Being Tuareg is an Art

This book gives an excellent overview of the Tuareg Culture. It addresses the customs, history, Berber language and it's poetry, as well as the material culture of the Tuareg. The examples of the leather work and jewelry are superb. It was my pleasure to attend the sale of Tuareg jewelry at Fort Mason, CA, which is mentioned on page 67 of the book. This book is the catalogue for an exhibit which will visit the Cantor Center for the Visual Arts, at Stanford University, in 2007. If you like things Tuareg, you will love this book.

Excellent Review Of Turareg Culture & Art

Most of the African tribal art published is from sub-Saharan regions, particularly from West Africa, but his wonderful book features art from the Tuareg people of the southern Saharan area. The items include many of the famous leather Turaeg bags, plus shields, weapons, bowls, and a large selection of silver jewelry. In this fine book on Tuareg art, you will appreciate what a splendid variety of art and decoration these traditionally nomadic peoples produce, and recognize how welcome it is to see these rarely published African cultural artifacts.

Wonderful book.

This is a wonderfully written and illustrated book. A must for anyone interested in the amazing and little known nomad culture of the Sahara.
So much of what this book documents so well has been lost forever as an unintended consequence of the overthrow of Quaddafi.

About the Author
Roger H. Davidson is professor emeritus of government and politics at the University of Maryland, and has served as visiting professor of political science at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He is a Fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration. During the 2001-2002 academic year, he served as the John Marshall Chair in political science at the University of Debrecen, Hungary. His books include Remaking Congress: Change and Stability in the 1990's, co-edited with James A. Thurber (1995), and Understanding the Presidency, Seventh Edition, co-edited with James P. Pfiffner (2012). Davidson is co-editor with Donald C. Bacon and Morton Keller of The Encyclopedia of the United States Congress (1995). Walter J. Oleszek is a senior specialist in the legislative process at the Congressional Research Service. He has served as either a full-time professional staff aide or consultant to every major House and Senate congressional reorganization effort beginning with passage of the Legislative Reorganization Act of 1970. In 1993 he served as Policy Director of the Joint Committee on the Organization of Congress. A longtime adjunct faculty member at American University, Oleszek is a frequent lecturer to various academic, governmental, and business groups. He is the author or co-author of several books, including Congressional Procedures and the Policy Process, 9th ed. (2014), and Congress under Fire: Reform Politics and the Republican Majority, with C. Lawrence Evans (1997). Frances E. Lee is professor of government and politics at the University of Maryland. and for good reason, though you would never guess that from ...

I used this textbook in my law class and found it engaging in some areas, but rather anecdotal and somewhat random in what it covers. Would have preferred a more rigorous and disciplined approach to covering the essentials of budgeting, appropriations, authorizing legislation, lobbying, etc. And the authors are way too naive and respectful of the institution, glossing over how dysfunctional, and fundamentally corrupt Congress now is, since the Supreme Court took a wrecking ball to the whole edifice of limits on campaign finance. The public gives Congress less than a 10% approval rating, and for good reason, though you would never guess that from reading this obsequious book.

Don't Speak Their Names Aloud!

As a young girl Abby is tormented by bullies at school. One day, while running away from those bullies she meets and saves a young boy who is inexplicably trapped on a small island. In return for her saving him the strange boy gives her a beautiful gem, a gem that should have changed her future. Instead, though, her cousin steals the gem while Abby is sleeping and disappears, changing her future in a different way.
Years later Abby meets a strange boy named Whilhelm and things that she had forgotten or that she had never been allowed to learn begin to surface in her life again. Things like Knights and Trolls and the darkness that either side holds.

This book was very good. When it began I was a little leery because I had a hard time following the transition lf time, but that was a short lived feeling. The idea of 'romance' between Abby and Whilhelm is still out for me, she seemed to only be drawn to him because of the power he held over her while he did seem to love her. But that was only because of who he 'killed' and the promise he seemed to have made (or something else that I cant post for fear of giving away a surprise!)

It is fast paced and a fairly fluid read, I will be watching out for the second book.

