About the Author
When Louis Sachar was going to school, his teachers always pronounced his name wrong. Now that he has become a popular author of children’s books, teachers all over the country are pronouncing his name wrong. It should be pronounced “Sacker,” like someone who tackles quarterbacks or someone who stuffs potatoes into sacks.

Mr. Sachar received a B.A. in economics from the University of California at Berkeley. His first book, Sideways Stories from Wayside School, was accepted for publication during his first year of law school. After receiving his law degree, he spent six years asking himself whether he wanted to be an author or a lawyer before deciding to write for children full-time. His books include Wayside School Gets a Little Stranger, There’s a Boy in the Girls’ Bathroom, Wayside School is Falling Down, Dogs Don’t Tell Jokes, and the Marvin Redpost series.

Louis Sachar lives in Austin, Texas, with his wife and their daughter, Sherre.

This set encompasses three volumes of short stories, written over several decades. Sachar reads tales ranging from hilarious to ridiculous, zany, shaggy, and just plain odd. Most are set in Wayside School, a strange place in itself, being 30 floors tall with just one room per floor. While the cast of characters remains the same, each story focuses on a different child or teacher. The first title, SIDEWAYS STORIES FROM WAYSIDE SCHOOL, is by far the funniest as the quirks of specific children and teachers are dealt with in ingenious and clever ways. Sachar's deliberately paced reading is sometimes gravelly and awkward, a style that, perhaps, is meant to appeal to the middle school listeners who love these books. The books are still great but the illustrations are different!

This set, 'Wayside School Boxed Set' is also known as 'The Wayside School Collection' and contains all three of the "real" books in the 'Wayside School' series. 'Sideways Stories From Wayside School', 'Wayside School is Falling Down' and 'Wayside School Gets A Little Stranger' are as entertaining as they always were. The price is very good and you even get the three boxes together in a box. Please note that you do not get the Wayside Arithmetic books, which really were for more devoted fans and did nothing to enhance the actual storyline found in the three major/main books.

The only problem I had here was with the illustrations. I grew up reading the 'Wayside School' books, as they were illustrated by Julie Brinckloe. For years, I had a very clear picture of all the characters from Wayside School. Brinckloe's illustrations were very good at making the characters match Louis Sachar's descriptions. They've been stuck in my head for fifteen to twenty years. These three titles in the 'Wayside School' box set are illustrated by Adam McCauley and the difference is startling. I have a hard time warming up to the new (and inferior) artwork. Even though I like having the three books in a tidy little set, I definitely prefer Brinckloe's illustrations of the Wayside gang.

Everybody knows that Louis Sachar's humor was the real calling card for the 'Wayside School' series and not the pictures. However, you may want to stick with earlier copies of these books if you grew up looking at Julie Brinckloe's illustrations, as I did. Adam McCauley's illustrations are inferior in every way. The drawings are more juvenile and they don't look much like the original characters.

Don't get me wrong. The books are great, among the best children's literature you can buy for around $10 (the average price of the set). I'm still giving this four stars but you need to think about it a little before buying this box set. Unless you have no real attachment to the earlier artwork or are a first-time reader of the 'Wayside School' series, you'll want to track down the earlier copies. The "original" books are widely available for a great price in paperback, even if you have to buy them separately.

Wonderful set of books

Wonderful set of books! The box set is packaged very nicely and comes with three fantastic books that kids love. I always keep these in my classroom and love these for read alouds. Each book is filled with funny stories that the kids seem to enjoy. I would say that the stories mostly target kids 3rd grade and up. I love that each chapter is a story unto itself and can be enjoyed by everyone, even if they missed the first part of the book.

I remember my teacher reading this to me as a kid. So i bought them for my kids. This has become our story time books at bedtime. They seem to be loving these quirky stories. They are bringing me the book before bed to read.

An Orthodox theologian for the Western mind

Of all the material I have read dealing with the creation of Adam and Eve and their subsequent fall from innocence and holiness, Saint Symeon's homilies are among the best. Considering the limited material that Symeon has to deal with, I am amazed at the level of insight and knowledge that he gleens from the text. Symeon deals with such topics as Adam's and Eve's original created state and their purpose in the garden of Eden. Being of an Orthodox persuasion Symeon sees a strong message of Theosis in the beginning of Genesis. He argues that Adam and Eve were created holy and sinless, but that they were not created perfect since they still had the potential to sin and bring death and suffering into the world. Adam and Eve were created as innocent children who needed to grow in holiness as they obeyed the Lord and followed Him.
One portion of this book that I really liked was Saint Symeon's homily on the events immediately after the fall. Symeon understands God's calling to Adam in the garden as God's attempt to bring Adam and Eve to repentance and to ackowledge their wrong doing. God was giving them every opportunity to repent and he would have shown them mercy had they only admitted their trangression and sought God's forgiveness. This was an angle I had never even thought of before and really made me appreciate this section of the Genesis story. In addition, I love how Symeon understood Christ's work on the cross as the remedy to the disobedience in Eden. Just as Adam disobeyed at a tree and brought death and suffering into the world, Christ's obedience at the tree brought life and hapiness to those who believe in Him.
I really think individuals from a Western Christian perspective could really benefit from Saint Symeon's teachings. There are so many elements in his homilies that are similar to Protestant teaching, that I think people would find much to agree with. The Orthodox are often accused of having a less severe view of the fall and sin than the West, but Symeon's own words completely shatter this false assertion. Symeon refers to Adam's trangression as an act that brought a sinful nature upon all humanity. Symeon states that people sin because they are slaves to sin and not vice versa, and he even argues that everyone is unrighteous before God, even infants, because all are partakers in Adam's nature. I believe that Protestants will find much to agree with here, and they will also understand that the Orthodox do not take the sin issue lightly. Moreover, Symeon often refers to God's punishments as chastisements upon mankind for disobedience. Although chastisements are different than the Augustinian idea of judicial punishments, both the East and the West can agree that such maladies are God's response to man's sin. Although there are some differnces in thought I believe that everyone will benefit by reading this great theologian of the Eastern Church.

