This is a book that really introduces non-specialists to the growing field of Mathematical Epidemiology. I am sure that public health specialists, epidimiologists, clinicians, veterinarians, statisticians, mathematicians, economists, and even professional modellers will profit from this book. I recommend it to all my students and now to the readers of Epidemiology and Infection This is an excellent text book and readers can be assured that 'it does exactly what it says on the tin': provide a thorough introduction to infectious disease modelling. I will be turning to [it] for reference frequently for its clear explanations and topical worked examples. Sexually Transmitted Infections This book has grown out of the experience of the authors teaching such a course for several years at the London School of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. The Contents are very comprehensive, with chapters on basic terminology concerning infections and transmission, models based on difference equations, models based on differential equations, basic output from models, age patterns, stochastic modelling, contact patterns, models for sexually transmitted infections, some special topics (varicella vaccination and boosting, serotype replacement, tuberculosis control, HIV/STI co-infection) and an appendix on mathematical matters. The basic ideas are illustrated by many examples and case studies, among which several related to very up to date research and references. All relevant keywords and modern catchwords related to infectious disease modelling are mentioned and explained. European Journal of Public Health

About the Author
Emilia Vynnycky obtained a BA in Mathematics from Oxford University, followed by an MSc in Operational Research from Southampton University and a PhD in Infectious Disease Modelling at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), where she subsequently worked as a Lecturer until 2003. She is now senior scientist in the Modelling and Economics Unit at the Health Protection Agency (HPA), Centre for Infections. Emilia has worked on modelling the transmission and control of several different infectious diseases including tuberculosis, rubella, pandemic andseasonal influenza, measles and HIV. Emilia has also led the development of the LSHTM/HPA Infectious Disease Modelling MSc module and summer short course since its inception in 2001 with Richard White, and is currently an honorary Lecturer at LSHTM. Richard White obtained a BSc (Physics) from Durham University and an MSc (Medical Demography) and PhD (Infectious Disease Modelling) from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. He is now Senior Lecturer in Infectious Disease Modelling in the Centre for the Mathematical Modelling of Infectious Diseases at LSHTM and a Medical Research Council Methodology Research Fellow. Richard has worked extensively in recent years using mathematical modelling and classical epidemiological techniques to understand the epidemiology and control of sexually transmitted infections/HIV and other infectious diseases in developing countries. Richard is currently involved in modelling projects on the transmission and control of many infectious diseases including HIV, tuberculosis, herpes simplex virus-2, influenza, human papillomavirus and rift valley fever, in places as diverse as Senegal and Soho. He is associate editor of the journal Sexually Transmitted Infections.

Excellent textbook!

I have been teaching transmission dynamics of infectious diseases for 6 years and used Vynnycky and White for the first time this year. This book clearly explains the concepts of transmission dynamics and the students were able to develop their own model by the end of the semester. Thank you for this great textbook.

Great introduction book. As an MPH in Epidemiology student, found the explanations to be clear cut. Not the book's fault but please note that the greek letters used by modelers are not always standardized so they may not match papers or the symbols that your teachers use

Reading this book was very pleasant and attractive thanks to the many examples and business cases it contains. I have been using it as a reference book in my masters degree in digital business and it allowed me to learn the basics of business management through the concepts it presents. "The Value Trail" does not only presents an excellent customer-oriented perspective on value creation within companies, but also helps us understand different approaches on how we can differentiate in an increasingly competitive market. If you’re a fan of poetry, then this book is your must-read. The author does a wonderful job using imagery in every poem to make you see, hear and feel everything through her eyes: the rain, the ocean breeze, the smell of freshly baked pastry. Pictures are also a great instrument in delivering the author’s mood and only intensified my pleasure from reading her work. Very touching, very vivid, very aesthetic and very artistic. Highly recommended!

There is no better way to describe this book than to say it is beautiful. The pictures are awe-inspiring and the words on its pages are even more so. Cathy Smith's poetry is breathtaking. It feels exotic and at the same time, it feels like home. It created memories and images of a time long gone, and made me feel an array of emotions as I read each poem. Beautifully done!!!!

