I plan to use it as a core introductory text to our "Journey to Operational Excellence" program.

Make The Customer More Successful

Happy customers will help your company be successful. But if you can make YOUR CUSTOMER more successful, the payback to you can be manyfold. Would you like to figure out how to do this?

Chris Ahoy has figured it out. His book is based on his own experience in managing the physical facilities department at Iowa State University over the past 12 years. Chris and his organization have won numerous awards and have built a solid reputation for customer service at its best. He has documented his own success and shown others how to do it.

The book is really about how to be an outstanding LEADER, describing in a logical fashion all the elements that go into that task. All the normal management buzzwords are present - organizational design, transforming the workspace, metrics, systems approach, and all the rest. What sets this book apart from the competition is the way that Ahoy has organized every chapter and every section around three broad themes: (1) satisfy the customer, (2) delight the customer, and (3) make the customer successful.

You will have to read the book yourself to see how theme #3 is handled. This is what makes the book unique.

If I were to criticize the book in any way, it would be that maybe the author has tried to be a bit too all-inclusive. He has provided "the shell" of a complete management handbook but hasn't filled in all the details of every aspect of that shell to make a true handbook. Considering the cost and size of the book, he couldn't! The book is only 272 pages long. But to compensate for this brevity in some of the areas (notably in Chapter 11 on quality tools) , the author has provided many useful references to point the reader in the right direction to fill out the shell for himself/herself. The book is solid, and the ideas that Ahoy presents really do work. He proved it in his own job!

As Practical As It Gets For Any Organization's Attempt At Achieving Excellence

As a Quality professional overseeing the day-to-day operation and long-term strategic focus of an ISO9001:2008-based Business Management System, I'm always looking for practical, real-world ideas I can use to enhance my organization's performance. As I have found over the years, there's no absence of material in the published realm addressing organizational performance improvement, some of it eminently practical and truly implement-ready, and some... well... decidedly less so. And because we're a service organization with no involvement with manufacturing in any way, I've found some material unsuitable for our somewhat unique environment. Then, almost out of the blue, comes a work like this, written by someone with real `street cred' and the actual award-winning results to back it up.

Someone once stated `... Knowledge without practical application is useless...', and I think it fair to say that's an unstated subtext of this work.

Some years ago, I had an opportunity to meet Chris Ahoy, tour his operation at Iowa State University, and experience, first-hand, what I think are the truly spectacular results of his efforts and those of his team. We spent several hours together afterwards discussing the theories and concepts that eventually came together in this book. I was significantly impressed then -- I remain significantly impressed now. In my view, what Chris has brought to the forefront has been driven by his real-world, hands-on experience, his inquisitive `how-does-this-work-and-how-can-it-work-better?'|continual improvement nature, and perhaps most important of all, his seemingly endless passion and enthusiasm for seeking excellence and modeling it in his organization and to all those with whom he interacts.

Bottom line? He's the `real deal' -- a genuine `student of the game' -- and his insights documented here and elsewhere are ones I value highly. Without reservation, therefore, I recommend this book to anyone interested in developing a practical plan to help their organization achieve sustainable success.

Good overview but...

This is a good and up-to-date summary of various international organizations, including their respective histories, structures, mechanisms and shortcomings. However, the word "theories" is somewhat misguiding in the title as the analysis of the subject through IR theories remains rather superficial while conceptual dichotomies (i.e. sovereignty and globalization, power and interdependence etc.) predominate. This is not a bad approach at all but the title should have reflected it.

Good, but...

This is a well written book, but not quite what I expected. Although the information contained is certainly informative and helpful, there really isn't enough of it. Many subjects get little more than a page in the book. For someone not trained in accounting, this would be a great book, but for someone with the education and some experience, it really didn't give me enough to justify the fairly steep price tag. If it had fleshed out more of the concepts and was another 100-200 pages longer, it would be a fantatic book, but it just not quite enough of what I neeeded. Her writing is excellent considering the technical nature of the subject matter, so I will certainly look into other titles by the author.

A good read for both beginners and experienced fraud investigators

I really like this book. I am a certified fraud examiner, and have been a sole practitioner practicing in this area since 1996. I read a few books and many articles on fraud every year. This is one of the best.

In a logically structured presentation, Coenen walks through all of the major types of fraud and discusses the thought process that an investigator should use when trying to detect each of them. The discussions of each thought process is typically aided by five to fifteen bullet points--not excessive lists by any means--that the investigator should make sure to consider.

She maintains an engaging, conversational tone throughout the book, with just enough detail and war stories to illustrate the procedures and techniques that she presents. Coenen's book reeks of actual, real-life experience. You can feel the depth and breadth of her fraud investigation experience as you read this book.

Expert Fraud Investigation starts out with three chapters describing the beginning of the cycle: finding fraud, beginning the investigation, and managing the case. These are useful not only for the investigator; attorneys or corporate managers hiring a fraud investigator will also benefit from the delineation of the thought processes and approaches that the investigator should be taking.

Chapters four through six provide a general overview of how to conduct a fraud investigation: searching for fraud, sources of information, and investigative techniques. These chapters give a good overview and some discussion of the thought processes to use.

Chapters seven through ten discuss specific types of fraud and specific investigative steps usually taken to detect them. They cover asset misappropriation schemes, financial statement frauds, corruption schemes, and external frauds such as Ponzi schemes and insurance fraud. The book then concludes with chapters on reporting and litigation, and other issues such as how to market a fraud investigation practice.