I am blown away such a unique and amazing story. This story brings me back to my childhood!! Trolls and gemstones. Being a major troll collector growing up this hits a soft spot with me. I love the take on troll and how trolls come to be. Such a different take on the troll in parnormal genre. Most I read are ugly but these trolls are beautiful with living gemstones as eyes how cool. I love The characters expecially Will defiantly have a soft spot for him and was so happy with the major twist we find out about him!!i also love how Abby is just a plain Jane character but in the best way possible. No overly beauty someone any teenage girl can relate to. Will be waiting impatiently for the best thinks for an amazing read!!!

The first chapter of this book is written in a prologue style. We get to meet Abby when she's just eleven years old, and her life is forever changed by an horrific event. The rest of the book is written in present tense when she's sixteen. I just loved the backstory and it very much helped me connect with the characters (especially Abby) that much more!

I really enjoyed the way in which the author wrote her characters. They are very realistic, especially Abby. In the beginning of this story we get to witness Abby on a date. I could see myself reacting pretty much the exact same way that she did at her age, I loved it!

If you would have told me I'd love a book written about Trolls I would have laughed at you, but alas I gave this one a chance and loved it! One thing I must hit on is the originality of this story. Have you ever read a YA romance based on Trolls? (There's more original twists but I can't tell you about them, you'll have to find out for yourself!)

There is romance in this book and no love triangle! I will say that I believe the romance was more of a build up for the second book and am so pumped to see what happens!

One thing I was a bit undecided about was the pacing of the plot. Now don't get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed it. But the pieces didn't really click until the last couple of chapters. (Actually around 98% through.) I think the climax of the book began a bit too late and made the middle of the book a bit slow.

I couldn't have asked for a better ending to this story. There is a HUGE plot twist that completely shocked me! It was absolutely spectacular!

The best business consultants help their clients "keep their eye on the ball," despite many distractions and complications. This book is designed to do just that -- it distills the M&A process to its essence, reminding (perhaps, gently forcing) the reader who seeks to grow their business via a strategic acquisition to always remember the point of it all. The book is full of wisdom, simply articulated. It was clearly authored by a knowledgable advisor, who freely shares his vast experience and who helpfully uses anecdotes to make his points. The author's "Top 10 Lessons" to ensure a successful acquisition are helpfully summarized at the end of the book -- but it's hard to miss them as you read. I was thoroughly impressed by this book. I expect this will be an invaluable handbook to M&A advisors (and their clients seeking to grow via acquisition) for many years.

Very practical guide to M&A

Although I don't have any experience with mergers & acquisitions, I found the book easy to follow. The chapters outline David Braun's "Roadmap to Acquisition" starting from the beginning of the process through integration. David Braun uses anecdotes and tools to illustrate many of his ideas. I found these stories particularly helpful for understanding the concepts presented in the book. For anyone looking to plan an acquisition or gain a practical understanding of M&A, Successful Acquisitions: A Proven Plan for Strategic Growth is the book for you.

While a number of books and scholarly articles have proposed protocols for the careful evaluation of these complex cases, a review of the collected case materials show that serious methodological errors as well as problems in the conceptualization of the disorder and the steps needed to diagnose it are more the rule than the exception in this area. Further, the doctors and mental health experts who pursue these cases are often haphazard and sloppy in their methods, despite the appalling harm inflicted on families when these professionals are mistaken in their conclusions.

Eric G. Mart, a forensic psychologist and internationally-known expert on Munchausen's Syndrome by Proxy, examines prevalent investigative and diagnostic techniques, as well as the literature and research on the disorder, according to the standards of empirical science. Eric G. Mart, Ph.D., ABPP, is a licensed psychologist in private practice in Manchester, New Hampshire. He is board certified in forensic psychology, and his work in this area includes assessments of civil and criminal competencies, risk assessments, custody evaluations, special education cases and offender treatment. He also sees children, adolescents, adults and couples for psychotherapy and testing. Dr. Mart is an internationally known expert on Munchausen's Syndrome by Proxy, and has testified on the subject in court cases throughout the United States and Canada.

I first heard the term Munchausen’s syndrome by proxy (MSBP) about ten years ago, when I sat in on a panel discussion of the syndrome at an American Psychological Association convention. I gave the matter no more thought until a few years ago, when a defense attorney approached me to review a local child abuse case in which MSBP was suspected.

