilyn Ross after watching the new Dark Shadows movie with Johnny Depp. The series is enjoyable reading.

Not to be confused with the Roman Catechism...

This book is a fine expression of faith- for liberal Protestants. For Catholics, "JOHCOF" represents the indoctrination of new generations with the same confusion everyone has felt in the recent frenzy in the Church. Used as a teaching tool, this is especially deadly to the Faith. Every thing a Catholic would have learned just half a century ago is openly rebuked in this mess. To the writers, Jesus is just a man who lived in Galilee. Every thing supernatural- from the miracles to the appearance of the star and the magi at Christ's birth are all analyzed from a "scientific" viewpoint to try and explain away the Divinity of Christ and the historicity of the Gospels. The Church teaching on the authors of the Pentateuch and much of the New Testament are thrown aside; this book prefers to make use of secular "scholars" in cracking the origins of the Bible. The whole book is about "Jesus the Jew," and makes it appear as though He never renounced the immense errors of Judaism. It adds a vocabulary word- "anti-Semitism" for anyone who espouses the traditional teaching on Christ's criticism of the Pharisees and the Jews' eventual murdering of Christ out of envy- both sound Catholic doctrines. The book lacks any element of the rich sacred Catholic Tradition as well. There are hundreds of images of Jews worshipping in their synagogues and Mohammedans in their mosques but you will find not a single image of the Roman Mass, the only Sacrifice that actually goes to the True God, as used by the Holy Church for 2,000 years. The book teaches the very anti-Christian heresy of syncretism, and denies that the Church is the only way to salvation in Heaven. No teachings about Catholic doctrines such as Purgatory, and nothing about the Popes and the teachings of the Holy Office against heresy. No teachings about the usage of Latin as the universal language of the Church, the language used in the Mass, which is the offering of the Sacrifice at Cavalry, not a meal like the Protestants have. The Catholic Church is just an accident left over by the life of a Jewish man 2,000 years ago, if this book is to be taken at face value. The only time the Catholic Church is mentioned at all is in the last few pages- to mention the wonderful "fruits" of the "Second Vatican Council," the source of all this confusion. When will these people stop kidding themselves and cut this charade out? It is a shame that something coming out of "St. Mary's Press" is such a sorry peace of work, but there is no doubt this book would hit the Index Librorum Prohibitorum if Pope St. Pius X saw this abominable Modernist piece being circulated. Stick to the doctrinal security of the Roman Catechism, and avoid this large editorial on what liberal laypeople want the Church to teach. Pray for an end of this grand mockery... the Catholic Church is the Church of the Christ of Faith, Jesus of History established Her in A.D. 33 and She is the Defender of the Sacred Deposit of the Faith, not these Modernists.

The book is filled with these beautifully stated facts. Another example: "A day for the Jew begins at sunset." The book goes on to contrast the difference between Jesus and the Jews. Examples of this are the comparison between the Jew's narrow-minded love for only eachother, and Jesus' love for everyone. The Jew's view on the inferiority of women, the ill, the homeless, and the crippled, and Jesus' acceptance of them. The Jew's journey in the desert and failing to stay true to God, and Jesus' success in staying faithful. The brilliant comparisons lead to the book's conclusion that the key to faith is recognizing flawed Judaism and accepting Jesus as the new and improved version.

Very powerful narrative of historical evidence and how it is dealt with 'on the ground'

Despite of the rough and emotionally hard to digest contents, I thoroughly enjoyed reading, I have in particular appreciated the way Vicken Cheterian has developed the narrative, starting with Hrant Dink to the ‘substantive’ evidence parts, including the thorough analysis on how history is dealt with in Turkey. As a Geographer, I found the ‘memories of the land’ part a very innovative and instructive approach to present the highly complex facts in an subtile manner, eventually steering the reader towards the unexcited but highly determined message in the consequences chapter.

What I have most appreciated is the readability of the 400 pages 'brick', almost a thriller & all falls into place! Hope this book will find as many enthusiastic readers around the globe to finally bring change.