Expert Fraud Investigation presents its topic comprehensively, but without redundancy or overkill: Coenen hits each idea once and moves on. There is no new information that I didn't already know, but this book is a great summary of most of the things I need to know to do my work. It is probably a book I will pick up and read a few more times when I need a refresher or am stumped on a fraud investigation.

This book is a good read for fraud investigators with all levels of experience, for judges and lawyers who deal with expert witnesses or consultants in fraud cases, and for corporate managers fearful that they may need a fraud investigation at their own company.

About the Author
The late Harry Hearder, who died in 1996, was a Professor at the University of Wales. His many publications on European and Italian history include Europe in the Nineteenth Century, 2nd edition (1988) and Italy in the Age of the Risorgimento (1983).

Jonathan Morris is Lecturer in Modern European History at University College, London. His publications include The Political Economy of Shopkeeping in Milan 1886-1922 (Cambridge, 1983). He is editor of the Journal of Contemporary European History.

essence of many event's in Italy's long history

Unlike the other reviewers, I found the book refreshing and well articulated. Of course at 300 pages it is indeed a brief precise of such a glorious and long history. In response to concerns that you might have about it being too short, you should realise that there is no lack of long voluminous treatises on many portions of Italy's history.

The book is characterised by the author's ability to sum up entire episodes and events very succinctly. So that you can grasp and hopefully remember the essence of a time, rather than just commit dates and facts to memory.

There was one remark in the text that intrigued me. It said that at the conclusion of the 3rd Punic War, the vengeful Roman senators, especially Cato, had all the surviving Cathaginians enslaved. Some 50 000 of them. Wow. The puzzling point was the suggestion that this led to the fall of the Roman Republic. In other more extensive accounts of the Punic War, I do not remember this causality being bruited about. Is there anything to it?e

Disappointed

I was initially excited by this book when I first bought it, but it became more & more difficult to follow as I went thru it.
The reason is the book's poor usage of events, places and maps. For example: the book talks about what the Etruscans did, but doesn't tell you where they are from or even who they are. The movement of people from the Po Valley is discussed, but you're not told where the Po Valley is. Don't check the index, Po Valley isn't there. There's a map on page 14 on the expansion of Italy, but the territories referenced aren't in the text or the index. I finally gave up trying to place events with places and abandoned the book at page 23.
This is a history of Italy for people who already know the history of italy.

This is a great book if your into monsters and myths and stuff. The book is setup nicely and the artwork that they gather together for the book is amazing. Well worth the money if your into monsters. Not a whole heck of a lot to read but plenty to look at.

I enjoyed reading this bestiary about monsters and the pictures in this book are a great collection of art on these different monsters of legend, folklore and mythology. The author has organized his material in such a way that it helped me to understand about these beasts and creatures.

Monsters are the creatures that go against the call of nature. With no evidence for their existence in science, monsters are the description of something that is evil and objectionable. Derived from the Latin monstrum, monster is now applied not only to animals, but humans with objectionable characteristics.

This is Christopher Dell’s third book. The first being an art history related book and the second a book on Monsters: Devils Demons Vampires Werewolves & other Magical Creatures. Hence this book being reviewed is no doubt a development from the research and material that was gained from the previous book on monsters.

Not dealing with people such as “The Elephant Man” or modern day real “monsters” such as serial killers, Dells’ book deals with the types of monsters, those from fiction and that of mythology. Legend says that monsters produce physical harm and mental fear by its actions or it’d appearance. Dell has created a book that has described many of the monsters that have been written into history from all over the world. Appearing in the form of “Echidna” from Greek mythology about 700 BCE, monsters have been part of our fiction and culture since that time. But, as previously stated, many of the monsters that have been created were done so without due regard for any evidence for their existence.

From this beginning, the pseudo-science of Cryptozoology developed, which looks at creatures that may or may not exist. Examples include the Loch Ness Monster, Bigfoot or the Penrith “Panda”*. But this is out of the scope of this well-illustrated book, specifically dealing with monsters and mythical creatures. Starting with Gods, Dell takes the reader on a journey covering all types of creatures from demons, dragons, water monsters, hybrids and ghosts. One interesting chapter is that of the monster from the uncharted areas of the world, where cartographers drew side images of “monsters” and people from far away lands. This aspect of “monsterology” is forgotten as the cartographer of the Middle Ages was allowed creativity to decorate their maps. Perhaps as a result of these creative drawings that many a sailor or explorer claimed the existence of these creatures.

The illustrations are excellent and of high quality. Dell discusses aspects of the monsters but then displays images from art history. Many of the images are from private collections and some have never been published before. But the spread of monsters Dell discusses not only come from Europe but also from Asia, Africa and other mythical countries.

Dell has been interviewed and a number of Podcasts with his insight into monsters have been broadcast, especially on the “Monster Talk” podcast in December 2010. Those readers that are not aware, the Monster Talk Podcast deals with specific matters of Cryptozoology and can be located on the Skeptic Society website. ([...]). that podcast places a bright light on monsters from a sceptic perspective and is highly recommended listening.

This is a book that would be of interest to the researcher or that reader that enjoys history of the para-normal or crypto-zoological type issues. Dell has achieved a success with this book and would make a nice addition to a young sceptic’s library.