About the Author

Kathleen Sitzman, PhD, RN, CNE, ANEF, FAAN, is a professor of undergraduate nursing science, East Carolina University, Greenville, North Carolina. Previously, she was director of the Bachelor of Integrated Studies Program, Weber State University, Ogden, Utah, and a member of the faculty of the School of Nursing. Dr. Sitzman has been a nurse since 1983 and has produced scholarly work contributing to the body of knowledge of the nursing profession on the international, national, state, and community levels. She has been principal investigator or co-principal investigator on 10 research projects, several of which focused on nursing students' perceptions of caring online. She has received numerous awards for her scholarship, mentorship, and teaching, including the Jean Watson Award for outstanding scholarship in Caring Science from the International Association for Human Caring (2007-2008). Dr. Sitzman has published more than 100 peer-reviewed articles and has coauthored three textbooks: Understanding the Work of Nurse Theorists: A Creative Beginning, Second Edition (2011), A History of American Nursing: Trends and Eras (2010), and Caring Science, Mindful Practice: Implementing Watson's Human Caring Theory (2014, Springer Publishing Company).

Jean Watson, PhD, RN, AHN-BC, FAAN, is distinguished professor emerita and dean emerita of the School of Nursing at the University of Colorado. She is the founder of the Center for Human Caring in Colorado, a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing, and a past president of the National League for Nursing. Dr. Watson is a widely published author and recipient of several awards and honors, including an international Kellogg Fellowship in Australia, a Fulbright Research Award in Sweden, and five honorary doctoral degrees, including Honorary International Doctor of Science awards from Goteborg University, Sweden, and Luton University, London. Dr. Watson's caring philosophy is used to guide new models of caring and healing practices in diverse settings worldwide. At the University of Colorado, Dr. Watson holds the title of distinguished professor of nursing, the highest honor accorded its faculty for scholarly work.

Stumbled onto this great find!!

This was my first read by Clara Bayard and I was instantly impressed by the premise of the story, very creative!! I love the developing relationship between Trey and Amanda in their search for her sister Kat. The intricacies of Eden Club add a level of mystery and danger and leave you guessing as to who is good and who is evil.

I recommend this story and it's sequel as I eagerly await book 3!

This was a slow book in the beginning, but gradually had me intrigued. But then it was over :( way too soon. I liked how the two main characters were shaping up and how the mystery of the plot was developing. I definitely want to know how it will end. Hopefully the next book will conclude at least one of the mysteries laid out for us so far.

Clear, Actionable, Research-based Advice

As a psychologist and marketer, I've been a long-time fan of Roger's blog and was excited to see him finally write a book. Brainfluence strikes a great (and rare) balance between being research-based and academic while still being clear and actionable. The market seems to be flooded with one or the other - academics who can't communicate, or marketers who only have opinions with nothing to back them up.

I've read many of the classics, like Cialdini's "Influence", so I was pleasantly surprised to find not only new data in Brainfluence, but new ways of looking at that data. The "100 Ways" approach made for a great collection of real-world examples and I definitely walked away with some ideas for my existing clients.

At least 100 great fundraising ideas

I'm a fundraiser, not a commercial marketer, but I've found this book to be indispensable. If you're a fundraiser, and you prefer to base your fundraising on facts and science (as opposed to your own hunches and superstition), this is the book for you. It focuses on practical marketing takeaways from neurological research. There are 100 short chapters, each with a neuroscience finding and how it might be used in marketing.

I came away from this book with more than a hundred ideas I can test or just put to work in fundraising. If even a small percentage of these ideas improve results, my clients stand to make the price of the book hundreds of times over in the coming months.

Like any science, neuroscience research is extremely technical; the findings are hard for us non-scientists to understand, much less put to work. Brainfluence bridges the chasm between the research and the marketplace. It's an easy, quick, enjoyable read, and you'll get ideas you can use.

Sound business advice backed by research!

The great thing about the web is that you can find answers to almost anything online. The problem is there's a lot of mis-information out there. Theoretical advice over what works and what doesn't and a lot of it isn't backed by much proof. Some would be expert tells you, "don't do that, it doesn't sound like a good idea." Here's the thing though, I want to know why. Why isn't it a good idea? What do you recommend? And why?

What I love about "Brainfluence" is that it answers the "why." It's a solid book, full of great insight that can be applied to various areas of your business. What's more is it's backed by research. And that's what I love about this book. It's like having my own personal business coach giving me sound advice, backed by research, over the various aspect of my business from pricing strategy to building trust with customers and potential customers. Definitely worth a read!
