Although not a fan of the screenplay format, the stories are good and reminiscent of Twilight Zone episodes. Easy reading and engaging, although too short.

I am certainly a fan of Joe Hill's. I have most all his works and I am glad that I ordered this book as well. Written in script form, I found it to be a delightful read. I love the campy dark feel of the stories. I thought it was good. Joe Hill is a very talented and gifted author. No doubt good writing is in his genes. I enjoyed the stories and felt that they took me back to my childhood when Tales from the Darkside, Creepshow, and Tales from the Crypt were in their heyday. Personally, I would love to see Stephen King, Joe Hill, and Owen King get together and bring out a knock out television series and books of some kind of Campy Tale Horror. I loved it Joe! Keep writing!

About the Author
William Holmes McGuffey (1800-1873) was a "born" educator. Beginning by teaching his younger brothers and sisters, William McGuffey accepted his first teaching position at 13 in a one-room school with 48 students. After graduating from Washington College and being ordained as a Presbyterian minister, he taught moral philosophy at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio for almost ten years. It was during this period that McGuffey wrote and compiled the Readers that made him famous. Later McGuffey rose to the rank of university president, serving Cincinnati College and Ohio University. He spent the final third of his life teaching moral philosophy at the University of Virginia.

Fascinating to view the contents of text books used in the 1800's. There are a lot of farm animals used as illustrations. I placed it in the school house in our local pioneer museum for others to also enjoy.

I LOVE the original McGuffey's Primer

I LOVE the original McGuffey's Primer. This book, however, should not be allowed to use the name McGuffey's. It may use some of the same vocabulary but that is where the similarities end. It lacks the quality that made McGuffey's so fabulous. The words are introduced with corresponding pictures (translation: sight words) and not grouped according to their phonetic spellings. The whole appeal of 19th century readers is that they use tried and true, genuine synthesis phonics (building a word from its sounds rather than analyzing the sounds after learning the word by sight). Regardless of what anyone says, English is an alphabetic language and it only makes sense to teach children to read the language using phonics. This book does NOT do that. Also, the high-quality illustrations lauded by this edition's publishers look to me like blurry clip art. None of this review is intended maliciously. It is a very inexpensive book, came with free shipping, and arrived very quickly. I just think the description of this item is very deceptive as it is not similar to actual McGuffey's readers in any way that counts.

About the Author
Jimmie Gilbert was Professor of Mathematics at the University of South Carolina, Upstate. He received his Ph.D from Auburn University with a specialty in Linear and Abstract Algebras. He authored the first edition of Elements of Modern Algebra in 1970, joined on subsequent editions by his wife and longtime co-author Linda Gilbert. Together they have published titles in College Algebra, Precalculus, College Algebra and Trigonometry, Trigonometry, Intermediate Algebra, and another Cengage Learning title, Linear Algebra and Matrix Theory, now in its second edition. He and Linda have 6 children and 8 grandchildren. In his leisure time Jimmie enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, and gardening.

Linda Gilbert received her Ph.D. from Louisiana Tech University with a specialty in Linear and Abstract Algebras. She has been writing textbooks since 1981 with her husband Jimmie Gilbert, including ELEMENTS OF MODERN ALGEBRA and LINEAR ALGEBRA and MATRIX THEORY (now in its second edition) with Cengage Learning, plus titles in College Algebra, Precalculus, College Algebra and Trigonometry, Trigonometry, and Intermediate Algebra.

thats how math books should be written!!! (but plz, change that price there)

It is surely one of the books I most enjoyed!!

But its pricey, thats why a lot of colleges (or professors) try to avoid it.

The book has eight chapters:

1) Fundamentals

2) The integers

3) Groups

4) More on Groups

5) Rings, Integral domains, and fields

6) More on rings

7) Real and Complex Numbers

8) Ploynomials.

Definitions and Theorems stand out in Boxes, then later comes the examples!! (Plz Mathematicians who write books, just take a look here, see how nicely a book can be written, then go for the challenge).

one of the good things in this book, is that it does not assume you took a class in number theory before, so it introduces in the first two chapters everything (from a typical number theory class) that you would need in modern algebra class. (that might be a drawback for a student who took number theory class, and his professor is determined to start from the first chapter in this book).

other than the definitions and theorems stand out clearly, The author give examples on how that theorem can be used!! and The examples sometimes are really good!!

What's best in this book, are the problems after each chapter, they rank from direct applications to theorems, to CHallenging problems! (at least challenging for me). But note that some of the problems depend on each other! so if ur stuck on one problem, that means you might need to use a result from an earlier problem in the same chapter. its a drawback that the author does not say "use problem ... to solve this one", I think they assume that anyone solving the problems, is solving all of them in sequence, which what students SHOULD do. There is no way you can get a good grasp on the material in this book, unless you are a genius, or you solve ALL the problems after each chapter (at least a very good amount of them). I found best thing to do is try solving them in sequence, if you dont have time to solve all of them, then skip the ones that you REALLY think you can solve, and this way you can use the result later on.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in modern (abstract) algebra! But I think a pre-requisite to self-study in this book is exposition to how to write proofs rigorously. (well sure thats the pre-requisite for any math course, but usually this subject is one of the first subjects studied in upper level math courses, and you better take another course that exposes you to how to write proofs, if your buying this book for self-study).

About the Author

Thom Holmes is a composer and music historian. He studied composition with Paul Epstein in Philadelphia, was the long-time publisher of the magazine Recordings of Experimental Music (1979-1985), and worked with John Cage.

A high-quality textbook on electronic music

Thom Holmes's third edition of this book is divided into four parts: a history of electronic music up to 1960; an explanation of the techniques and tools used in analog synthesis; a discussion of the principles and techniques behind digital synthesis; and an exploration of various genres of electronic music. Because this book is a textbook, the coverage of what Holmes chooses to discuss is admirably thorough. However, because it is a textbook, meant for use in the college classroom, Holmes focuses almost entirely on non-popular music, i.e. "classical" and experimental music. There is only one chapter on electronic popular music, and it seems to me the one he spent the least amount of time updating. It's hard to write about electronic popular music without discussing electronic dance music, yet, apart from a sidebar featuring Gary Numan (!), Holmes manages to do it. Holmes focuses exclusively on "avant-garde" popular music in this chapter, and while that's understandable and perhaps acceptable for a college textbook, it's also a little misleading as far as gaining an understanding of electronic music in general is concerned. Despite these points, this is a very well-written book and a solid introduction to electronic music.

Outstanding!

This book is excellent! It covers a wide range of electronic music, from avant-garde to hip-hop. There's an interesting mix of technical details and general information, making the book a good choice for classroom use as well as casual reading.