A wonderful group of Homilies

St. Symeon the New Theologian is often overlooked in the Western Church, but thankfully this is changing. This selection of his homilies concerning the fall of Adam and the nature of the Fall-Redemption relationship is very good; I recommend it highly. Father Seraphim's translation reads very well and allows one to focus upon the message of the text rather than on deciphering the writing. All in all, this is a wonderful book for anyone interested in Christian thought, be they Orthodox or no.

The Sin of Adam and the Redemption of Man

_The First Created Man_, compiled, edited and translated by Seraphim Rose, is a selection of seven Homilies by the St. Symeon the New Theologian concerning the sin of Adam, the fall from Paradise and the redemption brought about by Christ. St. Symeon is one of only three in the Church who have attainted the title "Theologian": the other two being St. John the Evangelist (of the Apostles) and St. Gregory of Nazianzus (of the Fathers of the Church). St. Symeon was a highly influential monk and abbot in the 10th and 11th century Byzantine Empire. He wrote extensively on theological topics and remains one of the most respected teachers in the Eastern Orthodox Church. Fr. Seraphim's translation comes from the Russian translation of the original Greek by St. Theophan the Recluse, a 19th century Russian bishop. The first part of the book is an introduction to the life and teachings of St Symeon. The second part is the seven Homilies. Man, when he first lived in Paradise/Eden, was not distracted and out of direct contact with the Divine as he is today. He did not have to strive against creation to survive, and was not burdened by the pain, hunger, thirst, lusts of the flesh and endless toil unto death that sums up human existence since the Fall. When Adam and Eve ate of the forbidden fruit against God's commandment, they did not receive Divine Mercy at that point because they did not repent of their sin and had listened to the councils of the serpent. God, in time, did redeem man from his cursed state, in the person of Jesus Christ, who died so that man may be free from death and have life with God in Heaven, a return to Paradise, a return to the original Golden Age. The Cross/tree that Jesus was pinned on to save man is the counterpart of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil in the Garden of Eden that destroyed man. At the end of time, teaches St. Symeon, God will create the new Heaven and Earth. The material world will be dissolved by the Divine fire and the new Earth will be one in which there is direct communion with God, the pure essence of Being that transcends all that can be perceived by the senses or human thought.

This book is extremely helpful!

I chose this book because I have a very dear friend struggling with a chemical imbalance that requires medication. His diagnosis and need to stay on medicine has been difficult to accept - especially as a Christian who believes that God can heal. "Emotionally Free" is a wonderful book for Christians struggling with the knowledge that they (or someone they love) need medical help for a problem that seems to be so spiritual. "Emotionally Free" offered great insights on so many levels that I am now rereading it and will definitely be giving it to my friend. What I appreciate about Dr. Grant Mullen is that he is a Christian, counselor and a physician with the ability to clearly and simply articulate the complex causes, symptoms and impacts of mood disorders and walk you through steps toward healing (physical, emotional, relational and spiritual). This book comes packed with practical information, grace, revelation, humor, healing and hope. Get it and be sure to read it. You will be so glad you did! The title says it all - read it, work through it, and step-by-step become "emotional free."

MUST BUY TWO THUMBS UP

If you want to expand your knowledge using the Excel application, this is the tool for you. The examples / videos will arm you with the tool required to solve basic to master level scenarios. I keep this tool very very close. Its sad to say but I wont share this tool with just anyone as I consider it a treasure trove of information and a high impact tool in my arsenal.

Just received the DVD yesterday and viewed the 1st few lessons and I am already learning things that will benefit me in my job as an analyst. Mike Girvin breaks down complex formulas in steps that makes it very easy to follow along an learn. A great resource for any analyst or advance Excel user.