I had no particular expertise in this form of child abuse, but neither did anyone else involved with the case. In preparing to review the documentation and reports in the case, I spent time at the local university libraries and read as much material as I could find (which was a surprisingly large amount) on the subject of MSBP. I was appalled by what I read. There appeared to be only one or two articles in the professional literature which might have been considered “hard research,” and in these the research had been done only in the most rudimentary way. The rest of the literature consisted of case studies in which medical and psychological professionals identified what they believed to be MSBP cases and then discussed how closely they corresponded to or deviated from the behavioral profile and clinical features of the hypothetical archetypal case. Much of the “science” in this literature, which had been published in prestigious journals, would not have passed serious scrutiny in an undergraduate research methods class. Nevertheless, despite the fact that the scientific “heavy lifting” of empirical research had not been done with this syndrome and its inferred dynamics, it was clear that professionals all over the United States and United Kingdom were willing to diagnose the disorder. Moreover, some of the excesses of the early child sexual abuse prosecutions were being repeated in cases of alleged MSBP.

Because of my familiarity with the issues and research in the area of child sexual abuse, in early 1998 I presented a paper on the subject of MSBP to the Eastern Psychological Association annual meeting. This paper, which discussed how problems with the conceptualization and assessment of MSBP were likely to result in many false positive diagnoses, was published the following year in expanded form in the American Journal of Forensic Psychology (Mart, 1999). As is often the case these days, the article made its way onto the internet, and before long I was deluged with requests for evaluations and testimony in MSBP cases, not just in my home state of New Hampshire but all over the United States.

Unfortunately, MSBP now appears to have become what Thomas Ryan, a well-known Arizona attorney who specializes in medical malpractice, has termed “the disease du jour.”† It is disheartening to see families torn apart by allegations of MSBP, which are almost impossible to fight due to the looseness of the legal process in such cases, the cost of mounting an effective defense, and the fact that almost any behavior on the part of the parent suspected of MSBP is seen as a confirmation of the diagnosis. Although clearly there are cases in which parents have used medicine or the medical system to abuse children (I have seen such cases), it is also clear that many individuals, possibly most, who are given this diagnosis do not meet the diagnostic criteria for MSBP, if indeed the diagnosis itself has any validity.

This book covers a variety of topics related to my concerns about the diagnosis of MSBP and its application. The information and opinions it contains are drawn from my research and my experience in the area of child abuse generally and MSBP specifically. Those cases that I cite have been altered in certain details as necessary to protect the parents, children and professionals involved. It is my sincere hope that this book will serve to help begin a serious examination of the way in which this diagnosis is applied and frequently misapplied.

This is really an exceptional book. I wish it existed 20 years ago. Many parents and children harmed in Europe and North America would have been saved from government excess actions against caring and loving parents.

If You read nothing else on MSBP read this book

Mart has written an important book that all of us in mental the mental health professions should read carefully. Munchausen's by proxy is the latest in a series of syndromes accepted uncritically and based largely on a very small number of tentative observations and a feedback loop which validates the concept by citation. It goes a little like this. Smith writes a paper in which he claims he has observed a case of MSBP and it had the following characteristics. Jones writes a paper and cites Smith. Smith cites Jones and so on. It is like a therapist who once told me that he knew satanic ritual abuse including human sacrifice must be occurring since he had heard it from so many patients in groups. This same sort of logic has been applied to a number of "syndromes" and MSBP is a hot topic. Mart carefully explains how the logic is flawed. He describes the errors in interpretation of the data by others who have published on MSBP and makes it clear how problems like misunderstanding of base rates and types of errors have led to reification of a questionable concept. This is an important problem not only because of the potential damage associated with false positive diagnoses of mothers as having MBPS but because we are so prone to make the same sort of thinking errors in so many areas. Most of us will never see a case of alleged MSBP. All of us can benefit from learning to develop critical thinking.

As a Director of a residential home for children and a clinician with over 25 years of experience in the field,I found Dr. Mart's book to be an astounding, educational treat. His work is a highly informative read - one that asks and answers the tough questions about MBPS. This text will be required reading for all treatment staff, as it forces one to view the field from a critical, scientific perspective.
I feel confident that this book will become the new "high water mark" in the field. A must read.