A boxed series you don't want to miss

Though I love to look at half naked cowboy pictures. And who doesn't. I normally don't care to read about Westerns. Upon speaking with Ms. Elliott after attending an event that she was a featured author of we had gotten in discussion of what kind of books we enjoyed and did not enjoy to read. And somewhere in that conversation she mentioned that she bet that she could change my mind and that i would enjoy reading one of her books that was in her Plush Velvet Series. Being game about it I told her to go ahead and send me a book. Knowing Ms. Elliott and her wicked sense of humor was probably laughing her butt off at me she did. Imagine to my surprise she sent me the box set that also included books 4 & 5. Did she change my mind about Westerns? Maybe, but she did change my mind about reading cowboy series. All I can say is Ride Me Cowboy. If like me you don't care about westerns, just try out the first book in the series. I can almost bet you will own the whole series before you know it. Well done Leanore. Now you can laugh and say I told you so..

To create a good picture book or story book, you must understand how the two differ in concept. A story book tells a story with words. Although the pictures amplify it, the story can be understood without them. The pictures have an auxiliary role, because the words themselves contain images. In contrast, a true picture book tells a story mainly or entirely with pictures.

About the Author
Uri Shulevitz has written and illustrated more than 30 children's books. In 1969 he received the Caldecott Medal for his illustrations in Arthur Ransome's retelling of The Fool of the World and the Flying Ship. In 1980 The Treasure, which he wrote and illustrated, was selected as a Caldecott Honor Book. Other children's books by Uri Shulevitz include One Monday Morning, The Magician, Rain Rain Rivers (winner of a bronze medal at the 1970 Leipzig International Book Exhibition), and Dawn (given the 1975 Christopher Awards and chosen as a 1976 Honor Book by the International Board on books for Young People). Uri Shulevitz has taught the writing and illustrating of children's books at the New School for Social Research in New York City. He has also directed a summer workshop at Hartwick College in Oneonta, New York.

STOP! GO NO FURTHER! YOU FOUND IT!

This is the book you have been looking for. I've purchased a number of other books about children's publishing, but this one has more wisdom and more real technique than any of them.

The title might make you think this book is about illustrating children's books. Yes, an illustrator can get a graduate degree from the material here. But the title doesn't really do the book justice, because Shulevitz covers both writing and illustration. He covers both topics together, showing how the text and the pictures move a story forward to a satisfactory conclusion. Quoting from the book (p.29):

"When the actor-stage relationship is clear, when the picture code is consistent, when the progression is appropriate to the action, the picture sequence will 'speak' to the reader. The more clearly the picture sequence speaks, the more enjoyment the reader will be able to get from it. And giving a feeling of satisfaction is essential in children's books."

This book has literally hundreds of example illustrations and text excerpts. Most are pencil and ink sketches, but don't be fooled: the author created most of them specifically to illustrate this book. They do a great job.

I'm done gushing. If you are interested in this topic, buy the book. You won't be disappointed.

Too dated

After reading the reviews for this book I purchased a copy thinking that it looked promising. But I was disappointed with some of the content. Although there is some good information some of the material is very dated. The book was written before the digital era. Some of it is still relevant like chapter 6 storyboard and book dummy and chapter 12 picture space and composition. But other chapters are outdated like chapter 16 color preseparation and the chapter on visual references. Overall I felt it was too dated to be of much use and wished I had purchased something more relevant to the type of children's books being written today.

A book every children's book illustrator should have--and useful for writers and others too

The author of Writing with Pictures is a Caldecott medalist, and he gives the reader a master's class in the theory and the practicalities of picture book illustration in particular and of illustration more generally.

CONTENTS: This is a substantial book, large format, 272 pages, with over 600 illustrations (mostly black and white, many of them small). Shulevitz breaks it down into four sections: Telling the Story, Planning the Book, Creating the Pictures, and Preparing for Reproduction. There is also an appendix with advice on finding a publisher, a short bibliography, and a useful index.

Telling the Story: In this section, Shulevitz opens with the difference between a picture book and a story book. He then goes on to explain his theory of "visual storytelling," using many visual examples. He also demonstrates how text and illustration work together in a picture book, and closes with a discussion of the characteristics of a picture book, such as "linear continuity" and rhythm and repetition.

Planning the Book: In this section, Shulevitz shows the steps an illustrator goes through to create a book: starting with a story board; moving on to a dummy; working with text in a layout; playing with many possibilities of size, scale, shape; and dealing with the structure of a printed book. Step-by-step visual illustrations make this easy to follow.

Creating the Pictures: This section starts with theory: the purpose of illustration is to clarify or even illuminate the text, and thus the illustrator must at least make the pictures "readable." He then focuses on creating illustrations themselves. It covers such topics as drawing figures and objects, using visual references, composition, technique, and style, with copious examples.

Preparing for Reproduction: The book was originally published in 1985, and this is the only section that has become badly dated, as it focuses on the way to create pre-separated art, which used to be the predominant method used in children's books. Today, of course, almost all picture books are made by scanning original full-color art.

COMMENTS: It's not over-praising this book to say that there's no other book like it, and that it's an unmatched resource for anyone involved with children's book illustration. I've had a copy for several years, and I learn something every time I open it. Of course, I'm an editor, but the illustrators I know tell me the same.

If you want to understand the nitty-gritty of creating a picture book, from text to final illustrations and layout, there is no other book out there.
